Book Synopsis Outsiders USA; Original Essays on 24 Outgroups in American Society by : Don Spiegel
Download or read book Outsiders USA; Original Essays on 24 Outgroups in American Society written by Don Spiegel and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to bring together, in a single volume, a discussion of some two dozen different social categories whose members can be labeled "outsiders," using our broad definition of the term. The reader of this volume can gain insight into the major similarities and differences of the various outsider categories presented. Each of the chapters was written especially for this book. The authors were selected for their expertise in the area of their chapter content, which more often than not includes involvement in innovative or action-oriented approaches to solving complex social problems. Most chapters follow a similar format: a description of the social category, a presentation of the dilemmas their members face, explorations of traditional as well as recent approaches to resolving their dilemmas, and a brief look at their prospects for more satisfying life situations and potentials. Although comprehensive solutions to the problems outsiders face have yet to be evolved and implemented, we hope that by imparting a more basic understanding of people in outsider categories we will have contributed to that end. For not until outsiders are more fully understood from their own perspective by society-at-large can truly positive changes in our society emerge.

Book Synopsis Third Parties, Outsiders, and Renegades by : Melissa M. Smith

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Third Parties, Outsiders, and Renegades analyzes 10 third-party, outsider, or renegade presidential candidates and explores each one's impact on the political process. The list of modern outsider candidates who have attracted the public’s attention is fairly long, but most of the time the candidates never garner enough support to become elected or they self-destruct somewhere along the way. A few, however, have taken votes away from more mainstream candidates and changed the course of political parties or election outcomes. This book provides readers with an analysis of how their rhetoric, political tactics, and issues have challenged the political status quo and impacted later campaigns. The future viability of outsider candidates is discussed in light of current political polarization and the legacy of Donald J. Trump, the first elected outsider president, and considers how outsider candidates might be able to compete in upcoming elections given the current political divisions within the nation. Scholars and students of communication, political science, and rhetoric will find this book particularly interesting.

This invaluable, four-volume compilation is a comprehensive source of documents that give voice to those who comprise the American mosaic, illustrating the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. Each volume focuses on a major racial/ethnic group: African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and Latinos. Documents chosen by the editors for their utility and relevance to popular areas of study are organized into chronological periods from historical to contemporary. The collection includes eyewitness accounts, legislation, speeches, and interviews. Together, they tell the story of America's diverse population and enable readers to explore historical concepts and contexts from multiple viewpoints. Introductions for each volume and primary document provide background and history that help students understand and critique the material. The work also features a useful primary document guide, bibliographies, and indices to aid teachers, librarians, and students in class work and research.
Book Synopsis Religious Outsiders and the Making of Americans by : R. Laurence Moore
Download or read book Religious Outsiders and the Making of Americans written by R. Laurence Moore and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1987-12-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the curious compulsion to stress Protestant dominance in America's past, this book takes an unorthodox look at religious history in America. Rather than focusing on the usual mainstream Protestant churches--Episcopal, Congregationalist, Methodist, Baptist, and Lutheran--Moore instead turns his attention to the equally important "outsiders" in the American religious experience and tests the realities of American religious pluralism against their history in America. Through separate but interrelated chapters on seven influential groups of "outsiders"--the Mormons, Catholics, Jews, Christian Scientists, Millennialists, 20th-century Protestant Fundamentalists, and the African-American churches--Moore shows that what was going on in mainstream churches may not have been the "normal" religious experience at all, and that many of these "outside" groups embodied values that were, in fact, quintessentially American.
