Book Synopsis International Handbook of Reading Education by : Betty J. Eller
Download or read book International Handbook of Reading Education written by Betty J. Eller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1992-07-27 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As major political and social changes continue to sweep through the countries of the world, and more and more nations move toward forms of social democracy, the importance of being able to read has taken on a new urgency. The burden of government, commerce, education, and social welfare is moving increasingly toward the individual, and with it the need to turn basic reading skills into the sophisticated ability to analyze, comprehend, and debate the whole world of language in front of him. This book offers an opportunity to see how the process of learning to read is being handled in a broad cross-section of countries in the world, representing the First, Second, and Third Worlds. Each of the twenty-six country surveys has been written by an international scholar indigenous to that land and follows the same basic pattern in examining reading education. Following a brief introduction to the nation and its particular educational characteristics, ten reading-associated factors are fully discussed and analyzed. These factors include the language of the country in question, its reading policy, the goals of reading, illiteracy, issues pertaining to the rate and diagnosis of reading disabilities, reading readiness programs, the teacher qualification procedure, the source and availability of materials in reading, the financing of reading education, and research thrusts in the field of reading. Each chapter then concludes with a summary and brief bibliography of important reference sources within that country. This unique study will be an essential reference tool for students and practitioners in-the fields of education and reading literacy, as well as a valuable addition to both public and academic libraries.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Regional Design by : Michael Neuman
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Regional Design written by Michael Neuman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-14 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Regional Design explores contemporary research, policy, and practice that highlight critical aspects of strategy-making, planning, and designing for contemporary regions—including city regions, bioregions, delta regions, and their hybrids. As accelerating urbanization and globalization combine with other forces such as the demand for increasing returns on investment capital, migration, and innovation, they yield cities that are expanding over ever-larger territories. Moreover, these polycentric city regions themselves are agglomerating with one another to create new territorial mega-regions. The processes that beget these novel regional forms produce numerous and significant effects, positive and negative, that call for new modes of design and management so that the urban places and the lives and well-being of their inhabitants and businesses thrive sustainably into the future. With international case studies from leading scholars and practitioners, this book is an important resource not just for students, researchers, and practitioners of urban planning, but also policy makers, developers, architects, engineers, and anyone interested in the broader issues of urbanism.

Book Synopsis The Transmission of Anglo-Norman by : Richard P. Ingham
Download or read book The Transmission of Anglo-Norman written by Richard P. Ingham and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation contributes to issues in the study of second language transmission by considering the well-documented historical case of Anglo-Norman. Within a few generations of the establishment of this variety, its phonology diverged sharply from that of continental French, yet core syntactic distinctions continued to be reliably transmitted. The dissociation of phonology from syntax transmission is related to the age of exposure to the language in the experience of ordinary users of the language. The input provided to children acquiring language in a naturalistic communicative setting, even though one of a school institution, enabled them to acquire target-like syntactic properties of the inherited variety. In addition, it allowed change to take place along the lines of transmission by incrementation. A linguistic environment combining the 'here-and-now' aspects of ordinary first language acquisition with the growing cognitive complexity of an educational meta-language appears to have been adequate for this variety to be transmitted as a viable entity that encoded the public life of England for centuries.

Book Synopsis International Perspectives on Teachers Living with Curriculum Change by : Martin Wedell
Download or read book International Perspectives on Teachers Living with Curriculum Change written by Martin Wedell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book gives a voice to English language teachers faced with the challenges posed by English language curriculum change. As a core component of national state system curricula in virtually every country in the world, there has nevertheless been little research exploring how the millions of English teachers worldwide navigate the challenges posed by such curriculum changes. This volume includes eleven stories from teachers based across every continent, providing a global glimpse of how national English curriculum change projects have been experienced by classroom teachers who are commonly (if erroneously) viewed as mostly responsible for its implementation success or failure. The final chapter synthesises these experiences and suggests wider implications for the development of curriculum change planning processes, and how they might better support teachers’ attempts to achieve curriculum goals. Edited and authored by leading experts in the field, this ground-breaking collection will be of interest to students and scholars of English language teaching, teacher education, curriculum change and education policy.”
