Previous studies hint at a possible mediation - by organisational innovation - of the relationship between intellectual capital and a firm's performance. Despite considerable research on its single elements, little is currently known about the effects of IC as a whole on SMEs, especially in Australia. This research investigated the contribution of IC to competitive advantage, based on the resource-based view (RBV) and the dynamic capability view (DCV). These are the acknowledged platforms for investigating competitiveness. This study also explored the strategic links between IC, and organisational innovation, and SME performance in Australia. Mixed methods of data collection were employed, the better to assess the relevance of the proposed integrated model. Quantitative and qualitative research methods differ in terms of their analytical objectives and types of data, and by using a mixture of methods this research obtains a more complete overview of the issues being addressed.

In addition, little research has been conducted to explore the internal and external drivers of innovation in SME operations, adopting an integrative and comprehensive approach that takes into account the dynamic global climate.This study seeks to contribute knowledge on innovation theory, practice and evidence from the Australian socioeconomic context to business and innovation management literature. The Australian economy is regarded as greatly diverse and is dominated by SMEs. The study contributes to filling the gap in strategy-focused research in the domain of SMEs. Through government support, the economy has achieved significant levels of industrialisation, modernisation, and steady economic growth. The present research problem is to identify the innovation enabling and deterring factors, and to explore strategic orientation and its influence on innovation and firm growth performance. In addition, this study seeks to offer insights on innovation development in Australia, to determine the impact of innovation practices on SME business growth performance and attain a greater understanding of SME innovation practices and capacities. The hypothetical conceptual model developed in this study was based on a systematic review of innovation management literature for the construction of an innovation-driven organisation that aims to empower its knowledge workers to innovate, thus unleashing organisational innovation and improving the governance and measurement of innovation. It also provides answers to recent calls to differentiate between components of a firm's strategic orientations. The study has also developed a behavioural model for strategic planning and investigating the desirability and feasibility for Australian SMEs to engage in innovative activity. It addresses the concern that more evidence is needed to understand the impact of innovation practices on innovation engagement in SMEs.The dataset used in this study comes from the Business Longitudinal Survey (BLS) for Australian SMEs over the financial years 2006/07 - 2010/11, which is the main statistical instrument of Australia. The BLS was developed for monitoring a wide range of business characteristics and behaviours, which it links to performance over time. The results suggest that: first, certain strategic orientations (future orientation, technology orientation, collaboration orientation, risk orientation, and innovativeness orientation) tend to have a significant influence on innovation practices; second, the perception of moderate barriers (financial, knowledge, and environmental) could be beneficial for stimulating innovation activities; and third, innovation practices tend to have a significant influence on business growth performance. Furthermore, a moderating effect of IS integration in the relationship between collaborative network and innovation performance is found.The results of this study present several interesting findings and provide significant contributions. It is highly probable that this is the first empirical study exploring SMEs' innovation practices in the Australian economy and the impact of these practices on business growth performance. The present study further enriches business and innovation management literature with both managerial and academic implications, because it offers empirical evidence of the relationship between innovation practices, strategic orientations, and business growth performance. It finally provides a practical model at the strategic level of the firm with dynamic capabilities that SMEs can use as guiding principles for formulating innovation strategies.

It provides a set of guiding principles at each phase that enables the management of the smaller companies to develop or select appropriate tools and methods for their innovation requirements. The framework is a significant contribution in this area of research as it was developed specifically for the needs of manufacturing SMEs. SMEs play a crucial role in the national and global economy. They are responsible for most net job creation in OECD countries and make important contributions to productivity and economic growth. However, they are also very vulnerable to changes in their business environment as they have very limited resources and capabilities. In the current business climate, characterised by uncertainty, global competition and high levels of technological change, most SMEs find themselves unable to cope with the requirement to be in a constant state of change and innovation. Effective management of change and innovation is a critical capability that all manufacturing companies must possess to survive and compete. However, in spite of the importance of SMEs in the economy and their known limitations, there are very few frameworks, tools and methods developed to enable them to effectively manage innovation. It is argued that there are two main reasons for this. The first reason is the absence of in-depth understanding of the specific characteristics of SMEs that govern the dynamics of innovation in their organisations. Second, is that after several decades of research on management of technology and innovation, there is still no comprehensive model of identifying the determinants of successful innovation, especially in the area of system and process innovation. This study overcomes these issues by firstly adopting an action research approach, through which the researcher was embedded in a manufacturing SME for several years and took part in numerous system and process improvement initiatives. This provided the researcher first hand with a large body of contextual information that is crucial for understanding a complex phenomenon such as system and process innovation. In order to make this knowledge useful for the development of the framework, a holistic model of organisational determinants of successful innovation was constructed, based on an extensive systems-based review of the related areas of innovation management literature. The model was used to systematically reflect upon the system and process innovation projects that the researcher had been leading in the case company. The result was the identification of specific characteristics of manufacturing SMEs that impact the success of system and process innovation. These were categorised into three groups. The first group are those characteristics that influence the strategic aspect of innovation in SMEs. The second consists of characteristics that affect the context in which innovation is to take place, while the third group consists of those that affect how the innovation process is carried out. The framework was therefore structured in three phases in order to address the effect of the above characteristics on innovation in SMEs. Finally, the framework was successfully applied in a manufacturing SME and enabled its managers to apply a strategic approach to system and process innovation. Two system and process innovation programmes were started, which focused on long-term competitiveness of the company while addressing the short-term needs of the business. These were "Environmentally Benign Furniture Design and Production" and "Customer Driven Furniture Design and Production". The framework proved instrumental in promoting a systematic approach to strategic development and creative problem solving. It was helpful in directing the innovation drive of the owner/manager towards strategic decision making, while complementing his knowledge with strategically significant information from the company's business environment. Moreover, the preparation phase of the framework provided a structured and systematic approach to understand the drivers and obstacles of innovation, and to develop mechanisms to use the drivers and overcome the obstacles. It also proved helpful in identifying sources of knowledge and setting up mechanisms to acquire, store and disseminate knowledge.
