Book Synopsis The Carnivorous Dinosaurs by : Kenneth Carpenter
Download or read book The Carnivorous Dinosaurs written by Kenneth Carpenter and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-07 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meat-eating dinosaurs, or Theropoda, include some of the fiercest predators that ever lived. Some of the group's members survive to this day—as birds. The theropod/bird connection has been explored in several recent works, but this book presents 17 papers on a variety of other topics. It is organized into three parts. Part I explores morphological details that are important for understanding theropod systematics. Part II focuses on specific regions of theropod anatomy and biomechanics. Part III examines various lines of evidence that reveal something about theropods as living creatures. The contributors are Ronan Allain, Rinchen Barsbold, Kenneth Carpenter, Karen Cloward, Rodolfo A. Coria, Philip J. Currie, Peter M. Galton, Robert Gay, Donald M. Henderson, Dong Huang, James I. Two new species of Ceratosaurus are described, the first based on an articulated skeleton from the Fruita Paleontological Area in western Colorado, and the second on skeletal elements of a single individual from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in east-central Utah. A number of additional specimens, identifiable only to genus, have been found in North America and are mentioned or briefly described. Specimens from East Africa and Switzerland are also considered to be identifiable only to genus. The peculiar genus Labrosaurus is placed in synonymy with Allosaurus.
Book Synopsis Osteology of Deinonychus antirrhopus, an Unusual Theropod from the Lower Cretaceous of Montana by : John H. Ostrom
Download or read book Osteology of Deinonychus antirrhopus, an Unusual Theropod from the Lower Cretaceous of Montana written by John H. Ostrom and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John H. Ostrom's expeditions to the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming and Montana in the 1960s resulted in discoveries and research that would change long-held concepts in paleontology. This fiftieth-anniversary edition of his now well-known description of the type specimen of Deinonychus antirrhopus revisits the work that redefined theropod dinosaurs as the intelligent, agile, and gregarious ancestors of modern birds and led in the late twentieth century to a renaissance in the study of dinosaurs and the evolution of flight.
