Book Synopsis Essential Readings in Canadian Constitutional Politics by : Peter H. Russell
Download or read book Essential Readings in Canadian Constitutional Politics written by Peter H. Russell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Readings in Canadian Constitutional Politics introduces students, scholars, and practitioners to classic authors and writings on the principles of the Canadian Constitution as well as to select contemporary material. To complement rather than duplicate the state of the field, it deals with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and with Canadian mega-constitutional politics in passing only, focusing instead on institutions, federalism, intergovernmental relations, bilingualism and binationalism, the judiciary, minority rights, and constitutional renewal. Many of the selections reverberate well beyond Canada's borders, making this volume an unrivalled resource for anyone interested in constitutional governance and democratic politics in diverse societies.

Book Synopsis Labour Goes to War by : Wendy Cuthbertson
Download or read book Labour Goes to War written by Wendy Cuthbertson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War, the Congress of Industrial Organizations in Canada grew from a handful of members to more than a quarter-million. What was it about the "good war" that brought about this phenomenal growth? Labour Goes to War argues that both economic and cultural forces were at work. Labour shortages gave workers greater economic power in the workplace. But cultural factors workers' patriotism, ties to those on active service, and allegiance to the "people's war" also fueled the CIO's growth. The complex, often contradictory, motives of workers during this period left the Canadian labour movement with an ambivalent progressive/conservative legacy.

Book Synopsis Canadian Forces in Afghanistan 3-Book Bundle by : Bernd Horn
Download or read book Canadian Forces in Afghanistan 3-Book Bundle written by Bernd Horn and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2016-02-27 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian Forces, including Special Operations Forces, have played an outsize role in the conflict in Afghanistan, often under a cloak of secrecy. For the first time, Col. Bernd Horn reveals the stories of the troops and operations behind Canada’s pivotal involvement in the Afghanistan conflict. No Ordinary Men Peels back the cloak of secrecy and reveals four untold special operations that Joint Task Force 2, an elite counterterrorist unit, conducted in 2005–06 in which their courage, tenacity, and impressive capabilities meant the difference between life and death. No Lack of Courage The story of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Operation Medusa, the largely Canadian action in Afghanistan from 1 to 17 September 2006, to dislodge a heavily entrenched Taliban force in the Pashmul district of Afghanistans Kandahar Province. No Easy Task Afghanistan has long been considered the graveyard of empires. Those who have ventured into Afghanistan with notions of controlling its people have soon discovered that fighting in that rugged, hostile land is no easy task. This collection of essays examines this legacy of conflict, particularly from a Canadian perspective.

Book Synopsis In Defence of Canada Volume II by : James Eayrs
Download or read book In Defence of Canada Volume II written by James Eayrs and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1965-01-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Defence of Canada: Appeasement and Rearmament is a companion and sequel to Eayrs' In Defence of Canada: From the Great War to the Great Depression (Toronto 1964). Like Volume I, Volume II rejects as outmoded and misleading the traditional division of national security policy into two compartments, one called foreign policy, the other, defence policy. Like Volume I, Volume II is meant to demonstrate that the military and diplomatic components of national security policy are, and ought to be, indissolubly combined, in study and analysis, as well as in formulation and execution. The emphasis in Volume II is mainly on the diplomatic: the tempo and importance of Canadian diplomacy steadily increase during the period with which it is concerned. That period opens with the Italian war aggression against Ethiopia in 1935. It closes in the late summer and early fall of 1940, as the twilight war becomes a total war.
