Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of the Four Gospels I did not venture to call upon this eminent man for the mere gratification of a natural curiosity, but for the purpose of ascertaining one or two facts which I needed for a note to Ritter's work on the Holy Land, which I was then editing and translating. As Ritter had been a near and valued friend of Tischendorf, it was a matter of great satisfaction to the latter that an American had proposed to give to the people of England and the United States a version of the works of that great and excellent man; and no welcome could be more cordial than Tischendorf extended. He is by no means the old, smoke-dried, bad-mannered, garrulous, ill-dressed, and offensively dirty man, who often answers in Germany to the title of Professor. On the contrary, Tischendorf is a man looking young and florid, though probably hard upon sixty. I have seen many a man of forty whose face is more worn, and whose air is older, than that of this greatest of German scholars. Nor has he at all that shyness which a life in the study is almost sure to engender; he is free, open, genial, and has the manner of a gentleman who has traveled largely, and who is thoroughly familiar with society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels in the Earliest Church History However the ground may change in the conflict as to the credibility of the Gospel history, the first line of defence, it seems to me, must always be the external evidence. It is the external evidence for the Four Gospels which I have endeavoured in these Lectures to state in the light of the most recent research. The statement does not profess to be minutely exhaustive, but it is hoped that nothing material has been overlooked. To the Baird Trustees I owe cordial acknowledgments for giving me the opportunity of dealing with this important subject for the first time in their Lectureship. It has been a high gratification to me that my old teacher, Professor Charteris, has read the Lectures in proof, and done so with the ardour and keenness of former years. From my ever-helpful colleague, Professor Cowan, I have received similar aid and many valuable suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels: A New Translation Jesus and his disciples spoke and wrote Aramaic. His reported words and discourses, and the earliest accounts of his deeds, were written down and circulated in that language, as no one doubts. Documents of this sort were numerous (Luke 1:1), and they attest literary skill of a high order; thus notably the rather extensive source, "Q," used by Matthew and Luke. In what way these primitive records were related to our Four Gospels, is a question which hitherto has not received any satisfactory answer. It is purposed here to show that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John were composed in Aramaic on the basis of popular documents widespread in Palestine, and that they were by others translated into Greek without intended change. Also, that Luke employed only Semitic sources, assembling them into an especially complete Gospel, which he himself translated. The evidence of translation, in each and all of the Four Gospels, is perfectly clear and very complete. The attempt is here made to give an English rendering which takes constant account of the original Semitic text, everywhere closely reproduced in the Greek. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aramaic Origin of the Fourth Gospel IN a sermon preached in June 1920 before the University of Oxford* the present writer made a plea for a closer synthesis of Old Testament learning with the study of the New Testament; and reviewing summarily and generally the kind of New Testa ment problems which might receive fuller elucidation through the more direct application to them of Semitic learning, he put forward the possibility that in the future a Semitic scholar might arise who, examining the language of the Fourth Gospel in detail, would prove beyond the range of reasonable doubt that it was based upon an Aramaic original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Problems and Their Solution: Being an Inquiry Into the Origin of the Four Gospels Throughout the whole of the time during which I was gradually gaining light on the methods and circumstances in which the Gospels were composed, I never met with anything that tended for one moment to shake my first conclusion as to the date at which the original records were written. Every fresh feature that I noticed in the Gospels themselves, every new book or article that I read, bearing directly or ever so re motely on the subject, added to the certainty of my belief, and increased my wonder that any other opinion could ever have been entertained. Of the evidential value of the facts herein presented it is needless for me to speak. But I cannot omit to express my profound and reverent admiration of the Providence which has reserved for this critical age the discovery of facts of such supreme importance, and of the Wisdom which has treasured up in the Gospels themselves, even in those very features which were most enigmatical, convincing demonstration of their authenticity, and of the absolute certainty of those great historic events which they record. For it is utterly impossible to imagine that the writers of the Gospel narratives could have perverted, at the very time they were spoken and acted, the words and facts which they daily heard and saw, or have intermixed with them inventions of their own imagination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels as Historical Documents, Vol. 3: The Fourth Gospel My aim in this volume has not been, except incidentally, to throw light upon the subject-matter of the Fourth Gospel, but to ascertain - so far as can by way of a preliminary study be done, and needs to be in order to determine our attitude towards it from the outset in using it - whether it has a right to be treated as an independent historical witness alongside of the Synoptic Gospels, having drawbacks indeed in this character as they have, though largely different ones, but whose testimony cannot any more than theirs be disregarded. I am convinced that this right belongs to it, which in recent times has been and still is denied by many. As a far fuller study than any attempted here of the actual contributions made to our knowledge of the Life and Work of Jesus Christ by each of the four Gospels I may mention T/ze Four/fold Gospel by Dr E. A. Abbott. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Jesus of the Four Gospels The first part of this work is a collation of all that is said, and just what is said, in each of the four Gospels, regarding the more important incidents of Jesus' life. Every statement in the text, it is thought, is accurate, free from personal coloring or sectarian bias, and may be verified from the passages cited. After examining various lives of Jesus, harmonies of the Gospels, etc., there seemed to be need of such a work, which would furnish simply the facts, and leave the reader to form his own conclusions. Certain notes are appended in elucidation of or comment on the text, and these may be taken for what they are worth. Their underlying idea is, that the true greatness of Jesus lay in His being a human Teacher and not a Divine Redeemer, and therefore the supernatural parts of the Gospel story are not of vital importance. The King James version has been used, since that has been the Bible of English-speaking peoples up to the present century, and their conceptions of Jesus have been formed from it, and not from the revised version. The differences between the two versions are probably not material to any matter herein discussed. The second part is an attempt to point out, and comment on, the many and wide divergences that have grown up between the preachings of Jesus and the practices of His professed followers. Its object is not to criticise the short-comings of Christianity, but to bring home to the people of the United States a realization of the practical effect which these divergences have had, and are now having, on political and economic questions of high import to the present and future welfare of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel: The Question of Its Origin Stated and Discussed Mr. Tayler, belongs to the primitive age of Christianity, and cannot be brought lower than the first half of the second century. Never theless, he does not consider it as the work of imposture: partly because it does not speak of John as its author till the last chapter, which he holds to be a later addition; and, also, because the book is really filled with the current of spir itual life which came from Jesus. His work ends with an attempt to show that Baron Bunsen was wrong in saying that, if John's Gospel is not authentic, there can be no historical Christ and no Christian Church. On the other hand, Mr. Tayler asserts that Christianity is not damaged by the results Of this criticism, and that we lose nothing in discovering that the Fourth Gospel was not the work of an apostle, but of an um known writer at Ephesus, in the second century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Concerning the Origin of Christianity The analysis of the, four Gospels, proceeding on the admission that they may contain a mixture of truth and error, is a very com plicated but not impracticable task. It is necessary to form an opinion as to the date of each writing, the general character of each author, and his peculiarities as a writer; to institute continual comparisons between the events or discourses which he relates, and the opinions and controversies which arose subsequently to his own time to weigh the probability in favour of the real occurrence of a fact, considered in reference to the ascertained history of the time, with that in favour of its invention by the author or some intermediate narrator; to consider what greater degree of weight is due to the testimony from the accordance of all, or of several of the writers and to ascertain whether they wrote independently, or copied from each other. By this laborious method of sifting and examining, it must be admitted that it would be possible to obtain a tolerably correct history from a collection of records acknowledged to be of a very mixed character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Three Gospels: Their Origin and Relations This little book is an attempt to set before the ordinary English reader some of the results of recent study of the First Three Gospels. A few years ago I endeavoured to draw up a brief account of the general social and religious conditions amid which Jesus lived and taught. It was my hope then that se in Palestine might be speedily followed by a short and simple Commentary on the Gospel according to S. Luke. But the preparation of a series of Notes on that Gospel for the use of parents and teachers, l convinced me that no commentary could be really useful or intelligible until the way had been made ready by a previous exposition of the modes of thought and feeling which helped to Shape the Gospel narratives. The following pages are intended to set forth some of these ideas, and describe the growth of the documents in which they were finally embodied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Authorship of the Four Gospels: External Evidences In the summer of 1881, at the Pigeon Cove Ho tel, situated on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, I became acquainted with an intelligent gentleman, aged about seventy years, who resided in Buffalo and, who, like myself, was staying at the hotel for the benefit of the sea air. At an early period in our acquaintance he introduced the subject of the Christian religion as a topic of conversation, and, during several weeks after ward, seemed quite disposed to talk on this subject, whenever an opportunity offered. In one of the earliest of our conversations, he asked me if I had read the Gospel of Marcion. I replied: No! I do not so much as know there is a gospel known by that name, I never heard of it before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authorship of the Fourth Gospel Christian antiquity has been unanimous in transmitting this book to the Church as the work of a man who was the disciple - nay, more than the disciple - the personal friend of Jesus, John the son of Zebedee, a fisherman on the shores of the Lake of Gennesaret. The Church, as well as the sects most opposed to it, are agreed upon this point. In the second century the Judeo-Christian party, the most hostile to the apostolic spirit, used this narrative as taken from a book whose statements could not be called in question.
