Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine the influence of externally sourced information and advice on the strategy formation processes of Small-Medium enterprises (SMEs) in Australia. The Small-Medium Enterprise sector comprises the vast majority of Australian owned businesses and employs almost half the working population. In recent decades, this sector of the Australian economy has acted as a stabilising force, effectively moderating both cyclical and unexpected swings in production, income and employment, and yet continues to be under represented in business research. Much has been published internationally on the more informal nature of planning processes evident in SMEs, and concurrently on the strategy formation processes of these smaller firms. Advances in the theory of competition highlight the importance of knowledge assests in providing firms with a source of competitive advantage. However, little research has been conducted into the influence of knowledge sourced from outside the firm in the form of information andf strategic advice, and no previous study has to date linked such outsourced information and advice to the definition of strategy through the planning processes of these smaller firms. ... The research brings to the extant literature a new holistic approach to the integration of externally sourced information and advice through the planning processes of the firm to define strategy, particularly in relation to marketing. The conclusions indicate that the source of information and advice critical to formulating marketing strategy in particular, is not usually identified in a marketing plan. To this end, an 'information analysis' could be incorporated into the framework of a marketing plan to clearly identify the source and comparative impotance of externally sourced information and advice informing the strategy formation process of SMEs.--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The managed flow of goods and information from raw material to final sale also known as a "supply chain" affects everythingâ€"from the U.S. gross domestic product to where you can buy your jeans. The nature of a company's supply chain has a significant effect on its success or failureâ€"as in the success of Dell Computer's make-to-order system and the failure of General Motor's vertical integration during the 1998 United Auto Workers strike. Supply Chain Integration looks at this crucial component of business at a time when product design, manufacture, and delivery are changing radically and globally. This book explores the benefits of continuously improving the relationship between the firm, its suppliers, and its customers to ensure the highest added value. This book identifies the state-of-the-art developments that contribute to the success of vertical tiers of suppliers and relates these developments to the capabilities that small and medium-sized manufacturers must have to be viable participants in this system. Strategies for attaining these capabilities through manufacturing extension centers and other technical assistance providers at the national, state, and local level are suggested. This book identifies action steps for small and medium-sized manufacturersâ€"the "seed corn" of business start-up and developmentâ€"to improve supply chain management. The book examines supply chain models from consultant firms, universities, manufacturers, and associations. Topics include the roles of suppliers and other supply chain participants, the rise of outsourcing, the importance of information management, the natural tension between buyer and seller, sources of assistance to small and medium-sized firms, and a host of other issues. Supply Chain Integration will be of interest to industry policymakers, economists, researchers, business leaders, and forward-thinking executives.

Book excerpt: OUTSOURCING IS THE BAD BOY OF BUSINESS, blamed for poor quality, unethical salaries, inhumane conditions, and even the ruination of industrialized economies. Yet, Apple, Google, JP Morgan, and almost every Fortune 500 company outsources, and the industry is growing at breakneck speed. Hiring an offshore team can save a company 70% on its staffing costs and offer previously unimaginable access to a near-infinite pool of 2 billion highly qualified professionals. It's a game changing proposition for businesses. Globalization and technology are connecting the world's 8 billion people into one single online economy. For three decades, the outsourcing industry was a sleeping giant, generating $200 billion annually, and employing tens of millions of people, but mostly invisible to the traditional economy. Now, the giant is waking. Only recently has outsourcing become an option for small and medium-sized businesses. Previously, due to technological limitations, it was the exclusive domain of the big multinational conglomerates. Many smaller businesses have now heard of offshoring, but few really understand its full potential or how it can be applied to their company. What does outsourcing really mean for the typical business, entrepreneur, or manager? Should they embrace this movement or run from it? Is outsourcing really the devil incarnate or a misunderstood force for good? Will it cause the downfall of economic stability in the West or catalyze humanity's next step-change in prosperity and innovation? Inside Outsourcing takes a deep dive into the origin of outsourcing, its current state, and likely future. It explores the high-level concept, drills down into the mechanics, offers clear insights for its practical application, and provides actionable advice for businesses of all sizes exploring its potential. This book is a must-read if you don't want to miss this game-changing opportunity.

Book excerpt: The global spread of the novel coronavirus has had a devastating impact on supply chains around the world. Thus, the core notion of supply chain resilience is of increasing interest to organizations. This is especially true for Small and Medium Enterprises as the amount of uncertainty that is prevalent in modern-day business has brought new challenges in their quest to be successful. Nevertheless, a preliminary prerequisite for improved supply chain resilience is an understanding of the network that connects the business. Realizing this scenario, the present study endeavors to explore the influence of outsourcing and collaboration on supply chain resilience of SMEs during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Sri Lankan context. Hence, a survey research design was undertaken by sourcing primary data through a self- administered questionnaire using a sample of 75 SMEs. The variables were statistically analyzed using regression techniques and correlation analysis. The study revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship as well as a positive impact between outsourcing and collaboration on supply chain resilience. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the present study is one of the first papers to explore the existing interrelationship between outsourcing and collaboration on SME supply chain resilience. The findings are sure to provide novel insights into the phenomenon of supply chain resilience as the study provides insight in terms of the impact of both outsourcing and collaboration functions on SME supply chain resilience during adverse times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this penetrating study of how knowledge-based services and technology are revolutionizing the economy and every corporate strategy, James Brian Quinn argues that the successful companies of the 90's -- whether in manufacturing or services -- will derive their competitive edge not from ephemerally superior products but from a deep understanding of a few highly developed knowledge and service based "core competencies." Rarely will owning the largest raw materials resource, manufacturing plants, equipment bases, or integrated facilities provide a maintainable competitive edge for major companies. Such physical properties are too easily cloned or bypassed. From now on, Quinn documents, intelligent enterprises will derive sustainable advantage from knowledge and service based activities that leverage intellectual assets. They will increase value through technological sophistication, better knowledge bases, more creative customer responsiveness, and the unsurpassed management of human and intellectual capital that competitors cannot reproduce. Quinn analyzes the technological and economic forces that make such strategies essential. He shows in detail how to create and leverage knowledge and service based core competencies for maximum focus and effectiveness. Managers, Quinn asserts, must define each value-creating activity as a knowledge based service and determine whether or not they can perform that service -- be it research, design, inventory control, accounting, distribution, or advertising -- better than anyone else in the world. Using examples from companies such as Merck, Honda, Apple, Boeing, and Wal-Mart, Quinn describes how forward-looking companies can best perform needed analyses and implement strategies around selected core competencies. By eliminating or "outsourcing" less important functions to superior outside vendors, firms become more responsive, decentralized, and lean. They become the "intelligent enterprises" of the 1990s, leveraging human and capital resources much more than other firms. They may also take on radically new organizational forms, become "starburst," "inverted," "infinitely flat," or "spiders' web" configurations. By designing and benchmarking their knowledge and service based activities to be "best in world," managers can obliterate overhead costs, smash bureaucracies, motivate personnel, and create greater value for customers and shareholders alike.
