Book excerpt: Natasha Roy, a Forensic data analyst with a firm that investigates financial crime, finds her perfect life crumbling to pieces when the love of her life, Neil, is brutally murdered right after an ugly separation. It is then that she discovers that Neils friend, Ranveer, an ex-army Intelligence Bureau officer who is embittered by a heinous act during a classified mission that left him physically unfit for a field job, is the investigator on the case, with a personal vendetta to incarcerate her. It is then that she decides to take matters in her own hand instead of watching her life fall apart like a mute spectator, by putting to use the particular set of skills that she had acquired while investigating the major financial institutions of the world. She launches a crusade that leads her to find out that the man she loved was not whom she thought he was and with every stone she turns, she finds a buried secret darker than the one before. Exploring their unconventional ways for finding answers, they cross paths and stumble upon the truth that neither of them could have ever imagined to be the reason behind the murder.

Book excerpt: “SUSPENDED FOR LIFE” takes an empirical look via real experiences at how Zero Tolerance Policies contained in the schools “Code of Conduct “disregards the rights of the student, especially students with disabilities. These policies are failing students everywhere including my residence of Syracuse New York. Statistically these unfair and biased “Zero Tolerance Policies” have led to very high suspension rates affecting mainly, inner-city students but overwhelmingly target students with IEPs, 504 Accommodations, the “untested but suspected LD student “ and the intellectually gifted student. Healthcare, Mental Health and Medical Privacy (HIPPA) now play large roles in school especially in decisions to suspend a student however coupled with a school districts Code of Conduct they have become a crucial aspect for suspension. Once you understand the link between a referral to “In-School-Suspension (ISSwarehousing students) or a referral for Out-of-School Suspension (OSS—push out of students) you will realize that in most cases suspension can lead directly to the prison industrial complex for our young women and men. Stopping this from happening to your student may depend on how well you are prepared to advocate for your child. We must not allow suspension to push out our children because ostensibly it may be ensuring them a life sentence of unemployment, crime, or even death. We say it starts at home with the parents, so if we can better understand our student’s rights and the rights we have as parents we can better prepare ourselves to advocate for our student and to hold the school district accountable for the Education of Our Children!

This volume provides up-to-date summaries of research on the essential topics from the first edition, as well as fresh perspectives and chapters on new topics. It is the perfect tool for both graduate students and practitioners interested in a field that is fascinating but not immediately accessible without the proper guidance.

Among the most pressing concerns for inexperienced teachers is classroom management, a concern of equal importance to the general public in light of behavior problems and breakdowns in discipline that grab newspaper headlines. But classroom management is not just about problems and what to do when things go wrong and chaos erupts. It’s about how to run a classroom so as to elicit the best from even the most courteous group of students. An array of skills is needed to produce such a learning environment. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Classroom Management raises issues and introduces evidence-based, real-world strategies for creating and maintaining well-managed classrooms where learning thrives. Students studying to become teachers will need to develop their own classroom management strategies consistent with their own philosophies of teaching and learning. This work aims to open their eyes to the range of issues and the array of skills they might integrate into their unique teaching styles. Key Features: 325 signed entries organized in A-to-Z fashion across two volumes Reader′s Guide grouping related entries thematically References/Further Readings and Cross-References sections Chronology in the back matter Resource Guide in the appendix This encyclopedia is an excellent scholarly source for students who are pursuing a degree or position in the field of education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Education Council Act of 1991 established the National Education Commission on Time and Learning as an independent advisory body and called for a comprehensive review of the relationship between time and learning in U.S. schools. This document serves as a supplementary volume to the commission's first report released in May 1994, which found that most school-reform designs are structurally flawed by their adherence to a traditional school calendar. This volume describes innovative approaches to the use of school time. It provides nearly 40 examples of exemplary efforts to make better use of available time and extend the amount of time students spend learning. The brief program descriptions are from 15 elementary schools, 15 middle and senior high schools, 4 districtwide efforts, and 6 special programs. They include public and private schools in rural, urban, and suburban areas from 26 states. Information for reaching contact persons is provided. A review of the programs indicates that many different kinds of schools and districts have already implemented many of the commission's recommendations. The most common approaches in descending order include: (1) redesigning available time; (2) employing technology; (3) extending the school day or year; (4) providing time for professional development; and (5) providing support services for children or families. Finally, the approaches to the redesign of time usage differ by school level. (LMI)

Acclaimed authors Gene Hall, Linda Quinn, and Donna Gollnick thoroughly prepare teacher education candidates to make a difference as teachers, presenting first-hand stories and evidence-based practices while offering a student-centered approach to learning. The authors target one of the biggest challenges facing many of today’s schools—making sure that all students are learning—and help teachers make student learning the primary focus in all that they do. From true-to-life challenges that teachers will face (high-stakes testing, student learning assessments, low teacher retention, Common Core Standards) to the inspiration and joy they will discover throughout their teaching careers, this text paints a realistic picture of the real life of a teacher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite Asia’s rapid growth, vast sections of its population still live in poverty and suffer hunger and other forms of deprivation. Merely relying on Asia’s growth will not help the deprived see a better future in their lifetimes. Ways must be found to make growth more inclusive combined with proactive public action to bring substantial improvements in the lives of Asia’s deprived people. This book is written by a set of experts who have been working long on reducing various aspects of human deprivations in Asia. It begins with a discussion of the massive dimensions of deprivations that continue to exist in Asia. Although many countries have adopted inclusive growth strategies to enable the benefits of growth to reach the poor, much more needs to be done to make growth processes more broad based and beneficial to all. The book points to essential action needed to bring this about. The book also emphasizes the crucial role of determined, target driven public action if Asia’s deprived populations are to see substantial improvement in their lives. Practical measures to tackle problems of hunger, unemployment, gender discrimination, ill health, lack of quality basic education, inadequate access to clean water and basic sanitation are each discussed. The problems of the urban poor and migrants who continue to flock to Asia’s cities are also highlighted. The book also emphasizes the need for an appropriate environment for public action to succeed including strong participatory institutions, effective governance, social protection and regional cooperation.
