Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out and About London IT was a lucid, rain-washed morning - one of those rare mornings when London seems to laugh before you, disclosing her random beauties. In every park the trees were hung with adolescent tresses, green and white and yellow, and the sky was busy with scudding clouds. Even the solemn bricks had caught something of the sudden colour of the day, and London seemed to toss in its long, winter sleep and to take the heavy breaths of the awakening sluggard. The majority of the objects themselves, upon which I have written, are old - and the accounts we have of them are old - but, as I have before stated, the theme is exhaustless. I have principally endeavored to describe persons and things as I found them - nothing more. The pleasure of occupying many leisure hours has repaid me for all trouble taken with my notes and thus, with a clear conscience and without apology, I cast the drop into the fathomless sea of books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unnoticed London Bond Street, because they are obsessed by the idea that to see London requires some occult store of knowledge and energy, and their eyes are sealed to the interest and beauty that lie around their path. Finally there are people like the old lady who, when she heard I was writing a book about old London, asked with astonishment, Is there anything old left in London? I hasten to add that I have not tried in the following pages to tell of every interesting place or even of all there is of interest in the places visited, - only enough, I hope, to make people go and see for themselves and have the pleasure of discovering the rest. I am not afraid that if they once go to the Chapter House they will miss any of its beauties: my dread is lest they fail to go there, from the vision of a plethora of things they think they have no time to see. For I want more than anything else to prick the curiosity of the travellers up and down the streets of the city who miss so much pleasure that they might have so easily, because they are not alive to all the interesting and un expected things that wait for their coming just round the corner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Round London: Down East and Up West IT was the intention of the author of this book to add to it, by way of preface, a few lines of assurance to its readers that every story and every incident contained in it is based upon actual fact, and that only so much disguise has been anywhere assumed as was absolutely necessitated by the exigencies of publication. Un happily, the severe illness against which Montagu Williams has been struggling with so much courage and fortitude for so long a time prostrated him immediately after the last sketch was written, and he was consequently unable to do anything with regard to the little preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In and Out of London: Or the Half-Holidays of a Town Clerk I have endeavoured, in these pages, to describe a few Of the places which may be thus visited. Some Of them are in town, some in the country, but all are within easy reach. And many places remain Of which, though they are within the limit of an afternoon, I have said nothing. Such are Lambeth and the Tower, Westminster and St. Paul's, and many others within the town; while, a short way out, Windsor and Eltham, King's Langley and Chertsey, Hatfield, and a hundred more would have been accessible. But I am not writing a guide-book, and have selected my subjects rather on the princi ple that no place near London is so uninteresting that something may not be found in its history, or its situation, or its buildings, worth thinking over.
