Book excerpt: "To mark MND0́9s 60th anniversary in 2019, Groundbreaking: 60 Years of National Development in Singapore chronicles the story of Singapore0́9s national development from pre-independence to the present day. Led by a foreword by Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong and a preface by MND Permanent Secretary Ow Foong Pheng, the book draws on newspapers, interviews and photos to explore 200 years of urban planning in Singapore as well as the Ministry0́9s most significant milestones and achievements in shaping Singapore as a city and transforming the lives of citizens through key initiatives and policies. The book outlines how the Ministry and its agencies transformed Singapore in just six decades from squatters in slums to proud homeowners in modern housing estates; from modest shophouses to towering skyscrapers; from dirty, dusty streets to lush gardens and world-renowned skylines. With a pragmatic, can-do spirit, strong camaraderie and a sense of common purpose, the Ministry brought together the custodians of Singapore0́9s built environment0́4planners, developers, architects, policymakers and civil servants0́4to overcome the many challenges that have confronted Singapore in its journey from Third World to First. The Ministry and its agencies are the kampung that built a global city"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major study of John Outram, whose decorative yet elemental architecture has captured the popular imagination. Outram launched his own architectural practice in 1974, soon securing a reputation for innovative, creative and monumental buildings. Their brilliant colours and exuberant gestures earned him a reputation as a post-modernist, but this book explores their deeper background in architectural history, metaphysics and mythology. In addition to the major buildings – including The New House at Wadhurst, the Isle of Dogs Pumping Station and the Judge Institute – the book examines unrealised projects, including Bracken House and Ludgate in the City of London. Running through them all is a storytelling approach that draws upon the mythologies and architectures of the ancient world. This book shows how Outram’s work reconciles iconography with a creative approach to building technology, posing questions about the recovery of architecture’s traditional role of communicating shared values. Geraint Franklin draws on interviews and archival research to shed new light on this important architect. Richly illustrated with previously unpublished images from the practice archive and stunning new photography, the book will delight architects, students and anyone interested in learning more about this significant figure in late 20th century architecture.

Book excerpt: Landscape architecture plays a vital role in creating Singapore's Garden City image. This book helps to explain the Republic's successful implementation of environmental policies since independence to achieve its present-day image. There are ten chapters in the book. The first three cover background information, the historical setting, and the work of the current government. The approach is to evaluate different plans against natural, social, and sensory criteria. The next six chapters are case studies, selected to show landscape planning policies in more detail. The last chapter includes a discussion of comments made about Singapore's landscapes followed by a summary. The book is illustrated by a profusion of maps, diagrams and plans.

It focuses on the ways in which urban spatial forms are textual experiences, subject to interpretative strategies and the influence of other discourses. In addition it also analyzes the experiences of modernization in such cities, but also in terms of the strategies of containment, refurbishment, and loss which this has occasioned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the biggest threats to the survival of many plant and animal species is the destruction or fragmentation of their natural habitats. The conservation of landscape connections, where animals, plants, and ecological processes can move freely from one habitat to another, is therefore an essential part of any new conservation or environmental protection plan. In practice, however, maintaining, creating, and protecting connectivity in our increasingly dissected world is a daunting challenge. This fascinating volume provides a synthesis on the current status and literature of connectivity conservation research and implementation. It shows the challenges involved in applying existing knowledge to real-world examples and highlights areas in need of further study. Containing contributions from leading scientists and practitioners, this topical and thought-provoking volume will be essential reading for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working in conservation biology and natural resource management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rise of the ‘knowledge for development’ paradigm, expert advice has become a prime instrument of foreign aid. At the same time, it has been object of repeated criticism: the chronic failure of ‘technical assistance’ – a notion under which advice is commonly subsumed – has been documented in a host of studies. Nonetheless, international organisations continue to send advisors, promising to increase the ‘effectiveness’ of expert support if their technocratic recommendations are taken up. This book reveals fundamental problems of expert advice in the context of aid that concern issues of power and legitimacy rather than merely flaws of implementation. Based on empirical evidence from South Africa and Tanzania, the authors show that aid-related advisory processes are inevitably obstructed by colliding interests, political pressures and hierarchical relations that impede knowledge transfer and mutual learning. As a result, recipient governments find themselves caught in a perpetual cycle of dependency, continuously advised by experts who convey the shifting paradigms and agendas of their respective donor governments. For young democracies, the persistent presence of external actors is hazardous: ultimately, it poses a threat to the legitimacy of their governments if their policy-making becomes more responsive to foreign demands than to the preferences and needs of their citizens.
