Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ourselves Alone in Ulster In a speech delivered on December 14, 1917, Mr. Lloyd George spoke of "a definite and clear line of action, intelligible in consciences of a certain quality" - "Ourselves first, ourselves last, ourselves all the time, and ourselves alone." "It is pretty mean, he added, but there are in every country men built that way, and you must reckon with them in the world." A subtle question of casuistry could be raised as to how great a number of people must be united to make this motto either a despicable or an honourable one. It would doubtless be thought very creditable in an Empire. How about a United Kingdom - a Nation - or half a Province of a nation? This problem was decided without difficulty by northeast Ulster. The superiority of its wealth, the vigour of its creed, the self-confidence of its men - there were its sufficient credentials for a policy of ourselves first and last, "ourselves all the time." North-east Ulster had no wrongs pr sufferings to proclaim to the human conscience. The only trouble was a story as old as the world, that in its proud prosperity it fell into those fearful apprehensions that haunt the way of the wealthy, driving them in every age to multiply safeguards and shelters for their riches and power. North-east Ulster required, in a changing world, that the guarantees of its commercial interests should remain unchanged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early April of 1888, sixteen-year-old Mary Ann Donovan stood alone on the quays of Queenstown in county Cork waiting to board a ship for Boston in far-off America. She was but one of almost 700,000 young, usually unmarried women, traveling alone, who left their homes in Ireland during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in a move unprecedented in the annals of European emigration. Using a wide variety of sources -- many of which appear here for the first time -- including personal reminiscences, interviews, oral histories, letter, and autobiographies as well as data from Irish and American census and emigration repots, Janet Nolan makes a sustained analysis of this migration of a generation of young women that puts a new light on Irish social and economic history. By the late nineteenth century changes in Irish life combined to make many young women unneeded in their households and communities; rather than accept a marginal existence, they elected to seek a better life in a new world, often with the encouragement and help of a female relative who had already emigrated. Mary Ann Donovan's journey was representative of thousands of journeys made by Irish women who could truly claim that they had seized control over their lives, by themselves, alone. This book tells their story.

Book excerpt: A devout young boy in rural Ohio, Andrew Evans had his life mapped for him: baptism, mission, Brigham Young University, temple marriage, and children of his own. But as an awkward gay kid, bullied and bored, he escaped into the glossy pages of National Geographic and the wide promise of the world atlas. The Black Penguin is Evans's memoir, travel tale, and love story of his eventual journey to the farthest reaches of the map, a wild yet touching adventure across some of the most astonishing landscapes on Earth. Ejected from church and shunned by his family as a young man, Evans embarks on an ambitious overland journey halfway across the world. Riding public transportation, he crosses swamps, deserts, mountains, and jungles, slowly approaching his lifelong dream and ultimate goal: Antarctica. With each new mile comes laughter, pain, unexpected friendship, true weirdness, unsettling realities, and some hair-raising moments that eventually lead to a singular discovery on a remote beach at the bottom of the world. Evans's 12,000-mile voyage becomes a soulful quest to balance faith, family, and self, reminding us that, in the end, our lives are defined by the roads we take, the places we touch, and those we hold nearest.

Book excerpt: How did David Trimble, the bete noire of Irish nationalism and bien pensant opinion transform himself into a peacemaker? How did this unfashionable, petit bourgeois Orangeman come to win a standing ovation at the Labour Party conference? How, indeed, did this taciturn academic with few real intimates succeed in becoming the leader of the Ulster Unionists? And how did he carry them with him, against the odds, to make an historic compromise with Irish nationalism?
