Excerpt: ... story-- was added to the building in 1881 at a cost of $1,300. All the teachers are colored, three of them having been students in Nashville, and one, Prof. C. S. Dinkins, a graduate of Newton Theological Seminary. The courses of study are academic, normal, and theological. In the latter course some of the professors in the Southern Theological Seminary, as well as pastors in the city, have given lectures to the students. The capacity of the building is wholly inadequate to the demands. The colored people of Kentucky, under the energetic leadership of President Simmons, deserve much praise for what they have done, and speedy success in their undertaking. There are about 275,000 colored people in Kentucky. XII.--BISHOP BAPTIST COLLEGE. Marshall, Texas. The need of a school for the colored people of the Southwest, beyond the Mississippi, had been appreciated for many years prior to 1880, and had engaged the thoughts of Dr. Nathan Bishop, who said to a friend not long before his deatl1 in 1880, "I have $10,000 to put into a school in Texas, when the time has come." This was the inspiration of the movement to establish such an institution, although no positive gift was left for this purpose. In the summer of 1880, Dr. S. W. Marston, superintendent of missions for the freedmen, made a tour of observation with special reference to the location of a school. With the concurrence of the Texas and Louisiana Association, held in August, 1880, it was decided to locate the school at Marshall, Texas. The "Holcombe property," a beautiful site, with a mansion and smaller buildings in the midst of a grove and ten acres of land, was purchased for $2,500. The colored people contrib uted liberally toward the purchase of the property, and at the Texas State...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical History of Primitive or Old School Baptist Ministers of the United States: Including a Brief Treatise on the Subject of Deacons, Their Duties, Etc., With Some Personal Mention of These Officers; Brief Sketches of a Few of Our Talented and Spiritually-Minded Sisters and "Mothers in Israel" When the legal dispensation with its types and shadows, its tabernacle and temple ceremonies, had served the purpose for which God had ordained them, viz, for the teaching and leading and pointing His chosen people to Jesus as the anti-type of all types - the substance of all shadows, it was then that old things under the law-passed away, and all things - under the gospel - became new. The Law being fulfilled in Christ its ceremonies were abolished and its shadows became more defined as the Son of Righteousness arose with healing in His wing, and in their place was established the church with its simple, spiritual worship. And among the gifts our Divine Saviour obtained for His church when He ascended on high, and which are to be perpetuated till the completion of her members and the perfect unity of the body, is that of faithful pastors. Book excerpt: Ministry professional Allan Taylor writes to all church leaders about the crucial role that Sunday School must play in producing healthy Christians who in turn produce healthy churches. He emphasizes the value of the Sunday School model to the total church ministry for its superior ability to nurture relationships and more personally stir passion for the Great Commission across every age group. Taylor presents the sharply focused idea that all Sunday School programs are either imploding (through directionless ineffectiveness) or exploding (thanks to visionary leadership and practicing some fundamental disciplines). As such, he guides the reader toward growth principles that must be operative for any church to begin or continue a transformational Sunday School boom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist and pastor Mark Wingfield describes how the congregation he serves undertook a detailed study of how the church should respond to the inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender members. The study was conducted by a nineteen-member blue-ribbon task force that included wide representation of the church's various constituencies. The author served as a staff liaison, recording secretary, and resource to the study group, keeping meticulous notes of the process and the aftermath of the study. Why Churches Need to Talk about Sexuality is written for clergy and lay leaders in Protestant congregations of all kinds who need a helpful guide to conversations about human sexuality within congregations. The book also has in mind anyone who wants to understand the controversial debates about human sexuality and the Christian church today and who desire to follow a process to discuss the topic and make decisions about how congregations and individuals will respond to matters of ministry and sexuality. This book not only details the process used at Wilshire but also tells the human story of why the study was undertaken and what happened to the lives and faith of real people inside and outside the church. The author's hope is to provide a resource to other clergy and church leaders to understand why this issue must be addressed, how difficult it is to address, and what to expect along the way. As the title indicates, even though this is a difficult conversation to have, churches must have the conversation anyway.

Book excerpt: More teens are turning away from the faith than ever before: it is estimated that 75 to 88% of Christian teens walk away from Christianity by the end of their freshman year of college. Something must be done. Family Driven Faith equips Christian parents with the tools they need to raise children biblically in a post-Christian, anti-family society. Voddie Baucham, who with his wife has overcome a multi-generational legacy of broken and dysfunctional homes, shows that God has not left us alone in raising godly children. He has given us timeless precepts and principles for multi-generational faithfulness, especially in Deuteronomy 6. God's simple command to Moses to teach the Word diligently to the children of Israel serves as the foundation of Family Driven Faith. - Publisher.

Giving us an overview of the social, economic, and spiritual challenges that our boys face, White gives practical tips on how we can break these chains and set them free. This is a must read for churches who are serious about ministering to our boys! - Rev. Dr. James Perkins Pastor Greater Christ Baptist Church, Detroit Michigan President Progressive National Baptist Convention My Brothers Keeper is an excellent guide for mentoring our young people in general and our young men in particular. A readable and helpful book. I highly recommend it to anyone concerned about how to reach this generation.- Rev. Dr. Kevin Turman Pastor Second Baptist Church, Detroit Michigan My Brothers Keeper is a must read for all who sincerely want every young person, especially at-risk young men reach their God-given potential.- Rev. Lawerence T. Foster Pastor The Calvary Baptist Church, Detroit Michigan My Brothers Keeper is a training manual for clergy, laity, parents, teachers, social workers, youth workers, guidance counselors and caring persons who want to develop a Mentoring Program, Rites of Passage, Conflict Resolution Classes, Liberation Lessons and use Rap music to free young, African American males from their spiritual, social, and psychological bondage. Moreover, these ministries will raise their self-esteem, fulfill their paternal deprivation, help them manage their anger, instruct them to be peacemakers, develop their moral consciousness and save their souls. If you are tired of watching our young men wearing sagging pants, rapping with profanity, using the n word, dropping out of school, getting high, selling drugs, having children out of wedlock, terrorizing our neighborhood, going to jail, killing one another, then this book is for you. This book will not only tell you what happened to our boys but what you can do about it. For too long we have rejected, ignored, or demonized black boys and asked, Am I my brothers keeper? It is time for Christians and people of good will to acknowledge the fact that we are our brothers keeper and do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. It is time for us to heed the words of Jesus, preach good tidings unto the poor; heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, and let the oppressed go free.
