Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Latin Elements This little book embodies, in the main, such hints and comments upon Latin Accidence as the writer has, after an experience of many years, found useful and practical to those in, his college classes, and to those whom he has prepared for entrance into the leading universities. It is intended to supplement the Latin Grammar, by calling attention to those points which every student must know; while, inasmuch as obscure and idiomatic expressions are always explained -in text-book notes and references, actual tests have shown that these outlines give all information necessary for a working knowledge of the language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Latin Grammar A little more than twenty years since, the writer published a book of Latin Lessons and Tables, the plates of which were destroyed in the great Boston fire in 1872. The references in grammatical etymologies and syntax were made to Andrews and Stoddard's Grammar, - so long a popular and standard text-book, - with also references to the added Tables. I quote, for a purpose, from the preface of that book: - "We have added, with more labor on our part than in other parts of the book, a series of Illustrative Tables, They are designed principally to be supplementary to the Grammar, which, with all its excellences, is confessedly deficient in etymological and syntactical analyses, euphonic changes in inflection, etc., as are all the Latin Grammars yet published in this country. It must often have been a matter of surprise to the student of Latin, that, while so much has been done in this department in the Greek language, so little has been attempted in the Latin. The author finds on this subject the ground mostly unbroken, and very few way-marks to guide his investigations. He therefore claims the indulgence of his fellow-teachers in respect to many of his conclusions, for which he holds himself alone responsible. If this imperfect effort shall contribute to a more advanced system of Latin etymology and syntax, he will be rewarded for his labor." Since then almost every year has brought out a new Grammar, with more or less improvements in the points indicated in the above quotation. Two or three popular authors have improved upon themselves in new editions, with remarkable changes, particularly in the department of etymology. Many of the results indicated in the author's Tables of twenty years ago have been reached almost identically. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin Language: A Historical Outline of Its Sounds Inflections, and Syntax This book is a revision of my Appendix to Bennett's Latin Grammar, published in 1895. That book was originally prepared as a series of lectures to advanced students on subjects not covered in any Latin Grammar published in America. The title "Appendix," however, was misleading and gave to many a wrong impression of the purpose and scope of the book, which was in reality written long in advance of the publication of my Latin Grammar and entirely without reference to that work. The new title is more appropriate to the views discussed and the facts brought out; hence the change. In the revision some dozen pages of old matter have been omitted, while nearly forty pages of new matter have been introduced; but the general plan and scope of the book are unchanged. I am indebted to Professor J. C. Rolfe, of the University of Pennsylvania, and to Professor Charles L. Durham, of Cornell University, for valuable suggestions made while the book was passing through the press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Part of Jacobs and Doring's Latin Reader: Adapted to Andrews and Stoddard's Latin Grammar, and to Andrew's First Latin Book The references at the foot of the pages relate to the sections and subordinate divisions of Andrews and Stod dard's Latin Grammar. The references to Andrews' First Latin Book may be found at the close of the volume. The marks of reference in the text refer both to the notes at the foot of the page and to those at the end of the book. In the latter series, indeed, other notes are occasionally added, and their place is denoted by quoting the words of the text to which such notes relate. The following extracts from the preface to the first ed i tion will sufficiently explain the manner in which the Reader was originally prepared by its present editor. Three things were found to claim particular attention, in preparing a new edition of this work. The first was the ar rangement of the Introductory Lessons, so as best to illus trate the principles of the Grammar, to which they were to be adapted. The second was to furnish such grammatical notes and references as should be necessary, in order to explain the more difficult forms and constructions occur ring in the work. The third was the preparation of a vocabulary more perfectly adapted, than those usually found in introductory works, to the purpose for which it was intended. To accomplish the first purpose, it was found necessary to make a few additions to the original work, with the in tention of illustrating more fully the principal rules of Latin construction. That the object of the Introductory Lessons may be better understood, and the place which each lesson occupies in syntax more fully apprehended, each section is prefaced by a series of questions relating to those parts of the Grammar intended to be illustrated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eton Latin Grammar: With the Addition of Many Useful Notes and Observations and Also of the Accents and Quantity; Together With an Entirely New Version of All the Latin Rules and Examples The Notes, appended to the Text, are of the most useful description, being selections from the best authors of antiquity condensed into as few words as possible, yet always preserving a luci dity. The limits of the Work (for it professes to be nothing more than a short Introduction to the Latin language, ) precluded the adoption of many observations in addition to those actually made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Latin Book: Being the First Part of Jacobs' and Doring's "Elementarbuch," or Latin Reader, With an Enlarged and Critical Vocabulary, and Notes Adapted to the Author's Latin Grammar IN the year 1834, feeling the want, in my own school, of some elementary work in Latin, that should have a vocab ulary much fuller and more critical than any then in use, I prepared what was called the Sequel to my First Lessons in Latin. It consisted of the Geography of the Nations of Antiquity, from the Latin Reader of Jacobs, with such notes, questions, and vocabulary as I thought would be useful. It reached a second edition, and was liked very much by all who used it. But consisting of so small a portion of text, and standing alone, as it were, and not as one of a series of Latin books, where each mutually depends on, and aids its fellows, it gradually fell into disuse.
