Book excerpt: Jack DiCosimo is one of the foremost turn-around artists in the coal industry. Holly Branch Mining is supposed to be just another in a long list of failing mining operations that his distinctive hands-on style of management would bring back to profitability. Holly Branch's rapidly mounting success soon runs head-on into a plot to steal many millions of dollars from the electricity consuming public. In order for the scheme to work, Holly Branch must be economically destroyed. Kazuko Tazoe, a nurse from Japan, becomes captivated with Jack DiCosimo when he helps an injured miner and reveals his belief in eastern philosophy. Later, the couple are attacked by professional mercenaries and threatened with death unless Jack leaves Holly Branch. When he refuses, those behind the plot decide to blow up the mine and arrange for an accident to befall Jack. Kazuko comes to realize that Jack is willing to die before accepting defeat. In the tradition of her adopted homeland, the Appalachian Mountains, she is determined to save the man she now thinks of as her future husband.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Symposium on Respirable Coal Mine Dust, Washington D.C., November 3-4, 1969 by :
Download or read book Proceedings of the Symposium on Respirable Coal Mine Dust, Washington D.C., November 3-4, 1969 written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its continuing program in protecting the health and safety of the nation's coal miners, the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, presented on November 3-4, 1969, a Symposium on Respirable Coal Mine Dust. The Symposium was cosponsored by the American Mining Congress, the National Coal Association, and the National Independent Coal Operator's Association. Within recent years it has become evident that a large number of our coal miners develop a severe occupational respiratory disease commonly referred to as "black lung," but more appropriately designated as "coal worker's pneumoconiosis." Studies in the United States as well as in European countries clearly demonstrate that prevention of the disease is related to the control and suppression of respirable coal mine dust. This Symposium dealt with the various engineering methods of controlling dust in underground coal mines including ventialation, water suppression, machine design, and dust collection; and a discussion of respirators and life support systems. The merits of these various procedures and their potential application to underground coal mining were examined. In every case attempts were made to secure outstanding talent in each of the major areas discussed. The proceedings of the Symposium should constitue a reference on current technology for dust control. The Symposium helped to delineate those areas where additional research is needed and highlighted the necessity for concentrated efforts by both industry and Government for intensive research and investigative programs on engineering procedures to control respirable coal mine dust within prescribed hygienic limits. Hopefully, research will move so rapidly that within a reasonably short time this publication will be out of date in terms of dust control technology
Download or read book Mountain Hands written by Sam Venable and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hazel Pendley creates heirloom-quality quilts. Ed Ripley wraps bits of fur and feathers into trout flies the size of gnats. Edna Hartong still makes an item that has all but disappeared from the American scene: lye soap. All of these people, and many more like them, are Appalachians who work with their hands. Journalist Sam Venable and photographer Paul Efird spent four years combing the hills and hollows of Southern Appalachia to find these talented individuals and let them talk about their work. Mountain Hands is an intimate look at more than three dozen such craftspeople and their vocations. Venable and Efird encountered folks who pursue popular crafts, such as basketweaving and clockmaking. But they found practitioners of other trades--wallpaper hangers and rail splitters, beekeepers and gravediggers--whose work also depends upon dexterity and upon expressing a distinctive Appalachian way of life. Some are college educated, some can barely read and write; some have lived in these hills all their lives, others have only recently come to call them home. Yet each feels bound to the region through a deep sense of belonging, and each owes at least part of his or her livelihood to handwork. While most of us may think of working with one's hands as entering computer data, these individuals attest to the perseverance--and appeal--of more traditional ways. Mountain Hands is a celebration in words and photographs of gifted people who understand and appreciate the Appalachian heritage--and who live it every day. The Author: A fifth-generation southern Appalachian, Sam Venable is a newspaper columnist whose award-winning observations on daily life appear four times a week in the Knoxville News-Sentinel. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Venable has spent most of his career roaming the highlands of his home state. He and his wife, Mary Ann, also a Tennessee native and UT graduate, live in a log house atop a wooded ridge on the outskirts of Knoxville. The Photographer: Paul Efird is a native of Rome, Georgia. He holds a degree in biology from Shorter College but has spent his professional career as a news photographer. After working for two newspapers in Georgia, he moved to Tennessee in 1990 and became a staff photographer for the News-Sentinel. Efird is an avid hiker, canoeist, and backpacker. He and his wife, Stephanie, live in Knoxville.

Book Synopsis Simon Cowell by : Shaina C. Indovino
Download or read book Simon Cowell written by Shaina C. Indovino and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, more and more people are going to college to further their education. It's hard to become a scientist, a professor, or a businessperson without getting some sort of college degree--but college isn't always necessary to achieve success. Some people are ready to enter the workforce right after high school. Simon Cowell was one of those people. The son of a British music executive, Cowell--instead of asking for help from his father--worked his way up through the music industry, starting from the mailroom. Though Simon found huge success in the music business, today the sarcastic star is most famous for his part in television shows like "American Idol", "America's Got Talent", and "The X Factor". Simon's known on screen as a short-tempered, sharp-tongued judge, but he's also had a role to play behind the scenes, creating and producing television shows in the United States and Britain. And what's most amazing about his story is that the music and television mogul has done it all without a college degree!
