His hair was bright and wavy; the ruddiness of health suffused his cheeks; his eyes sparkled with wholesome fun, good humour, and high thoughts. He was the sort of boy who makes the world seem jolly even when the east wind blows. Goodness and merriment radiated from him visibly; the darkest room appeared to glow and brighten when he entered it. What a pity such a glorious creature should ever grow old, sighed Wilde. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oscar Wilde: Fragments and Memories Arly in the nineties Clyde Fitch, an ambitious young American, had a play produced in London.\ After the final curtain some rowdies in the pit coaxed the inexperienced playwright to appear before the footlights and proceeded to boo and hiss him off as soon as he stepped in view. But the young man was not crushed. They will have to applaud me yet, he exclaimed, and his subsequent meteoric career proved that he had fine talents. At that time, however, there were few in London who would listen to his verses, stories, and plays, and fewer still tobuy them. In a notebook of the period we find him paraphrasing an ancient pessimistic troubadour, My fate is like the nightingale's, That singeth all night long, While still the woodlands mournfully But echo back his song. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliography of Oscar Wilde The author of this astonishing and ingenious compilation has asked me to write an introduction, not because he imagines that I know anything about bibliography, but because he wishes for the imprimatur of Wilde's Literary Executor. Pius the Ninth, when invited to assist the sale of a certain writer's book, promised to put it on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. The kindest act which I could do for Mr. Stuart Mason would be to injunct the result of his toil on the ground that he or his publishers had committed some breach of the Copyright Laws. This would have tempted the dealer in unauthorised literature, who would, I am sure, have invested at once in what might promise to become "curious" and "scarce." But Mr. Mason has pedantically observed all the principles of the Berne and Berlin Conventions and those other conventions which have no other authority than courtesy. I cannot pretend to have read his book through; but I can affirm that in turning over the proofs for ten minutes I learned more about Wilde's writings than Wilde himself ever knew. As one of Stevenson's heroes said of Whitakerf I acquired more information than I shall be able to make use of in a lifetime. From one point of view these pages afford me peculiar pleasure. The smaller natures and the meaner minds still appealed to him, and he underwent punishment rather than forego their whispered exchange of words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Memoriam, Oscar Wilde Much Of this Wilde literature was but repetition of what, despite our whilom Puritanic aversion from this writer's work, is already fairly fa miliar to us. One curious little book I came upon, however, Of such inti mate, melancholy interest, that I took it away with me. Its title was In Memoriam: O. W., and as I sipped my cup Of Berliner Kaz'fee at the Aus tria, I determined some day to turn it into English. This I have now done. One may wonder whether it were not the high fates who so gratified him in order that, from his purgatory, he might rise to a life more evolved. But that view is perhaps obvious. Wilde himself, who was the least mystic of men, accepted it. In the De Pro fundis, after weighing his disasters, he said Of these things I am not yet worthy. That the English-speaking peoples are indebted to him for this goes, likewise, without say ing. In the light of a newer criticism Oscar Wilde will be seen to have also been the prophet of the modern social gospel. And in the De Profundis and in The Soul of Man Under Socialism we have not only the moulder of fine sentences, but the heart and very soul of a man. Some have spoken of Oscar Wilde, saying that he was ever the man of attitudes and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oscar Wilde: A Critical Study I wish to thank Mr. Robert Ross, Wilde's literary executor, Who has helped me in every possible way, allowed me to read many of the letters that Wilde addressed to him, and given much time out of a very busy life to the verification, from documents in his possession, of the biographical facts included in my book. I wish to thank Mr. Walter Ledger for much interesting information, and for the sight of many rare editions of Wilde's books that made possible the correction of several bibliographical errors into which I had fallen. I wish to thank Mr. Martin Seeker for putting at my disposal his collection of late nineteenth-century literature. I wish to thank an anonymous author for lend ing me the proof-sheets of a forthcoming book, which will contain a full and accurate account of the legal proceedings for and against Wilde. Many of those who knew Wilde have helped me, by letter or in conversation, with valu able reminiscence. I would thank, particularly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oscar Wilde: The Story of an Unhappy Friendship I was not by him in the poor room of the poor inn where he died. I had not the con solation of following to the nameless grave the lonely hearse which had no flowers on its pall. But, as many hundreds of miles away, I read of his solitary death, and heard of the supreme abandonment of him by those to whom also he had always been good, I determined to say all the things that I knew of him, to tell people what he really was, so that my story might help a little to a better understanding of a man of rare heart and rarer genius.
