Book excerpt: It is commonly assumed that all Sikhs are the same, but the very existence of different groups who have varying beliefs and practices within the Sikh community shows that a corporate identity for the Sikh community is not possible and serves to alienate a substantial proportion of Sikhs from the overall fold of the Sikh faith. Introducing the beliefs and practices of a range of individual Sikh groups, this book addresses the issue of Sikh identity across the Sikh community as a whole but from the viewpoint of different types of Sikh. Examining the historical development of Sikhism from the period of Guru Nanak to the present day, the author takes an in-depth look at five groups in the Sikh community - the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha; the Namdharis; the Ravidasis; the Valmikis; and the Sikh Dharma of the Western hemisphere (associated with the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization - 3HO). Their history, beliefs and practices are explored, as well as their diverse and shared identities. Concluding that there is no authoritative yardstick with which to assess the issue of Sikh identity, the author highlights Sikhism's links to its Hindu past and suggests a federal Sikh identity with one or two fundamental beliefs at the core and individual groups left to express their own unique beliefs and practices.

The Chicano Movement was the largest civil rights and empowerment movement in the history of Mexican Americans in the United States. The movement was led by a new generation of political activists calling themselves Chicanos, a countercultural barrio term. This book is the story of three key activists, Raul Ruiz, Gloria Arellanes, and Rosalio Muanoz, who through oral history related their experiences as movement activist to historian Mario T. Garcaia. As first-person autobiographical narratives, these stories put a human face to this profound social movement and provide a life-story perspective as to why these individuals became activists"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black, Quare, and Then to Where jennifer susanne leath explores the relationship between Afrodiasporic theories of justice and Black sexual ethics through a womanist engagement with Maât the ancient Egyptian deity of justice and truth. Maât took into account the historical and cultural context of each human’s life, thus encompassing nuances of politics, race, gender, and sexuality. Arguing that Maât should serve as a foundation for reconfiguring Black sexual ethics, leath applies ancient Egyptian moral codes to quare ethics of the erotic, expanding what relationships and democratic practices might look like from a contemporary Maâtian perspective. She also draws on Pan-Africanism and examines the work of Alice Walker, E. Patrick Johnson, Cheikh Anta Diop, Sylvia Wynter, Sun Ra, and others. She shows that together, these thinkers and traditions inform and expand the possibilities of Maâtian justice with respect to Black sexual experiences. As a moral force, leath contends, Maât opens new possibilities for mapping ethical frameworks to understand, redefine, and imagine justices in the United States.

Ebone, a Pale woman who passes for a Black, finds herself embroiled in international intrigue as scientists and politicians wrestle for the precious cure to the deadly virus. Dean Campbell's mind-bending science-fiction tale of race relations is sure to shake up consciously and unconsciously held assumptions about politics, economics, and race.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1935, in this volume E.L. Woodward reconstructs with his usual painstaking industry the various phases of Anglo-German naval relations from the enactment of the German navy laws of 1898-1900 to the months of the apparent détente just before the outbreak of war in 1914. The principle documentary collections have been carefully consulted and the material drawn from them is woven into an extended account of negotiations which for several years kept London and Berlin preoccupied with comparative shipbuilding programmes, fleet ratios and political formulas. With excellent judgement the author skilfully sets his central theme against the background of concurrent developments in the realm of European diplomacy. Though the importance of the Navy as an international power is indubitably diminished at the moment, the matter of the actual strength of the Navy is still a matter of controversy. To some extent today we can say of this book as the reviewer in The Times Literary Supplement said on its first publication in 1935: "The circumstances of today in which naval competition has again begun may differ from those of thirty years ago; but those who read and digest this balanced and accurate account of that period will not fail to observe familiarities in the two situations."
