Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outpost "The last day of October!" said the Sun to himself, - "the last day of my favorite month, and the birthday of my little namesake! See if I don't make the most of it!" So the Sun called to all the winds and all the breezes, who, poor things! had but just gone to bed after a terrible night's work, ordering them to get up directly, and sweep the sky as clear as a bell; and bid all the clouds, whether big white mountains, little pinky islands, sweeping mares'-tails, or freckled mackerel-back, to put themselves out of the way, and keep out of it until November; when, as the Sun remarked with a sigh, they would have it all their own way. "And as soon as that job's done," continued he, "you may go to bed again in the Mountains of the Moon; for you will only disturb me if you are about." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outpost, 1922 It was evident that the tour of the nursery had convinced our guest, as it would any other discerning visitor, that Outpost trees and shrubs are exceedingly well grown and are looked after here as they would be on a gentleman's estate. The rugged hills and wind-swept spaces and wide expanse of ground give our plants a clean bill of health and a hardihood which insures their successful growth under prevailing conditions in our Northern States. From her own drowned valleys, the harbours that knew the ships of Gades and of Gaul, her people have moved westward and linked the Old world with the new. At times she catches the light that floods across from Europe, and adds to its brightness the ardent glow of her response. At times the seawmist gathers along her mountain-barriers, and she sinks back into the haze of the Atlantic, elusive' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outpost in Papua There are two ways of studying the work of the Church abroad. On the one hand, bearing in mind the great Final Object, we can master the annual reports, compare the statistics, register gain or loss, and grapple in earnest with the problems which present themselves. And indeed we want much more of this kind of conscientious study. Our missionaries at the front have a right to the very best wisdom and experience and knowledge which the Home Church can offer for the problems of the Mission Field go down to the roots of Christianity itself. But there is another and easier kind of study. There is the work of the Imagination, whereby we seek to grasp the everyday facts of Mission Work, and make them live before our eyes as we sit at home. We sadly lack imagination, and the average Churchman's conception of the circumstances of the Mission Field, based upon a few crude facts, is often ludicrously beside the mark. The consequence is that we fail to offer the intelligent sympathy which might often give the lonely Missionary the consoling knowledge that at least we understand his difficulties. He wants stronger meat to support him in his work than a sentimental admiration based upon ignorance of the facts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tactical Walks It is to provide instruction in just this class of problems that the Tactical Walk has been devised and developed. If it is efficiently conducted, it will certainly familiarize noncommissioned officers with this class of duties. We take the noncommissioned officers from the theory of the classroom and map maneuvers right out on tactical exercises with troops without giving them any preliminary practical training. They are not sure of themselves yet. The Tactical Walk is the intermediate step between the classroom and theory and the actual handling of troops, which fits the man for the duties of troop handling. In the practical training of troops the Tactical Walk finds its broad field of application. You decide that you want to instruct your company in outpost work. Select the terrain that you desire to use; draw up your problem and the several situations connected therewith along the lines indicated herein. Take your noncommissioned officers out on a Tactical Walk and solve the problem. The next day, while the situations and their solution are still fresh in their minds, take the company out for a terrain exercise over this same ground and solve the same problem. You will see that the noncommissioned officers will go about their work in an intelligent and straightforward manner. There will be no hesitation and indecision. This inspires the confidence of the men in their squad and platoon and platoon leaders, and your company has learned something really worth while. This is not to say that one exercise of this class will suffice. You may have to give your company a dozen such. Now take the same problem and work it out in the same manner on a different piece of ground. You will see a marked improvement in the noncommissioned officers grasping the points of the Tactical Walk. You will see them gaining confidence in themselves. You will see that the men have more confidence in them and respect for their ability. After the two phases of training have been carried out as outlined above, you are ready to enter into maneuver with another company. The Tactical Walk will be found suitable for teaching the officers and noncommissioned officers of the cadet corps in military schools. The commandant may work up his problems and conduct the walks as indicated herein. The members of the Officers' Reserve Corps will find herein a wealth of material for their study and practical application. This is exactly the class of instruction they will receive at the officers' training camps each year. The Director The successful conduct of the Tactical Walk depends to a considerable degree upon the tactical knowledge of the Director and his ability to impart knowledge to others. Therefore, before starting on a Tactical Walk, study up on all the points that you desire to bring out. In other words, make a detailed solution of the problem and the principles involved.
