Book Synopsis Forest Tree Breeding in Europe by : Luc E Pâques
Download or read book Forest Tree Breeding in Europe written by Luc E Pâques and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest tree breeding has been ongoing for more than 70 years across Europe. It has successfully generated improved varieties for the major economical forest tree species. They are part of the present European forestry landscape and largely contribute to intensive wood production and other forest activities. In this book, we describe the state-of-art of breeding for the main forest tree species. We provide a comprehensive, unique and up-to-date overview of the major scientific results and breeding achievements gathered from the many programmes scattered across Europe. The book is divided into 10 chapters, each as a monograph corresponding to a species or group of species Abies spp., (Larix spp., Picea abies, Picea sitchensis, Pinus sylvestris, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Mediterranean pines; Acer pseudoplatanus, Fraxinus excelsior, and Prunus avium). Each of them is written by a group of experts and focuses on the distribution and economical importance of the species; motivation for breeding and breeding objectives; intraspecific genetic variability, breeding populations and breeding strategy; forest reproductive material deployment including mass-propagation and, prospects and perspectives for joint research and breeding. The book is a unique and up-dated source of information for students, researchers and professionals interested in the genetics and domestication of forest tree species.

Download or read book Practical Plant Physiology written by Frederick Keeble and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2021-03-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1910, “Practical Plant Physiology” is an accessible guide to elementary botany. Originally designed for students and teachers, it offers an introductory outline of the experiments and experimental methods used in botany and plant investigation, as well as other useful information related to the subject. This volume will be of considerable utility to those with an interest in plants and botany, and it would make for a fantastic addition to collections of allied literature. Contents include: “The Problem of Plant-Physiology and the Method by which They are to be Solved”, “Germination”, “The Mode of Germination of Seeds”, “The Parts of the Seed and Seedling”, “The Resting and Active States of Seeds”, “The Food-Materials of Seeds”, “Changes During Germination”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now complete with a specially-commissioned new introduction on botany.

Book Synopsis The Sustainable Role of the Tree in Environmental Protection Technologies by : Edita Baltrėnaitė
Download or read book The Sustainable Role of the Tree in Environmental Protection Technologies written by Edita Baltrėnaitė and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-13 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes ways of using trees and their byproducts in environmental protection technologies and methodologies throughout their lifecycles. The tree, the planet’s main source of biomass, is an indispensable tool for sustainable technologies, and the authors present a holistic picture of how and why in this volume. The authors describe the indispensable role of the living tree in phytoremediation and biomonitoring and detail the relationship of the tree with its surrounding ecosystem. The direct and indirect relationships of a tree at its vegetation period with various components of the ecosystem (i.e. atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and soil) contribute to the role of a tree as the medium for integrating aerogenic and edaphic pollutants. Trees phytostabilize pollutants in their organisms and remove them from the soil. The ability of some species of trees to reflect the quality of the environment makes a basis for the environmental bioindication, while quantitative representation of the chemical composition of the surrounding environment allows for the use of trees in biomonitoring. Morphological features of trees (e.g. annual tree rings) allow us to observe environmental conditions in the past and retrospectively evaluate them. This monograph also details how wood products (e.g. biochar, chips, bark, etc.) of a tree after it has died are used in environmental technologies. Due to the specific morphological form and physical and chemical composition of wood products, they may be used as active materials in the technologies aimed at reducing pollution in an effective and sustainable manner.
