Book Synopsis Orlando Firefighting by : Ginger Bryant
Download or read book Orlando Firefighting written by Ginger Bryant and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystery surrounds the origins of Orlandos name, but the most probable explanation for its moniker dates back to the exploits of Orlando Reeves. While guarding Central Florida forts against Native American attacks, Reeves was alarmed in the middle of the night. A log rolled toward Reeves in the darkness, and he knew it disguised movement by an opponent. After firing his gun to awaken his fellow soldiers, he was bombarded by arrows, which resulted in his death. Orlandos name was bestowed upon a local post office in 1857 and then on the city incorporated in 1875. Just like the brave solider for whom the city was named, firefighters of Orlando boldly risk their lives for the welfare of others. This volume commemorates those men and women and traces a rich history from 1883, when a devastating fire inspired William C. Sherman to start a volunteer fire company, to today.

Download or read book Let Burn written by Rachel K. Wentz and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, desiring a meaningful, high-paced career in public service, Rachel Wentz left her university studies to become a firefighter/paramedic. Only the eighth woman hired by the Orlando Fire Department, a highly competitive department steeped in tradition, Wentz excelled, completing an AS in Fire Science, a master’s in public administration, and numerous specialized training courses to prepare her for an administrative position within the department. Wentz spent eleven years with OFD, experiencing a career that was every bit as exciting and challenging as she had sought. A moving, candid, and eloquent memoir, Let Burn recounts her experiences as a firefighter/paramedic, during which time she witnessed aspects of life and death few people are privy to, experiences that shaped her as a professional and as a person. From the rigorous demands of training to the extraordinary calls Wentz responded to, Let Burn details the gratifying aspects of the field, but also demonstrates the precarious nature of the job: a heated altercation at the scene of an industrial fire leads to Wentz losing almost everything she’s worked for and the dramatic end of a storied career. In vivid detail, Let Burn provides a firsthand glimpse into the hidden world of firefighting and emergency medicine.

Book Synopsis Incorporating External Affairs Functions with the Orlando Fire Department District Chiefs by :
Download or read book Incorporating External Affairs Functions with the Orlando Fire Department District Chiefs written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to fiscal constraints in place since the last recession, the Orlando Fire Department (OFD) has been forced to prioritize resources. Shrinking revenues have necessitated challenging choices in allocating money and manpower. The result has been an operational bias towards emergency related services with a minimization of non-emergency ones namely emergency management and public relations. Though economic reality, this positioning is at odds with FEMA's National Preparedness Goal and Whole Community approach to risk management. USFA, in championing the goal, has suggested broadening existing roles with an external affairs function to support non-emergency services. Currently, OFD's station personnel perform support functions as part of their overall responsibilities. The problem is that no external affairs functions have been identified for the District Chief (DC) position. This study used the descriptive research method to identify external affairs functions for the DC by answering the following questions: 1) How much time do DC spend on External Affairs functions? 2) What present External Affairs functions do DC conduct? 3) What External Affairs functions should DC conduct? 4) What changes are needed in the DC position description to increase the effectiveness of External Affairs functions within OFD? The procedures employed an extensive literature review on the evolution of external affairs functions as related to fire department personnel as well as an analysis of the current DC roles and responsibilities. The results revealed that the DC position is predominantly administrative with minimal community involvement. Public interaction is rare and not expected. It was recommended the District Chief role be revised to incorporate external affairs functions including attending community events and meetings, partnering with outside agencies, providing timely safety alerts, community relations events, and working with local organizations on safety programs.

True leaders develop their power long before they receive a promotion. This text is designed to provide a guide and self-awareness gut check for individuals of all ranks. However, the emphasis of this text is for the informal leader in the organization, who is the catalyst for action. This text is for the individual who considers mastery the minimum standard. This is the second edition edited by Marla Patterson, former Books and Video Acquisition Manager for Fire Engineering/Pennwell. The first edition was developed with a zero dollar budget and self-published. After an overwhelming response and even adoption for promotional testing and officer development at multiple departments across the country Brian reinvested in this grassroots effort to further refine the Barn Boss Leadership text with the second edition.
