Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin, of Cultivated Plants The knowledge of the origin of cultivated plants is interesting to agriculturists, to botanists, and even to historians and philosophers concerned with the dawnings of civilization. I went into this question of origin in a chapter in my work on geographical botany; but the book has become scarce, and, moreover, since 1855 important facts have been discovered by travellers, botanists, and archaeologists. Instead of publishing a second edition, I have drawn up an entirely new and more extended work, which treats of the origin of almost double the number of species belonging to the tropics and the temperate zones. It includes almost all plants which are cultivated, either on a large scale for economic purposes, or in orchards and kitchen gardens. I have always aimed at discovering the condition and the habitat of each species before it was cultivated. The proceedings are unusual in that it is a rare event to see archaeologists and geneticists coming together to discuss the connection between historical facts and biological phenomena. The aim of the symposium was to discuss the origin of some important cultivated plants (wheat, maize, barley, oat, legumes and fruit trees) not only in relation to genetical mechanisms but also as a complex of historical facts recognizable through archaeological research. This international Meeting based on interdisciplinary concepts, met with a prompt and positive reaction from all those specialists invited to attend. The book itself is an unparalleled contribution to the interdisciplinary knowledge on the origin of crop plants and agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sturtevant's Notes on Edible Plants Gentlemen. - It gives me peculiar pleasure to transmit to you for publication a manuscript prepared from notes by Dr. E. Lewis Sturtevant, the distinguished first Director of this Station, the publication to be known as "Sturtevant's Notes on Edible Plants." Dr. Sturtevant was one of that group of men who early espoused the cause of agricultural science in the United States, a field in which he became distinguished, his studies in economic botany being one of his notable achievements. When he retired in 1887 as Director of this Station, he left behind him a voluminous manuscript consisting of a compilation of existing knowledge on the edible food plants of the world, a piece of work involving a laborious and extended research in botanical literature. For twenty years this manuscript remained untouched, when Dr. U. P. Hedrick undertook its editing, a difficult and arduous task, well performed, in order that so valuable a collection of knowledge might become available to botanists and to students of food economics. It is especially appropriate that such a volume should be issued at this time. Food problems are becoming more and more acute as the demand for food increasingly overshadows the supply. Primitive peoples depended upon food resources which are now neglected. Other sources of possible human nutrition have doubtless remained untouched, and the time may come when a comprehensive utilization of food plants will be essential to human sustenance. It is believed, therefore, that the information so ably brought together by Dr. Sturtevant cannot fail to become increasingly useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Cultivated Plants Most Commonly Grown in the Continental United States and Canada Although the purpose of this book is to describe the species most commonly cultivated, there are three classes of rather marked excep tions: (1) Many plants not Offered by dealers nor appearing in printed lists are in cultivation in Old premises and private gardens, and are likely to be exchanged from hand to hand; these plants have established themselves in the affections Of growers and they should be recorded, even though not common or perhaps in the process of passing out in a commercial epoch. (2) Species of rather 'recent introduction that promise to be acquisitions but which are not yet well known; it is im possible to forecast which ones are likely to become fairly common or established. (3) Certain species Of great historic interest in Europe and other countries that should be known as a matter Of general knowledge but which may be little cultivated in North America; an example is Lupinus albus, lupine of the ancients and still grown in parts of Europe for human food, forage, and green-manuring, but rarely seen in this country; in this category are many food-plants likely at any time to awaken interest here, and also such things as are frequently grown in economic collections; these subjects are always interesting to students in the educational institutions. While some of the species in these three categories may not be common, they may nevertheless be significant to man or to the development of horticulture and agriculture, and there fore are in place in the book. The limits of the book are necessarily indefinite and subject to personal judgment. What species may be omitted without loss and what should be added will develop with the use of the book; the results may be recorded in a subsequent edition.
