The transition into a caregiver position without even having the option of applying for it. The emotions that ran high and the weight of it all on a young family. A therapeutic outlet of daily journaling turned into a voice of validation. This book was wrote in hopes that anyone else that finds themselves in a dark season in their journey of life that can not find the words to express their feelings and concerns can connect with the similarities of my journey and have validation of their feelings and thoughts. I have expressed the bumps and hardships on our journey as well as the blessings. I dug deep and searched for a daily practice that would serve me and those around me to offer hope and strength to conquer the day ahead. No one is immune to having human experiences. I have offered quotes and lyrics that helped me get through the toughest of times. I hope it helps you too.

Four years out of the life of an average American who did his time in service, only to find that he has to start over again in a country still at war and with a shattered economy. He finds that there is a way to make a living, and that is in the military-industrial complex, the new job market that had arisen when the Twin Towers fell on 9/11. In this world, he makes ends meet. He is able to support his family but is in the crosshairs of the enemy 24/7. All it takes is one mortar shell, one rocket strike, and one bullet to meet his fate. Although he is out of active military service, he is in a combat zone. His life is in danger, just like theirs, but for him, there are no welcome home parties and no yellow ribbons. Before, he was looked at as a hero; now, hes just an opportunist, a mercenary. But on this side, you see the way things are in this new world of outsourced war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something was wrong--very wrong. Even the receptionist knew it. They would fit me in. Suddenly I was on a high-speed train--going someplace that I did not want to go. I didn't have a reservation. I didn't have a destination. It didn't matter. I had the symptom. I could come on board. As the train sped rapidly down the track, my primary care physician arranged an array of appointments with other physicians and various diagnostic tests. Descriptions of the pictures of my inner body did not verify the presence or absence of cancer. Instead they suggested a diverse assortment of diagnoses. It was like having to choose an answer for a multiple-choice question but choosing the answer that I liked best--most likely a fibroid--was not an option. Fiews from the Other Side of the Looking Glass: Reflections on My Journey with Ovarian Cancer captures author Terry Downey's experiences with a silent but deadly cancer. Downey describes finding herself on a high speed train going places that she did not want to go. As she progressed through diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, and radioimmune therapy, those who made the journey with her helped to transform her feelings of hopelessness and despair into feelings of hope and courage.

Book excerpt: Philosophers on Film from Bergson to Badiou is an anthology of writings on cinema and film by many of the major thinkers in continental philosophy. The book presents a selection of fundamental texts, each accompanied by an introduction and exposition by the editor, Christopher Kul-Want, that places the philosophers within a historical and intellectual framework of aesthetic and social thought. Encompassing a range of intellectual traditions—Marxism, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, poststructuralism, gender and affect theories—this critical reader features writings by Bergson, Benjamin, Adorno and Horkheimer, Merleau-Ponty, Baudrillard, Irigaray, Lyotard, Deleuze, Kristeva, Agamben, Žižek, Nancy, Cavell, Rancière, Badiou, Stiegler, and Silverman. Many of the texts discuss cinema as a mass medium; others develop phenomenological analyses of particular films. Reflecting upon the potential of films to challenge dominant forms of ideology, the anthology considers the ways in which they can disrupt the clichés of capitalist images and offer radical possibilities for creating new worlds of visceral experience outside the grasp of habitual forms of knowledge and subjectivity. Ranging from the early silent period of cinema through the classics of European and Hollywood cinema to the early twenty-first century, the films discussed offer a vivid sense of these philosophers’ concepts and ideas, casting new light on the history of cinema. This reader is an essential and valuable resource for a wide range of courses in film and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his theory of the 'mirror stage', the psychoanalyst and psychiatrist Jacques Lacan argued that the female body is defined by its lack of male attributes. Within this framework, he described female sexuality primarily as an absence, and assumed female subordination to the male gaze. However, what happens if one follows Jean Baudrillard's advice to 'swallow the mirror' and go through the 'looking-glass' to explore the reflections and realities that we encounter in the cultural mirror, which reflects the culture in question: its norms, ideals and values? What if the beautiful is inverted and becomes ugly; and the ugly is considered beautiful or shape-shifts into something conventionally thought of as beautiful? These are the fundamental questions that Basia Sliwinska poses in this important new enquiry into gender identity and the politics of vision in contemporary women's art.Through an innovative discussion of the mirror as a metaphor, Sliwinska reveals how the post-1989 practices of woman artists from both sides of the former Iron Curtain - such as Joanna Rajkowska, Marina Abramovic, Boryana Rossa, Natalia LL and Anetta Mona Chisa and Lucia Tkacova - go beyond gender binaries and instead embrace otherness and difference by playing with visual tropes of femininity. Their provocative works offer alternative representations of the female body to those seen in the cultural mirror. Their art challenges and deconstructs patriarchal representations of the social and cultural 'other', associated with visual tropes of femininity such as Alice in Wonderland, Venus and Medusa. The Female Body in the Looking-Glass makes a refreshing, radical intervention into art theory and cultural studies by offering new theoretical concepts such as 'the mirror' and 'genderland' (inspired by Alice's adventures in Wonderland) as critical tools with which we can analyse and explain recent developments in women's art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that language is primarily a means of communication. But do we always mean what we say – must we mean something when we talk? This book explores the other side of language, where words are incoherent and meaning fails us. it argues that this shadey side of language is more important in our everyday speech than linguists and philosophers recognize. Historically this other side of language known as has attracted more attention in France than elsewhere. It is particularly interesting because it brings together texts from a wide range of fields, including fiction, poetry and linguistics. The author also discusses the kind of linguistics that must be developed to deal with such texts, a linguistics which makes use of psychoanalytic knowledge. This tradition of writing has produced a major philosopher, Gilles Deleuze. This book provides an introduction to his work, an account of his original theory of meaning and an analysis of the celebrated Anti-Oedipus, which takes délire as one of its main themes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground Zero Earth It appears that the standard solutions to our basic problems has deteriorated into yelling and screaming. I think there is a better way! I have always felt that there must be some important conflict, some large out of equilibrium process, that drives philosophical development. In the past that important conflict was often major wars that were quite traumatic like the Civil War or World War I. The driving conflict could also be glaring inconsistencies in the social-cultural assumptions. This driving conflict leads the social-cultural realm to be out of equilibrium enough, over a long enough period, so it can cause major thought change. For the new age I could not, at first, find such a traumatic conflict, at least directly visible, such as in a war. What I have finally concluded is that the conflict of the new age is not any particular war but the fear of the war to end all wars. The new age has been driven by the out of equilibrium fear of the nuclear apocalypse. Thus the need for a new meta-physic. So they needed to go elsewhere to seek out sources of knowledge. The standard sources seem to only know the old physical world (at least the learned sources appeared to only want to know the old physical world) which is definitely passing away in a horrible nuclear way. The physical apocalypse that the new agers saw was far worse than anything in the Apocalypse of John. Remember, although we all knew about this problem we were not able to talk about it generally. It was too horrible. So it remains the subconscious assumption behind our thoughts and our own philosophical development. It is obvious that this driving force would engender more interest in another reality, a reality that could not be affected by the final nuclear event. The social-cultural realm was far from equilibrium, in a hidden way, and thus we were driven to seek new approaches to resolving our inner conflict. The new age had to happen and it had to question the meta-physics. Dr. Jerome Heath, Ph. D.

Its particular challenge lies in the folk and fairy tales that provide the text. Here are the roots of both faith and reason -- and the direct way to dump excess baggage and discover new and better questions. Scripture, Oriental wisdom, ecumenical theology: all receive calm and imaginative treatment in Song's hands."" --Joseph McLelland, McGill University, Montreal In this volume Dr. Song offers us 'golden keys to open the stonegates of religion.' Gathering together intercultural insights from the experience of people in many countries, these parables and stories usher us into the presence of Mystery. The easy flow of storytelling, smoothly mixed with sensitive interpretation, makes this volume very readable. To those who believe that theology has to do only with ideas and concepts, this volume may come as a surprise and a joyful discovery."" --S. J. Samartha, former Director, Dialogue Programme, World Council of Churches, Geneva C. S. Song explores the folk tales of the world and depicts God's answer to the thrust for the redemption of the people with 'one stroke of an Asian brush.' Here, the culture, religion, history, and suffering of the Asian people is the medium of God's redemptive revelation. Certainly, by this work he has contributed another 'transposition' of the biblical message to Asia, a monumental accomplishment in the formation of Asian theology. Reading this Theology of Folk Tales is exciting and illuminative."" --Nam-Dong Suh, Director, Institute for Mission Education, Seoul, Korea C. S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1865, English author CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODGSON (1832-1898), aka Lewis Carroll, wrote a fantastical adventure story for the young daughters of a friend. The adventures of Alice-named for one of the little girls to whom the book was dedicated-who journeys down a rabbit hole and into a whimsical underworld realm, instantly struck a chord with the British public, and then with readers around the world. Dodgson's playfulness-with language, with mathematical puzzles, with testy creatures such as the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts-still confounds and teases lovers of fantasy fiction today. Alice acolytes continue to unravel the book's strange riddles, and constantly find new meaning in the unexpected underlying themes, from the trials of early adolescence to the value of nonsense. The conundrums and delights of Alice ensures its ongoing influence over modern pop culture. This unabridged replica edition features the original illustrations by English artist SIR JOHN TENNIEL (1820-1914), and is a treasured addition to any library.
