Book excerpt: Casey Station, 1981 was a unique year for all the expeditioners who served there for the 12 months in such an inhospitable, isolated, frozen, and barren environment found only in Antarctica. A special bond was formed within this year between the expeditioners, and every 5 years since return to the Australian mainland, there is a reunion in one of the Australian capital cities. A midwinter's dinner and the following day, relaxing and chatting late into the night about our adventurous times at Casey. Unique also is the fact that four of our expeditioners from Casey 1981 received the Australian Antarctic Medal and one received the distinguished Phillip Law Medal, for their bravery and services to Australia. I have produced this book to record some of our real-life stories, for the courageous and dependable expeditioners I wintered with, for their families and their future generations, and for those interested in the contributions of our Australian Antarctic Expeditioners. It is also intended as a reference book for this era of Antarctic life at the four Australian Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic Research Stations (Macquarie Island, Casey, Mawson, and Davis), as this era is now recorded for future generations.

Book excerpt: Discover the exhilarating true story of Ernest Shackleton's legendary Antarctic expedition Told through the words of the world's greatest living explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes - one of the only men to understand his experience first-hand . . . 'For anyone with a passion for polar exploration, this is a must read' NEW YORK TIMES 'THE definitive book on Shackleton and no one could have done it better . . . an authentic account by one of the few men who truly knows what it's like to challenge Antarctica' LORRAINE KELLY _________ In 1915, Sir Ernest Shackleton's attempt to be the first to traverse the Antarctic was cut short when his ship, Endurance, became trapped in ice. He and his crew should have died. Instead, through a long, dark winter, Shackleton fought back: enduring sub-zero temperatures, a perilous lifeboat journey across icy seas, and a murderous march over glaciers to seek help. Shackleton's epic trek is one of history's most enthralling adventures. But who was he? How did previous Antarctic expeditions and his rivalry with Captain Scott forge him? And what happened afterwards to the man many believed was invincible? In this astonishing account, Fiennes brings the story vividly to life in a book that is part celebration, part vindication and all adventure. _________ 'Fiennes makes a fine guide on voyage into Shackleton's world . . . What makes this book so engaging is the author's own storytelling skills' Irish Independent 'Fiennes relates these tales of exploration and survival, adding insight to Shackleton's journeys unlike any other biographer' Radio Times Praise for Sir Ranulph Fiennes: 'The World's Greatest Living Explorer' Guinness Book of Records 'Full of awe-inspiring details of hardship, resolve and weather that defies belief, told by someone of unique authority. No one is more tailor-made to tell [this] story than Sir Ranulph Fiennes' Newsday 'Fiennes' own experiences certainly allow him to write vividly and with empathy of the hell that the men went through' Sunday Times 'Fiennes brings the promised perspective of one who has been there, illuminating Shackleton's actions by comparing them with his own. Beginners to the Heroic Age will enjoy this volume, as will serious polar adventurers seeking advice. For all readers, it's a tremendous story' Sara Wheeler, The Wall Street Journal

Book Synopsis Adventures In Antarctica by : Suravi Thomas
Download or read book Adventures In Antarctica written by Suravi Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the best Christmas gift two children could get - an expedition to Antarctica, the mysterious White Continent When Suravi and Rishi Thomas got a place on a Chilean navy ship sailing to Antarctica, they couldn't have imagined the stormy time that lay ahead. Four-storey-high waves battered the decks, ferocious winds sharp as ice blades lashed out, hulky icebergs came crashing in until their ship began to teeter like a paper boat in rain. There was only one thing for the brother-sister duo to do - hold on to their bunks for dear life. It has never been smooth sailing to Antarctica - the coldest and windiest continent on earth - for even the most intrepid explorers. The dangers have never stopped the brave ones, though. And as their ship scissored its way through sea and ice, Suravi and Rishi became fearless discoverers, driven by a passion for penguins and spellbound by Antarctica's many extraordinary sights: gigantic blue icebergs, playful pods of whales, legendary albatrosses, rainbow skies at midnight and vast carpets of thick ice.
Book Synopsis Of Maps and Men by : John G. Weihaupt
Download or read book Of Maps and Men written by John G. Weihaupt and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story begins with Dr. Weihaupt's explorations in the deep unexplored interior of Antarctica and the questions they inspired. Today we have a good understanding of the nature of our planet and its human history, yet there are inevitably more questions about who and what we are than there are answers. We know so little about our human past. When we get them, the answers are astonishing. The Ice Ages call into question far more recent history, the world of splendid ships, hearty mariners, intrepid explorers, breathtaking courage, and imaginative cartographers. What we witness in this book is the examinations of glaciers and ice sheets that lead to fascinating mysteries of human Medieval and Renaissance times. These mysteries include the discovery of Antarctica. The first to sight that continent, as recorded in history books, were scruffy whalers of colorful lore. However, there is another side to this story hidden deep in the Ice Age scientific record. Ancient maps are at the heart of this inquiry. If you enjoy maps, you will enjoy the adventure that unfolds. If not, your time is better spent in less adventurous pursuits. If you read this book, you will find that rarely do nature and history converge to reveal glimpses not only of the secrets of the snows, but of our unknown historic past. Nor are all of the mysteries solved; we are left still wondering, still blessed with the gift of the unknown. There are deep mysteries wafting in the breezes of both polar ice and mind. Readers will revisit the rich history of early explorations and follow in the footsteps of the adventurers of our historic past. Seldom do science and history so ably complement each other.

Download or read book Antarctica's Lost Aviator written by Jeff Maynard and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the 1930s, no one had yet crossed Antarctica, and its vast interior remained a mystery frozen in time. Hoping to write his name in the history books, wealthy American Lincoln Ellsworth announced he would fly across the unexplored continent. The main obstacles to Ellsworth’s ambition were numerous: he didn’t like the cold, he avoided physical work, and he couldn’t navigate. Consequently, he hired the experienced Australian explorer, Sir Hubert Wilkins, to organize the expedition on his behalf. While Ellsworth battled depression and struggled to conceal his homosexuality, Wilkins purchased a ship, hired a crew, and ordered a revolutionary new airplane constructed. The Ellsworth Trans-Antarctic Expeditions became epics of misadventure, as competitors plotted to beat Ellsworth, crews mutinied, and the ship was repeatedly trapped in the ice. A few hours after taking off in 1935, radio contact with Ellsworth was lost and the world gave him up for dead. Antarctica’s Lost Aviator brings alive one of the strangest episodes in polar history, using previously unpublished diaries, correspondence, photographs, and film to reveal the amazing true story of the first crossing of Antarctica and how, against all odds, it was achieved by the unlikeliest of heroes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this middle grade historical adventure, a dog travels through time to take part in a voyage from New Zealand to the South Pole. Ranger, the time-traveling golden retriever with search-and-rescue training, joins an early twentieth-century expedition journeying from New Zealand to Antarctica. He befriends Jack Nin, the stowaway turned cabin boy of Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s ship. They’re racing against a rival explorer to reach the South Pole, but with unstable ice, killer whales, and raging blizzards, the journey turns into a race against time . . . and a struggle to stay alive. Praise for the first book in the Ranger in Time series: “This excellent story contains historical details, full-page illustrations, and enough action to keep even reluctant readers engaged.” —School Library Journal “The third-person narration expertly balances Ranger’s thoughts between the appropriately doglike (squirrels! bacon!) and the heroic (Ranger’s drive to find and protect).” —Kirkus Reviews “McMorris’s richly rendered illustrations heighten the plot’s many moments of danger and drama, and Messner incorporates a wealth of historical details into her rousing adventure story.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other continent on Earth has undergone such radical environmental changes as Antarctica. In its transition from rich biodiversity to the barren, cold land of blizzards we see today, Antarctica provides a dramatic case study of how subtle changes in continental positioning can affect living communities, and how rapidly catastrophic changes can come about. Antarctica has gone from paradise to polar ice in just a few million years, a geological blink of an eye when we consider the real age of Earth. Frozen in Time presents a comprehensive overview of the fossil record of Antarctica framed within its changing environmental settings, providing a window into a past time and environment on the continent. It reconstructs Antarctica’s evolving animal and plant communities as accurately as the fossil record permits. The story of how fossils were first discovered in Antarctica is a triumph of human endeavour. It continues today with modern expeditions going out to remote sites every year to fill in more of the missing parts of the continent’s great jigsaw of life.
