This book was released on 2005 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optics of the electron beam accelerated in the Pelletron, intended for the electron cooling of 8.9 GeV antiprotons in the Fermilab recycler storage ring, has been studied. The beam profile parameters were measured under the accelerating section using Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) monitor. The monitor employs a highly-reflective 2 inch-diameter aluminum OTR-screen with a thickness of 5 {micro}m and a digital CCD camera. The measurements were done in a pulse-signal mode in the beam current range of 0.03-0.8 A and at pulse durations ranging from 1 {micro}s to 4 {micro}s. Differential profiles measured in pulsed mode are compared with results obtained by modeling of the DC beam dynamics from the Pelletron cathode to the OTR monitor. The modeling was done with SAM, ULTRASAM and BEAM programs. An adjustment of the magnetic fields in the lenses of the accelerating section was done in the simulations. The simulated electron beam optics downstream of the accelerating section was in good agreement with the measurements made with pulsed beam.

Book Synopsis Optics of Electron Beam in the Recycler by : A. Warner
Download or read book Optics of Electron Beam in the Recycler written by A. Warner and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron cooling of 8.9 GeV/c antiprotons in the Recycler ring (Fermilab) requires high current and good quality of the DC electron beam. Electron trajectories of {approx}0.2 A or higher DC electron beam have to be parallel in the cooling section, within {approx}0.2 mrad, making the beam envelope cylindrical. These requirements yielded a specific scheme of the electron transport from a gun to the cooling section, with electrostatic acceleration and deceleration in the Pelletron. Recuperation of the DC beam limits beam losses at as tiny level as {approx}0.001%, setting strict requirements on the return electron line to the Pelletron and a collector. To smooth the beam envelope in the cooling section, it has to be linear and known at the transport start. Also, strength of the relevant optic elements has to be measured with good accuracy. Beam-based optic measurements are being carried out and analyzed to get this information. They include beam simulations in the Pelletron, differential optic (beam response) measurements and simulation, beam profile measurements with optical transition radiation, envelope measurements and analysis with orifice scrapers. Current results for the first half-year of commissioning are presented. Although electron cooling is already routinely used for pbar stacking, its efficiency is expected to be improved.

Book excerpt: The potential for characterization of electron beams at (approximately)100 MeV at the Boeing Free-Electron Laser (FEL) facility by optical transition radiation (OTR) techniques has been demonstrated as an important complement to other diagnostic means. Electron beam properties such as spatial profile and position, current intensity, emittance, and energy were made accessible in an on-line manner. Initial examples including transport through the 5-m wiggler and the resolution of Cerenkov radiation and spontaneous emission radiation competitive sources are discussed. 11 refs., 13 figs.

Download or read book Optical Transition Radiation Measurements for the Los Alamos and Boeing Free-Electron Laser Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical transition radiation (OTR) measurements of the electron-beam emittance have been performed at a location just before the wiggler in the Los Alamos Free-Electron Laser (FEL) experiment. Beam profiles and beam divergence patterns from a single macropulse were recorded simultaneously using two intensified charge-injection device (CID) television cameras and an optical beamsplitter. Both single-foil OTR and two-foil OTR interference experiments were performed. Preliminary results are compared to a reference variable quadrupole, single screen technique. New aspects of using OTR properties for pointing the e-beam on the FEL oscillator axis, as well as measuring e-beam emittance are addressed. 7 refs., 9 figs.
Book Synopsis Use of an Electron Beam for Stochastic Cooling by :
Download or read book Use of an Electron Beam for Stochastic Cooling written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microwave instability of an electron beam can be used for a multiple increase in the collective response for the perturbation caused by a particle of a co-moving ion beam, i.e. for enhancement of friction force in electron cooling method. The low scale (hundreds GHz and higher frequency range) space charge or FEL type instabilities can be produced (depending on conditions) by introducing an alternating magnetic fields along the electron beam path. Beams' optics and noise conditioning for obtaining a maximal cooling effect and related limitations will be discussed. The method promises to increase by a few orders of magnitude the cooling rate for heavy particle beams with a large emittance for a wide energy range with respect to either electron and conventional stochastic cooling.
Book Synopsis Measurement of Electron Beam Emittance Using Optical Transition Radiation and Development of a Diffuse Screen Electron Beam Monitor by : Carlton B. Reid
Download or read book Measurement of Electron Beam Emittance Using Optical Transition Radiation and Development of a Diffuse Screen Electron Beam Monitor written by Carlton B. Reid and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental technique for measuring electron beam emittance using Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) with the Wartski Interferometer Method has been applied to the Naval Postgraduate School linear electron accelerator. Data for obtaining the emittance of the NPS linac has been collected. A chronology of the procedure for using OTR as a beam diagnostic at the NPS Linac is described in detail. A novel OTR beam monitor consisting of a surface purposely made diffuse was also developed and proved to be an excellent profile monitor. It can be used to measure the shape of the electron beam incident on a vacuum/metal interface over a viewing angle range of +/-30 degrees. Beam current and profile measurements using the diffuse screen were compared with measurements using a front surface mirror and a fluorescent screen. The diffuse screen demonstrated a linear response to current while the fluorescent screen showed an exponential response. The OTR produced the beam incident on the diffuse screen and accurately reflected the shape of the electron beam while the secondary electron effects of the fluorescent screen distorted the image.
Book Synopsis Establishment of a Capability to Measure Optical Transition Radiation by : Peter Karl Dallman
Download or read book Establishment of a Capability to Measure Optical Transition Radiation written by Peter Karl Dallman and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical transition radiation (OTR) can be used as a beam diagnostic system for charged particle beams. The experimental setup developed here demonstrates the capability to observe and measure OTR due to an electron beam from a linear accelerator. The setup is compact, simple, and readily adapted to experimental work. Through the use of two software programs (QuickCapture and Image 1.14) and the QuickCapture frame grabber board, both qualitative and quantitative results are possible. One of the useful qualitative results is a three-dimensional beam profile, which is quickly produced from a captured image. The system measured the relative intensity with a 3% variation between several images of the same source. Angular measurements of OTR can be made with an angular resolution of 600 microradians. Keywords: Optical transition radiation; Charged particle beams; Theses; Beam profiling. (jhd).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fermilab Electron Cooling Project requires a straight trajectory and constant beam size to provide maximum cooling of the antiprotons in the Recycler. A measurement system was developed using movable apertures and steering bumps to measure the beam size in a 20m long, nearly continuous, solenoid. This paper will focus on results of these measurements of the beam size and the difficulties in making those measurements.

Download or read book Further Time-resolved Electron-beam Characterizations with Optical Transition Radiation written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-resolved characterizations of electron beams using optical transition radiation (OTR) as a prompt conversion mechanism have recently been extended on the Los Alamos Free-electron Laser (FEL) facility 40-MeV linac. Two key timescales for rf-linac driven FELs are the micropulse (10 ps) and the macropulse (5 [mu]s to 1 ms). In the past we have used gated, intensified cameras to select a single or few micropulses (25 to 400 ns gate width) out of the pulse train to evaluate submacropulse effects. Recently, we have obtained some of the first measurements of micropulse bunch length (7 to 10 ps) and submacropulse spatialposition and profile using OTR and a Hamamatsu streak camera. Additionally, micropulse elongation effects and head-to-tail transverse kick effects are reported as a function of charge.
