Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our West China Mission: Being a Somewhat Extensive Summary by the Missionaries on the Field of the Work During the First Twenty-Five Years of the Canadian Methodist Mission in the Province of Szechwan, Western China Canadian Methodism has been making history and writing on the venerable face of China for twenty-eight years. Brief as is this period in the life of that potentially great Empire, it is a much larger fraction in the days of our Church, but in both it has a spiritual and eternal significance beyond words. What a monument it is of vision, consecration, sacrifice, heroism, inventiveness, spiritual diplomacy and practical sagacity, in those who planted the banner of our Church and bore it 'mid thick fighting until it has been the beneficence of protection, and a symbol of healing for body and soul; a great light shining in and dispelling the deep darkness of an awakening nation! The passing of Omar L. Kilborn so recently in itself demands a history of the first great period of our endeavors there, but by the glimpses of his greatness we are permitted to catch in this book, we are assured that time must pass before he and his fellow laborers are seen in their true perspective. This book, the precursor of many that must be written to reveal the activities and the successes of our Church through its devoted missionaries, is made luminous and appealing with appended illustrations, and is indispensable to the student who would visualize Chinese work and conditions at first hand to-day. It should be in the hands of every intelligent Canadian Methodist, and be read as a means of entering into that world-citizenship, to which every Christian is called and should aspire. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. When China’s War of Resistance against Japan began in July 1937, it sparked an immediate health crisis throughout China. In the end, China not only survived the war but emerged from the trauma with a more cohesive population. Intimate Communities argues that women who worked as military and civilian nurses, doctors, and midwives during this turbulent period built the national community, one relationship at a time. In a country with a majority illiterate, agricultural population that could not relate to urban elites’ conceptualization of nationalism, these women used their work of healing to create emotional bonds with soldiers and civilians from across the country. These bonds transcended the divides of social class, region, gender, and language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian missions and missionaries have had a distinctive role in Canada's cultural history. With Canadian Missionaries, Indigenous Peoples, Alvyn Austin and Jamie S. Scott have brought together new and established Canadian scholars to examine the encounters between Christian (Roman Catholic and Protestant) missionaries and the indigenous peoples with whom they worked in nineteenth- and twentieth-century domestic and overseas missions. This tightly integrated collection is divided into three sections. The first contains essays on missionaries and converts in western Canada and in the arctic. The essays in the second section investigate various facets of the Canadian missionary presence and its legacy in east Asia, India, and Africa. The third section examines the motives and methods of missionaries as important contributors to Canadian museum holdings of artefacts from Huronia, Kahnawaga, and Alaska, as well as China and the South Pacific. Broadly adopting a postcolonial perspective, Canadian Missionaries, Indigenous Peoples contributes greatly to the understanding of missionaries not only as purveyors of western religious values, but also as vehicles for cultural exchange between Native and non-Native Canadians, as well as between Canadians and the indigenous peoples of other countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their memoir, two American Mennonite women share stories of how they connected with students at a medical college in Sichuan, China, in the mid-1980s. Their host city, Luzhou, had been designated a “closed city,” which meant that foreigners could not visit it without special permission. Fran and Mary Ann were initially escorted whenever they left the campus. Even though they eventually were able to roam the city, their interactions with Chinese people were always scrutinized. Still, by hosting English conversation parties, taking taiji lessons, interacting with students in the classroom, meeting people on walks, and going on outings, the teachers made meaningful connections. Educational, cross-cultural exchanges such as the one Fran and Mary Ann participated in suggest a path forward for easing tensions between the United States and China today.
