It all starts when an immigrant named Oscar opens a barber shop... When Oscar lands on Ellis Island, he has only a suitcase and a down payment in his hands. And he has a dream-- to own his own barbershop. After it opens on the corner of Front St. and Second Ave, Oscar's barbershop becomes a beloved local fixture... until the day Oscar decides to move on and become a subway conductor. Over the years, this barbershop will change hands to become a lady's clothing store, then a soup kitchen. A coffee shop follows, then the space becomes an army recruitment center, then a candy shop. As the years pass and the world changes, the proud corner store stands tall, watching American history unfold around it. Barry Wittenstein and debut husband-and-wife illustration team Kristen and Kevin Howdeshell tell the rich, fascinating story of key moments in American history, as reflected through the eyes--and the patrons--of the corner store.

Book excerpt: From the landmark films of Tony Richardson to the untimely death of Natasha Richardson – this is the saga of one of the greatest dynasties in British film and theatre. In 1928, at the end of a production of Hamlet at the Old Vic, Laurence Olivier strode to the front of the stage to hush the audience and announced, pointing at his co-star Michael Redgrave, 'Tonight a great actress has been born. Laertes has a daughter.' He meant Vanessa Redgrave. That is where this dramatic book’s story begins. It concludes in 2009, with the sudden and tragic death in a skiing accident of Vanessa’s daughter Natasha Richardson – and further family sorrow soon to follow with the deaths of both Corin and Lynn Redgrave. The story of this amazing family is explosive throughout - from the tangled private life of Tony Richardson, Natasha’s father, who directed major films such as Look back in Anger, to Vanessa and Corin’s complicated involvement with the Workers’ Revolutionary Party, to the emergence of a fourth generation of fine actors with Natasha and Joely.? There is truly never a dull moment – but plenty of scandal, melodrama, tragedy and intrigue – in the story of this remarkable dynasty, whose contribution to British drama and film has been immense.

Included are seven of her homes past and present, from the famous "Brody House" up to her current homes, and she offers tips and advice on what each house taught her. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated art history and cultural biography, The Street of Wonderful Possibilities focuses on one of the most influential artistic quarters in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - London's Tite Street, where a staggering amount of talent thrived between the 1870s and 1930s, including James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Oscar Wilde and John Singer Sargent. It provides a new, fresh perspective on legendary figures in British art and literature and explores the relationship between these artists and their living environment. Today Tite Street is a narrow, quiet thoroughfare tucked away in a cosy corner of London. With the exception of a few blue plaques upon its walls, there is little indication of the rich and vibrant history of a street that once stood at the heart of the London art world. In this thriving artistic quarter, artists and writers created a bohemian enclave that would challenge Victorian values in art and literature. For Oscar Wilde, Tite Street was full of 'wonderful possibilities', while for Whistler it was 'the birthplace of art' where the nascent Aesthetic Movement was nurtured in his highly controversial White House. From the studios and houses of Tite Street issued modern masterpieces in art such as Whistler's Harmony in Pink and Greyand Sargent's Lady Agnew, and in literature with Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. But Tite Street had a dark side as well. Here Whistler was bankrupted, Frank Miles was sent to an asylum, Wilde was imprisoned, and Peter Warlock was gassed to death. Throughout its turbulent existence, Tite Street mirrored the world around it. From the Aesthetic Movement to the Edwardian suffragettes, through the bombs of the Blitz in the 1940s to the bombs of the IRA in the 1970s, Tite Street remained a home to innumerable artists and writers, socialites and suffragettes, musicians and madmen. Countless biographies have explored the major figures in Tite Street individually, but never in the context of their living and working environment. The Street of Wonderful Possibilitiesunfolds this complex history, tying together the private and professional lives of Tite Street's artists, writers and bohemians to form a colourful tapestry of art and intrigue, illuminating their relationships to each other, to Tite Street and to a rapidly modernising London at the fin de siecle.

Book excerpt: On a cold February morning in 1908, the ground under Coal Valley, Illinois, trembled as an earthquake opened the earth, collapsed mining tunnels, and created chasms and fissures as deep as five hundred feet below the rolling hills. It would forever be known as Coal Valleys great cave-in. Thirteen men lay trapped for three months as tensions rose among the townspeople, rescuers, and families of the trapped miners. One rescue attempt after another failed due to aftershocks, weather, and just plain bad luck. The dangers were great below ground, but the twisted minds of some of the towns inhabitants made the danger even greater at the surface. A story of adventure, suspense, greed, romance, fantasy, and redemption that will leave the reader wondering who or what was actually trapped under Coal Valley. Was it just the miners, the apparitions that they faced, or was it the underground dwellers whose intelligence was advancing at such a rapid pace that they were preparing for their place in the sun?

Book excerpt: My Name is Eddie Nilsson, and when I was 19 I packed up what little I had and moved 2000 miles to really start my life. I love my family but sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands and carve a path all your own. Now, years later I look back at the wild decision I made, the big dreams I followed, and all the sorts of people I´ve met. Although not a unique story it is one that I believe resonates with people because we all in our own way make absurd leaps to become ourselves. Using a mixture of life experiences from myself and friends this book is fiction but with heavy helpings of reality and a lot of relatable moments and fun times. Although I wrote the book as a passion project to prove to myself I could do it, I have had positive responses from those who have read it, however, because it was such a personal project I am reluctant to involve big publishing houses, that's why I bring it here, to perhaps connect my story with other that might need it on a more personal platform. The book will be printed in Sweden. The size of this book is A5 with a matt finish. I consider this book Young adult as it deals with themes of change, growing up, and family (both the ones you´re born with and the ones you aren't). The story focuses on `Oscar` a boy from a tiny village in Bosnia who bets his future on a risky application to a University in Sweden. After getting accepted he must wrestle the excitement of a new start with the fear of leaving his family and comfort zone. With the promise to stay in touch and a suitcase full of hope, he has to move to another country, make new friends, study hard, learn a language ... oh and he doesn't even know where he will be living when he arrives. Along his way, friends new and old help in any way they can, and a cast of colourful characters promise they aren't getting in the way deliberately. Characters Oscar is well-mannered if not a little stubborn, his family is full of love and laughs despite being poor. He dreams of becoming a doctor and has studied hard all his life in order to make this a reality. Oscar loves helping people but can he sit still long enough to allow others to help HIM. Selma is the girl next door. They've grown up together and live on the same streets but they might as well be from different worlds. Her family are rich and it's not just their big house that keeps them distant. Maybe money can solve some problems but when money is the problem, will Selma see the solution might be closer than she realises. Erik, the roommate likes to make jokes, sometimes at Oscars expense but underneath it all he realises that if they are going to live together they might as well get along, and even helps him acclimate to his new surroundings. Nora is the letting agent and she ... well she is hard to summarise you´ll have to see her antics for yourself.

Hollywood is never so cutthroat as it is at the turn of each year, when celebrities and their millions of fans across the globe begin their weeks-long, exclusive obsession with the Academy Awards. Everyone who's anyone winds up under its luxe care and the watchful eye of its PR director, Juliette Greyson. When Juliette begins to suspect that conspiracy, nrather than coincidence, links what some are calling an Oscar Curse, more than just her job is threatened. But this is Hollywood after all -- and during Oscar season it's almost impossible to know what is real and what is staged. Even when it comes to murder. Who is lying and who is merely acting? When does murder stop being murder and start becoming really good publicity? Erudite and whip smart, suspenseful and sexy, Oscar Season is the perfect read to sneak in between red carpet interviews.
