Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Economic Life a General Social Science Throughout the centuries man has been progressing - more and more rapidly since the time of the Industrial Revolution. Large-scale production has given us powerful slaves in the form of machinery, but has made us almost completely dependent upon the machine, our life work and our means of enjoyment alike conditioned by its use. Division of labor has been the natural consequence of the establishment of the machine era, and as such division has grown more and more minute our dependence upon one another has become correspondingly greater. There are certain laws and forces continually at work in this complex life of ours, and many of us do not realize that they even exist. An American banker has said that the American people are "economic illiterates" - that we do not know the ABC's of the business world in which we live. Social problems resulting from our more complex lives are growing up more rapidly than we are able to solve them, while the corruption so often found in politics bears mute testimony to our ignorance of, or indifference to, those underlying political principles upon which all good government must be based. This book does not pretend to give a complete exposition of the economic, sociological, and political principles underlying our group life. But it does try to give a basis upon which the boys and girls may build a better understanding of such sciences from their own activities and from the information which they glean from books, magazines, and newspapers. Furthermore, it attempts to give them some standards by which they may evaluate the everyday occurrences of their everyday lives, and some appreciation of their share in the preservation and development of the group life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook in General Science and the Economics of Daily Life The hair, finger nails, and outer layers of the Skin are all destitute of blood vessels. Growth in them occurs only at their under surfaces and inner ends. The tendons and ligaments, too, get a scant supply of blood, and their repair is slow after accidents where a sprain has occurred, or when they have been torn from the bone. Either condition may be more serious than a broken bone, ' or the dislocation of bones at a joint. The finger nails serve to support and protect the ends of the fingers, and to enable a person to pick up small objects more readily. At all times they Should be kept neatly trimmed, and scrupulously clean. The fold of skin at the base of the nail should be kept pushed back instead of being cut Off. Food should never be handled with unwashed hands, nor the finger tips touched to the tongue. The hand is man's chief instrument for labor. He uses It for feeding and dressing himself. It is a weapon for self defense, and is a means for fashioning tools, implements, clothing, and for preparing his food. It is in almost constant use during man's waking hours, ministering to his needs and executing his desires. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Economist, Vol. 1 And here we reach the fundamental principle of our whole contention, namely, that economic science must be studied from the stand-point of the laboring classes, the demands of whose social life alone are large enough to furnish a basis sufficiently broad for the development of the future. Only their outlays can be large enough to call for that expansion of production which will make the prosperity of our coming civilization. And with that prosperity it will also be found that the masses have so advanced in general intelligence and strength of character that they have become the natural guardians of public integrity and political freedom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Foundations of Society Modern sociologists are still groping about for a point of departure from which to explain the complex of social phenomena. It was easier for the philosophers of the last century, for all were then agreed that Society was to be "rightly constituted by victorious Analysis." But Philosophism has had its day, and Positivism now reigns in the domain of social science. We no longer hope to reconstitute society upon a fabulous state of nature; we are seeking now to discover the natural laws of social evolution. On the one side there are the biological sociologists who would determine the principles of the new science by analogies drawn from the animal world. But it is not enough merely to substitute super-organic for organic evolution, and proceed at once to confer biological definitions upon sociological facts. True, the terminology of the science is thereby enriched and its methods somewhat improved; but the principles peculiar to social growth still remain to be discovered. There is also a group of psychological sociologists who seek the motives of collective life in the individual instincts of the man. But personal proclivities are so largely the result of historical inheritance and the social environment, that there is constant danger in pursuing this method of confusing cause with consequence, and thus becoming involved in a vicious circle. It is difficult, besides, without some guiding principle, to hit upon instincts that are especially characteristic of the human species, and at the same time sufficiently original and universal to apply to all social phenomena. Each question can be fully and satisfactorily answered, and every problem can be correctly solved by reference to the previous conclusions reached, to the explanatory material that precedes certain of the questions and problems, and to the hints that are inserted here and there to aid in the reasoning process. For those who desire more extensive reading, page references to commonly used elementary and advanced text books will be found at the end Of each chapter. Certain specialized works, as well as a selection of those Of a more popular nature, have also been listed. NO attempt has been made to treat purely technical matters or to discuss fine distinctions having only a highly theoretical significance. The aim has been, rather, to help the student see a meaning in commonplace things, to teach and stimulate him to reason, and to guide him towards a series of conclusions embodying those fundamental facts concerning our economic life that every citizen Should know and understand. For this purpose, newspaper clippings seem particularly pertinent and have been used extensively as case material. Although drawn exclusively from papers published in New York City and vicinity, these items are typical of economic news published constantly throughout the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problem: Life and Work Tms volume is designed to be an informal introduction to the science and art of social progress. It does not profess to furnish any sufficient outline of sociology or politics, but seeks to ask and answer certain preliminary questions which confront thinking men and women who are interested in work of social reform, and wish to reach satisfactory intelligible principles for their guidance in such work. Its primary object is to enforce the recognition of the organic unity of the problem of social progress by showing the interactions of the many concrete questions and movements which divide the attention of social reformers. Book excerpt: Recently, social science has had numerous episodes of influential research that was found invalid when placed under rigorous scrutiny. The growing sense that many published results are potentially erroneous has made those conducting social science research more determined to ensure the underlying research is sound. Transparent and Reproducible Social Science Research is the first book to summarize and synthesize new approaches to combat false positives and non-reproducible findings in social science research, document the underlying problems in research practices, and teach a new generation of students and scholars how to overcome them. Understanding that social science research has real consequences for individuals when used by professionals in public policy, health, law enforcement, and other fields, the book crystallizes new insights, practices, and methods that help ensure greater research transparency, openness, and reproducibility. Readers are guided through well-known problems and are encouraged to work through new solutions and practices to improve the openness of their research. Created with both experienced and novice researchers in mind, Transparent and Reproducible Social Science Research serves as an indispensable resource for the production of high quality social science research.
