Book excerpt: This story poses a profound question - do we accept the hand that fate deals us, or do we battle to make the most of the life we have and help others in the process? Chris Graham, just 38 years old but already facing the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease, has emphatically chosen the latter. Having lived through a troubled childhood, Chris joined the British Army at a young age and found that the life of a soldier provided him with a much-needed sense of stability. However, his world was turned upside down when, at just 34 years of age, he was diagnosed with a form of early onset dementia. This brutal disease had already claimed the life of his father at 42, along with several other members of his family, and tragically had already confined his brother to a nursing home at the age of 43. In his brother's life, Chris could see a terrifying window into his own near future. Chris, though, is an extraordinary human being. Having been handed nothing less than a death sentence, he decided overnight to stand up to this horrendous disease and do something to leave his mark before it was too late. And so it was that last year, Chris embarked on an awareness-raising 16,000-mile solo cycle around North America, armed only with his bike, a sense of humour, and some good old-fashioned British grit. Leaving his ever-supportive wife Vicky and baby son Dexter at home, he took on huge challenges - for instance, the fear that the ability to discern left from right might leave him at any point while navigating an entire continent - and made it home in time for Christmas, determined to spending however long he has left pouring his love and attention into his family life. Five Minutes of Amazing is both the story of Chris' epic journey and of his fight against the disease increasingly being recognised as the defining disease of our generation. Inspiring and heart-rending in equal measure, it's as important as it is moving, and it will touch everyone who reads it.

Austin is the first of three Hicks children who embark on this globe-trotting tradition with their father. In the spirit of adventure, their route and activities are kept secret-even from family. They complete daily, self-imposed Journey Tasks that deliberately immerse them into cultural authenticity, and far outside their comfort zones. As the journey unfolds, it becomes clear that these travelers are in store for much more than unfamiliar landscapes. From foreign militaries to spiritual clairvoyance, from serious illness to unnerving dares, The Amazing Journey reminds us to connect with people-be it those closest to you or those across the world-to test your limits, and to trust the Journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorer and geographer Alastair Bonnett takes us on a thought-provoking tour of the world’s most fascinating islands, featuring hand-drawn maps, color photos, and stories from his travels. There are millions of islands on our planet. New islands are being built at an unprecedented rate, for tourism and territorial ambition. Many are also disappearing, besieged by rising sea levels. The story of our world’s islands is one of the great dramas of our time, and it is playing out around the planet—islands are sprouting or being submerged everywhere from the South China Sea to the Atlantic. Elsewhere is the story of this strange and mesmerizing planetary spectacle. In this book, explorer and geographer Alastair Bonnett takes us on a thought-provoking tour of the world’s most fascinating islands. He traveled the globe to provide a firsthand look at numerous islands, sketching a vivid likeness of each one he visited. From a “crannog,” an ancient artificial island in a Scottish loch, to the militarized artificial islands China is building; from the disappearing islands that remain the home of native Central Americans to the ritzy new islands of Dubai; from Hong Kong to the Isles of Scilly—all have compelling stories to tell. As we journey around the world with Bonnett, he addresses urgent contemporary issues such as climate change, economic inequality, and the changing balance of world power as reflected in the fates of islands. Along the way, we also learn about the many ways islands rise and fall, the long and little-known history of human island-building and the prospect that the inland hills and valleys will one day be archipelagos. Featuring Bonnett’s charming hand-drawn maps and 33 full-color photos, Elsewhere is a captivating travel book for any armchair adventurer.

Book excerpt: "A thrilling synthesis from a brilliant scientist who discovered one of the most important chapters in our history." —Sean B. Carroll Big History, the field that integrates traditional historical scholarship with scientific insights to study the full sweep of our universe, has so far been the domain of historians. Famed geologist Walter Alvarez—best known for the “Impact Theory” explaining dinosaur extinction—has instead championed a science-first approach to Big History. Here he wields his unique expertise to give us a new appreciation for the incredible occurrences—from the Big Bang to the formation of supercontinents, the dawn of the Bronze Age, and beyond—that have led to our improbable place in the universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sang Sun Lee was a refugee in South Korea during the Korean War. He fled North Korea, leaving behind his wife, children, and parents. During a narrow escape from death, he made a promise to God in exchange for his life. Lee was true to his promise for the rest of his life. From building churches to building a business, being a true servant of God guided all his decisions and actions. Lee eventually became a businessperson and went from poverty to wealth and back again as he gave generously, and sometimes naively, to those who asked him for help. He was instrumental in the planting of numerous churches over the years and supported pastors and missionaries unfailingly, often putting their needs ahead of those of his own family. Throughout this time, Lee’s steadfast faith in God carried him and his family through every challenge and setback. Later in life, Lee was interviewed of his experiences, and that was published in an eight-month weekly series in The Christian Times. His daughter, Dr. Stephanie Chung, gathered her father’s articles to share his story and honour his life.

Book excerpt: My Amazing Journey chronicles the life of the author, a woman born with Muscular Dystrophy. It is a series of vignettes detailing circumstances and situations in the life of Ms. Donna Lamberti. During the course of the manuscript, the author, however, does not describe the sadness of being a disabled child and never dwells on the disease as the cause of difficulties in her life. Instead, the book is incredibly uplifting and positive, while at the same time extremely honest. The story begins with childhood memories, including Ms. Lamberti's early education at the Crippled Children's Center, and goes on to describe how she overcame obstacles to pursue a Bachelor's degree and later a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. It continues to detail her career as a Leisure Counselor working with others with disabilities. There is even a bit of romance as the story progresses. My Amazing Journey touches upon Ms. Lamberti's contributions to the community, her accomplishments on the State level, and her participation in the Victory Awards in Washington, D.C. Finally, the manuscript concludes by describing her illness and how she overcame the odds with courage and strength. Even today she challenges herself and her world while using a stretcher for mobility and a ventilator to breathe.

You will discover how the love between Kathy and Gary was bonded by God's hand from the beginning and designed to withstand any storm or obstacle life could present. Inseparable from toddlers to teens, these two best friends had an unusual connection, realizing there was something special holding them together, although not actually knowing what it was until later in life. It all began with two nineteen-year-old girls becoming best friends from the first moment they met. These special ladies went on to start families of their own, and not only were the BFFS touched by instant love for each other, the gift was passed on. You will be totally drawn in, as if you are a part of this epic chronicle discovering that a number of so called coincidences are unmistakably divine intervention. Some might say that this story sounds like a magical fairy tale being made into a Hallmark movie, but that's not the intention of sharing it, you be the judge. Once separated as teens, Gary and Kathy didn't have any contact for forty-two years, not knowing what the other was doing. You will experience an array of emotions as they go from elation to deflation, mountain tops of joy to valleys of disappointment. Be prepared to laugh out loud and privately shed a tear as you experience their love and broken hearts. My father's name is Leonardo Marqueda and my mom is Christina Merca Marqueda. I was the second child in the family of twelve siblings. I received my degree of Christian Education at The Siliman University in Dumaguete City, Philippines in 1951. I became a pastor in several churches, but I mainly served as a pastor at The United Church of Christ in the Philippines since 1958-1970. My loving husband, Ben Gonzales and I, has been married since 1953, and we were married in Surigao City, Philippines. We have four children, Hannah, Dorothy, Lemuel, and Samuel. We all migrated to the United States in 1971. I taught Kindergarten for four years at The Southside Baptist Church in Covington Kentucky. Then, I became an associate pastor at The Chicago Temple Methodist church in Chicago, Illinois in 1975. While I was at the Chicago Temple, I became the pastor of the "Filipino Mabuhay Fellowship" congregation for three years. Thereafter, I became the chaplain at The Bethany Nursing Center in Niles, Illinois, from 1982 until 1987. And from 1988 to 1993 I served as a pastor at The Norwood Presbyterian Church in Chicago. I retired in June of 1993. Today, I am enjoying playing with my great granddaughter, Solei. She is two years old and her parents are Jamie and Stephanie. Hannah is married to Calib, and Dorothy is married to Ricky with Derick and Krystal as their kids. Lemuel's kids are Jamie, David, Christopher, and Elizabeth. During the Summertime, Ben and I are busy planting flowers and vegetables at our backyard. Presently, we all attend The Willow Creek Community Evangelical church at Hoffman Estates, Illinois every Sunday. We thank God for He has blessed us with a big family.
