Book Synopsis Come from Away by : Genevieve Graham
Download or read book Come from Away written by Genevieve Graham and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Tides of Honour and Promises to Keep comes a poignant novel about a young couple caught on opposite sides of the Second World War. In the fall of 1939, Grace Baker’s three brothers, sharp and proud in their uniforms, board Canadian ships headed for a faraway war. Grace stays behind, tending to the homefront and the general store that helps keep her small Nova Scotian community running. The war, everyone says, will be over before it starts. But three years later, the fighting rages on and rumours swirl about “wolf packs” of German U-Boats lurking in the deep waters along the shores of East Jeddore, a stone’s throw from Grace’s window. As the harsh realities of war come closer to home, Grace buries herself in her work at the store. Then, one day, a handsome stranger ventures into the store. He claims to be a trapper come from away, and as Grace gets to know him, she becomes enamoured by his gentle smile and thoughtful ways. But after several weeks, she discovers that Rudi, her mysterious visitor, is not the lonely outsider he appears to be. He is someone else entirely—someone not to be trusted. When a shocking truth about her family forces Grace to question everything she has so strongly believed, she realizes that she and Rudi have more in common than she had thought. And if Grace is to have a chance at love, she must not only choose a side, but take a stand. Come from Away is a mesmerizing story of love, shifting allegiances, and second chances, set against the tumultuous years of the Second World War.

Book Synopsis Public Memory, Race, and Heritage Tourism of Early America by : Cathy Rex
Download or read book Public Memory, Race, and Heritage Tourism of Early America written by Cathy Rex and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the interconnected issues of public memory, race, and heritage tourism, exploring the ways in which historical tourism shapes collective understandings of America’s earliest engagements with race. It includes contributions from a diverse group of humanities scholars, including early Americanists, and scholars from communication, English, museum studies, historic preservation, art and architecture, Native American studies, and history. Through eight chapters, the collection offers varied perspectives and original analyses of memory-making and re-making through travel to early American sites, bringing needed attention to the considerable role that tourism plays in producing—and possibly unsettling—racialized memories about America’s past. The book is an interdisciplinary effort that analyses lesser-known sites of historical and racial significance throughout North America and the Caribbean (up to about 1830) to unpack the relationship between leisure travel, processes of collective remembering or forgetting, and the connections of tourist sites to colonialism, slavery, genocide, and oppression. Public Memory, Race, and Heritage Tourism of Early America provides a deconstruction of the touristic experience with racism, slavery, and the Indigenous experience in America that will appeal to students and academics in the social sciences and humanities.
Book Synopsis The Anonymous North American Tour of Franz Liszt by : Julian Livingston
Download or read book The Anonymous North American Tour of Franz Liszt written by Julian Livingston and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 1999-12-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: P. T. Barnum's agent, Henry Feder, offers pianist Franz Liszt three hundred thousand dollars to give a concert tour of North America, but for puzzling reasons Liszt vacillates. He eventually travels incognito to North America in October of 1856 with his manservant, Henrik, and agent Feder, where it becomes obvious that a very fine tour can be accomplished along the western rivers by steamboat. As Liszt prepares to start his tour, he encounters amazingly violent resistance in the company of famous people such as the brilliant, but bizarre pianist, Alkan, and the beloved composer, Stephen Foster. Liszt further is distracted by a young lady of supernatural accomplishments, Elizabeth Marvel, a gypsy witch. A masked Liszt finally performs in Cincinnati, but just as they are about to tear off the mask and announce the tour, Liszt and Elizabeth are kidnaped by unknown opposition and rushed down-river. Liszt is tried by a ghostly kangaroo court in Cairo, Illinois for composing his distressingly new music, and neither Henry Feder nor the talents of Henrik can extricate them from the outrageous death sentence to be carried out by the voodoo queen, Marie Laveau. Ultimately, the magical methods of Elizabeth Marvel overcome the voodooien, but Liszt cancels the tour anyway. Feder reveals why Liszt was satisfied, and why Liszt gladly pays Barnum five hundred thousand dollars to make up for the failure. What to do about the appealing Elizabeth is the main problem since Liszt already has a princess in his life. Real people, places, and events abound in this story, but, as with many historical novels, the precise events of the story never happened. However, the real characters, given fictional words and actions within the story, are not intended to act in any way deleterious to their actual fame.
Book Synopsis The American Road Trip and American Political Thought by : Susan McWilliams Barndt
Download or read book The American Road Trip and American Political Thought written by Susan McWilliams Barndt and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans love road trips. They love to go on road trips. They love to read about road trips. They love to watch road trip stories unfold on television and film. Road trip stories are a consistent feature of the American landscape, a central part of American mythology, and an important piece of the American dream. In The American Road Trip and American Political Thought, Susan McWilliams argues that the American fascination with road trip stories is about more than mere escapism or wanderlust. She shows, in walking through stories like On the Road and The Grapes of Wrath, that American road trip stories are a key expression of American political thought. They are not just stories of personal journeys. They are stories of the American nation. McWilliams Barndt shows how Americans have long used road trip stories to raise and explore central questions about American politics in theory and practice. They talk about freedom and equality and diversity and take those vaunted American ideals for a test drive. American road trip stories are where the rubber meets the road in American political thought. The American Road Trip and American Political Thought includes explorations of a wide variety of American authors, from Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau to Erika Lopez and Cheryl Strayed, from Mark Twain and John Steinbeck to Solomon Northup and Hunter S. Thompson. It covers topics including gender, labor, place, race, and technology in American political life. This is a book that will change the way you think about the great American road trip and the great American story.
