Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of A Handbook for the Study of Mental Health provides a comprehensive review of the sociology of mental health. Chapters by leading scholars and researchers present an overview of historical, social and institutional frameworks. Part I examines social factors that shape psychiatric diagnosis and the measurement of mental health and illness, theories that explain the definition and treatment of mental disorders and cultural variability. Part II investigates effects of social context, considering class, gender, race and age, and the critical role played by stress, marriage, work and social support. Part III focuses on the organization, delivery and evaluation of mental health services, including the criminalization of mental illness, the challenges posed by HIV, and the importance of stigma. This is a key research reference source that will be useful to both undergraduates and graduate students studying mental health and illness from any number of disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intelligence and Social Valuation: A Practical Method for the Diagnosis of Mental Deficiency and Other Forms of Social Inefficiency It has been pointed out by a writer (1) in the "Fortnightly Review" for January, 1917, that the "root problem of all the after-war problems is the conservation of the wealth of the Nation of to-morrow which resides in its boys and girls of today. The future of the country depends on their future." Whilst it is impossible to enumerate here the many problems which are intimately associated with the question of child conservation, there is no doubt that one of the most pressing of these problems - whether it be regarded from its medical, sociological, or educational aspects - is that of mental deficiency. As it is clear that post-war reconstruction will depend on the mentality and efficiency of the people, it follows that any community which comprises an appreciable percentage of unrecognized mentally defective persons will be severely handicapped in the work of social reconstruction unless such persons can be recognized and treated. Feeble-mindedness or moronity has been variously defined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Psychology of Special Abilities and Disabilities (Classic Reprint) written by Augusta F. Bronner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Special Abilities and Disabilities With the ever increasing demand in education for recognition of the individual rather than the mass, it is remarkable that no attempt has been made as yet to formulate specifically the problems of specialized abili ties and disabilities. On the side of mental defect, interest is centered so largely on testing and caring for individuals of general low intelligence that the problems of narrower types of defect have been neglected and still are largely misunderstood. Some writers have touched upon related questions, mainly in referring to the fact of individual differences in mental capacities, but only general statements are to be found; nowhere else have special defects been outlined and nowhere can one find even enumeration of the types of variation that are practically important. Book Synopsis Mental Retardation by : National Research Council
Download or read book Mental Retardation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current estimates suggest that between one and three percent of people living in the United States will receive a diagnosis of mental retardation. Mental retardation, a condition characterized by deficits in intellectual capabilities and adaptive behavior, can be particularly hard to diagnose in the mild range of the disability. The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides income support and medical benefits to individuals with cognitive limitations who experience significant problems in their ability to perform work and may therefore be in need of governmental support. Addressing the concern that SSA's current procedures are consistent with current scientific and professional practices, this book evaluates the process used by SSA to determine eligibility for these benefits. It examines the adequacy of the SSA definition of mental retardation and its current procedures for assessing intellectual capabilities, discusses adaptive behavior and its assessment, advises on ways to combine intellectual and adaptive assessment to provide a complete profile of an individual's capabilities, and clarifies ways to differentiate mental retardation from other conditions.
Book Synopsis Ellis' Handbook of Mental Deficiency, Psychological Theory and Research by : William E. MacLean Jr.
Download or read book Ellis' Handbook of Mental Deficiency, Psychological Theory and Research written by William E. MacLean Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 16 years since the publication of the second edition of this volume, psychological theory and research in mental retardation has continued to expand and extend scientific, theoretical, and clinical understanding of this most complex and challenging human condition. Explicit effort has been made to translate theory and research into useful and efficacious assessment, intervention, prevention, and policy actions. This third edition provides an opportunity to critique major conceptual developments and empirical research in an effort to stimulate further behavioral research of practical, social importance. The Handbook presents work by prominent contributors to a major scientific endeavor that has grown dramatically during the last three decades. The challenge for each author was to identify important theoretical and empirical issues, provide a critical, selective review of exemplary research, and discuss the questions that remain unanswered in each area. In short, the goal for this third edition was to consolidate the knowledge gained during the past 30 years and to present a blueprint for future research in mental retardation, the broader field of learning disabilities, and other developmental disorders such as autism. Providing totally different coverage and direction from the previous edition, this text fills a crucial instructional need in graduate courses related to the psychology of mental retardation. With its emphasis on psychological research and theory, it offers an important alternative to many available texts that primarily emphasize the application of research.
