Book excerpt: Hiring a nanny--and getting along with her afterward--may be one of the most important things that parents do, yet many of us approach the whole business with fear and trembling, or at least a lot of questions. Even parents who may manage dozens of employees at work can be at a loss when it comes to dealing with the person who will be looking after their children. Nanny, au pair, caregiver--no matter the term, the thorny issues remain the same: -How do you find someone you like and trust? -Should you invite the nanny to Thanksgiving dinner? -When should you raise her fee--and by how much? -What should you do when the au pair is a flirt? -How do you sort out the laundry and other chores? -Nanny surveillance--should you spy? The Nanny Book provides real, down-to-earth solutions for almost every conceivable issue or problem. Filled with advice gleaned through interviews with families and nannies, this book will turn parents into their own experts. Other books focus almost exclusively on hiring a caregiver. The Nanny Book is the only guide that gives smart, parent-tested solutions to those sticky situations that can make or break the relationship.

Book excerpt: Everyone knows what a nanny is, yet the role of the modern nanny is still widely misunderstood. State of the Nanny provides a clear-eyed assessment of today's nannying industry and its potential for improvement. Essential reading for nannies and those who employ them. "Louise Dunham is THE expert on putting the CARE into childcare. State of the Nanny is a wonderful resource for families considering employing a nanny, and for nannies themselves. A thoroughly engaging book that eloquently discusses the political and personal whilst keeping the most important people - the children - as a highest value." -- Pinky McKay, lactation consultant and parenting advisor, and best selling author of Sleeping Like a Baby, Toddler Tactics, and other titles. "A timely call for recognition of nannies everywhere, but also for a return to an older set of values that enveloped our local societies and enabled working women for centuries to conduct their economic work outside of the home..." -- Jacalyn S Burke, author The Nanny Time Bomb - Navigating the crisis in child care From the Introduction: I've been working in the nanny industry for just under 30 years, a period in which organised child care both inside and outside the home have been through many ups and downs, and changed enormously. Much has changed for the better, but there is still plenty of room for improvement and it is very important that we continue to seek that improvement. That requires people who have informed opinions to speak out, and anyone who knows me knows that as well as my long experience in the industry, I'm rarely short of an opinion. This book is one way of expressing my opinions, which is why I've written it. When I reflect on the last 30 years, we are not as far along as I would have hoped. Progress is slow in a number of areas. With each change of federal or state government we get incremental change, but rarely anything bold. Sometimes there is a step back rather than forward. In some cases governments will create or clarify the laws - such as the requirement that nannies cannot operate as independent contractors - but then do little or nothing to implement those laws in practice. We have made some good ground in building the 'professional' status of nannies, though there is still an awful long road to travel on that issue. There is still not the necessary level of respect, support and understanding for the challenges that nannies face, the level of responsibility they take on and the fact that they earn their money and should be paid accordingly. The 'anyone can mind a child' mindset is still widespread and needs to be removed. Parents need to understand that to use untrained carers (usually in order to save money) is to compromise on their children's care, which is ultimately demeaning to the children themselves by tacitly saying that they are not important enough to be professionally cared for. This book is a call to arms on these and a number of other issues. My hope is that it will be read, discussed and debated by nannies, nanny agency operators and those who hire nannies. As the ancient Greek proverb says 'A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in'.

Book excerpt: FOR AN INSIDER GLIMPSE of the world's rich, famous, and overly indulged, who better to ask than the people who take care of their children? After all, these are the women (and men!) who see them before makeup and wardrobe and after a few too many cocktails. Amidst the fantastic luxury, sexy celebrities, and hyped-up household politics, the nanny certainly has more to handle than diapers and bedtimes. But if you're just looking for dirt, you won't find it in these pages. Instead, authors Julie Swales and Stella Reid share anecdotes and insights about what happens when money, power, and fame intersect with the highly personal arena of raising children.

Book excerpt: Table of ContentsIntroductionGeneral Information About Nannies & HousekeepersAdvantages, Disadvantages, & Costs of Hiring a NannySearching For The Right NannyAlternative Ways To Search for a NannyGetting the Right FitNanny Claims And Children VouchersConclusionAuthor BioPublisherIntroductionI want to thank you for downloading the book "How to Find a Nanny for Your Kids."This book contains the basic steps and strategies on how you can find a suitable nanny for their kids, especially during those desperate moments when you have a lot going on and you need someone to help you to look out for your children when you are not around or too busy to do so yourself. It is true what people say, that nannies are usually the best option if you need your kids to have a heart-to-heart relationship with their caretaker; also a good nanny will, on a regular basis, become just like another member of your family. As you begin this journey, it is valuable to understand that nannies are usually qualified in childcare; most of them usually have several years of experience. Since this is their profession, most of the time they do their duty for longer hours than normal child minders. Good nannies tend to provide a continuity of care within the confinement of your home, something that you might not get with a mere child minder.Furthermore, it is important to actually know what you intend to achieve from nanny services since they are expected to tend to all aspects of caring for your children, which includes doing the children's' laundry, cleaning their rooms, as well as cooking their food, just to mention a few. This guide will inform you on why such duties should be agreed upon before the care commences, and also why you might have to re-insure your car so that the nanny can use it during emergency cases, or alternatively provide expenses for fuel purchase if they have a car of their own. With this book, you will be able to understand several different types of nannies in order to identify the type of caretaker that is suitable for your family i.e. the daily nanny who leaves at the end of the day and only works for an agreed amount of time or schedule; the live-in nanny who lives in your house and has a room of his or her own; the nanny share who works for more than one family and sometimes looks after all the kids in those families together. In addition, the differences between registered and non-registered nannies have been well illustrated in this guide, as well as why parents should claim financial help in order to pay for registered nannies. Take your time to go through this book keenly as it is quite useful. It has been written in an interesting and simple way and it is the hope of the author that you will enjoy every single bit of it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Does my mom pay you to talk to me?" We all want the best for our children, and we often see them in terms of how we would like to see ourselves: attending elite schools, vacationing in luxury hotels, wearing designer clothes, mastering admirable skills, making the right social connections, and enjoying all the myriad benefits of wealth, status, and privilege. But what if your daughter doesn't want to be a supermodel or learn to play Tchaikovsky on the piano? What if your son is shy rather than confident, and shows no interest in becoming a sports icon but would rather play quietly with his Legos? What should we really want for our children? What does it really take to make them happy? What are we teaching them about human worth in the example we set for them by the way we live? Elena Mincheva worked for a wealthy American family as a nanny and household helper, and her message to America's hard-working, middle-class parents who wish they could give their children "just a little more" is one of both hope and encouragement: Your children are not the sum of what you can or can't give them. You are enough. Your love is enough.
