Book excerpt: The phenomenon of national identities, always a key issue in the modern history of Bohemian Jewry, was particularly complex because of the marginal differences that existed between the available choices. Considerable overlap was evident in the programs of the various national movements and it was possible to change one's national identity or even to opt for more than one such identity without necessarily experiencing any far-reaching consequences in everyday life. Based on many hitherto unknown archival sources from the Czech Republic, Israel and Austria, the author's research reveals the inner dynamic of each of the national movements and maps out the three most important constructions of national identity within Bohemian Jewry - the German-Jewish, the Czech-Jewish and the Zionist. This book provides a needed framework for understanding the rich history of German- and Czech-Jewish politics and culture in Bohemia and is a notable contribution to the historiography of Bohemian, Czechoslovak and central European Jewry.

Book excerpt: This valuable resource book was written by Dr. Jan Habenicht of Chicago and published by the Hlas Publishing company of St. Louis in 1910. The research of Dr. Habenicht included extensive travel across the entire United States and writing thousands of letters. It was translated into English by Miroslav Koudelka, a member of CGSI, and edited and arranged by Paul M. Makousky, Publication Chair of CGSI. The book has 595 pages (8 1/2" x 11"), is bound by a hardcover and features a beautifully finished metallic blue and white jacket containing a photograph of the Dvorak family in the raspberry field in Minnetonka Township, Minnesota on the front and the Vasko family on their farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin on the back. Additions to the book include an index to the illustrations (276 of them), a foreword to the English edition by Paul M. Makousky, a list of the Czech fraternal organizations (appendix II), maps of the 14 states with the largest Czech populations (appendix I), a complete surname index (over 2,400 names), a geographical name index, and a biography of the author. Even if you don't find your family name(s) in this book, it is very valuable in describing the living conditions and experiences of our Czech forbearers from the mid 1800's to 1910. This book provides the most extensive description of Czech life; in religion, among fraternal organizations, in the press, in theater, and in the struggle for maintaining the Czech heritage versus becoming part of the American melting pot. An index listing all surnames in History of Czechs in America was added as a feature to the English edition.

Book excerpt: In 1980, the University of Oklahoma Press published a ten-book series titled Newcomers to a New Land that described and analyzed the role of the major ethnic groups that have contributed to the history of Oklahoma. The series was part of Oklahoma Image, a project sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and the Oklahoma Library Association and made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In response to numerous requests, the University of Oklahoma Press has reissued all ten volumes in the series. Published unaltered from the original editions, these books continue to have both historical and cultural value for reasons the series editorial committee stated so well: "Though not large in number as compared to those in some other states, immigrants from various European nations left a marked impact on Oklahoma's history. As in the larger United States, they worked in many economic and social roles that enriched the state's life. Indians have played a crucial part in Oklahoma's history, even to giving the state her name. Blacks and Mexicans have also fulfilled a special set of roles, and will continue to affect Oklahoma's future. The history of each of these groups is unique, well worth remembering to both their heirs and to other people in the state and nation. Their stories come from the past, but continue on to the future." Editorial Committee H. Wayne Morgan, Chair University of Oklahoma Douglas Hale Oklahoma State University Rennard Strickland University of Tulsa

Book excerpt: Shifting Sands is a collection of short stories where heroes and heroines shift their destinies like sand shifts in time, grain by grain, often to the surprise of the reader. They try to break away from the conformity of their lives and relationships as they struggle to find themselves. Sometimes, they pass narrowly through the intricate web of vices. They come out transformed, vindicated, victorious or condemned. The 13 stories in the Shifting Sands Short Stories are divided into three circles thematically and chronologically. The first circle draws on the early immigration experience from the old country Czechoslovakia to the New World America. The characters embody the impermanence of their status as they struggle between the old culture, language and the adaptation and assimilation to the new world in North America. This is expressed in Danillo, Honey Azrael and the Temptation of Martin Duggan. The second circle of short stories is about assimilation into the new culture while working at the Midwest retail chain. This is demonstrated in Tonight on Main, Therese's Mind, Boxcutter Amy, Orange Nights and the Death Song. The third circle of stories draws on newspaper and media experience fueled by the growing passion for writing. These stories include Foxy, Iron Horse, In the Shadows, Riddleyville Clowns and Chatamal.Based on the story Riddleyville Clowns, I wrote the screenplay titled Riddleyville Clowns. Both demonstrate the hardiness of hometown characters from Main Street America and beyond.Excerpts from the short stories can be found on EW Emma's Writings and on Edition Emma Publishing blogs.
