Book excerpt: The digital copies of these recordings are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits Preface Knowing that it is a serious disadvantage to any people or country whose history is not written for the benefit of posterity, it has, for many years past, occurred to me that I ought to attempt something in this direction in connexion with Wesleyan Methodism, which has not only existed in this Colony of Sierra Leone for more than a century, but has conferred numerous untold benefits, intellectual, moral, and spiritual, on the people in general. Owing to the attendant strain of a Methodist Circuit life, and the great responsibility that rested on me as a Superintendent Minister since the early part of 1867, I could not possibly afford time to undertake the gigantic work of preparing a history of the rise and progress of Methodism and its Missions in Sierra Leone. A gracious Providence having, however, mercifully spared me to retire from the multifarious duties of circuit work at the close of the first quarter of the year 1910, after fifty-one years' active service, I feel that, as the oldest Wesleyan minister in the district, God has no doubt preserved me for the accomplishment of the important task; I must therefore at once proceed to put together certain facts from credible and available records, along with my reminiscences of sundry matters that are about half a century old, for the information alike of both young and old. With the belief that the obituaries of both the European Missionaries and African Ministers that died in the work here or elsewhere will be foundinteresting and appreciated, particularly in Methodistcircles in which they were not previously known; their insertion will be given in the pages within therespective decades in which the deaths occurred. For the map of Sierra Leone showing approximate Tribal Divisions the writer of this history is indebted to Mr. C. H. Lukach's book, A Bibliography of Sierra Leone.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of South Africa This is a simple history of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of South Africa, and also of the Methodist Missions in the Transvaal and Rhodesia which are under the control of the British Wesleyan Missionary Society. I am convinced that there is still a rich mine of Methodist lore in South Africa awaiting the research of the skilful explorer. I have only been able to scratch the surface. The preliminary chapters on the origin of British Methodism are intended for South African readers, who may not have easy access to the standard works on the subject. I am indebted to many ministers and laymen for information and photographs, to all of whom I tender my grateful acknowledgments; but my special thanks are due to the Rev. F. Mason for permission to use his valuable notes on Natal Methodism, published in the South African Methodist, and also to the Rev. T. Chubb, B.A., for his careful revision of the proof sheets. I hope I shall be forgiven by those who are acquainted with the native languages for using the plural terms Namaqua, Barolong, and Basuto as singulars, and for using the Anglicized plurals Namaquas, Barolongs, and Basutos, as they are the forms generally employed. May this little work deepen the interest of all Methodists in their own Church, and quicken their desires for its spiritual and material prosperity. Book Synopsis A Short History of Wesleyan Methodist Foreign Missions by : John Telford
Download or read book A Short History of Wesleyan Methodist Foreign Missions written by John Telford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Wesleyan Methodist Foreign Missions This History appears at a moment when the missionary spirit of Methodism has found memorable expression in the removal of a burdensome debt and a large addition to the annual income of the Society. The facts given in this volume abundantly justify the confidence of our Church, and show that the sacrifices it has made during the last century and a quarter for the spread of the gospel are bearing fruit for which we can never cease to be grateful to God. If the History helps in any measure to supply fuller knowledge of the work and workers of the past and the tasks of the present, the writer will be well rewarded for the enormous labour involved in preparing such a record. The history of each mission can be traced chronologically by following the references given in the Index. The penny History of A fissions may also be of service for more general distribution. The proof-sheets have been read by the Revs. J. Milton Brown, W. H. Findlay, M.A., and Henry Haigh, to whom the author is greatly indebted for many valuable corrections and suggestions. Miss Hellier has also kindly revised the passage about the Women's Auxiliary. Any help towards making the volume more complete and reliable at any point will be welcomed.
