This book was released on 2021-07-09 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radically enhance your progress in organic synthesis Radical chemistry has undergone a renaissance in recent years. These two volumes will make the key developments accessible to a broad range of organic chemists. They cover both the generation of radicals and their use. The editors, Prof. Louis Fensterbank and Dr. Cyril Ollivier, are experts in radical chemistry and its application to organic synthesis. Find out all about the generation and use of radicals The two-volume set describes the fundamentals of radical chemistry and its application in organic synthesis. It includes practical examples of the generation of a variety of organic radicals. You will find critically reviewed, reliable and ready-to-use information on the use of radicals in: "single-electron transfer" "hydrogen-atom transfer" radical functionalization and cross-coupling processes. By understanding the fundamental reactivities of radicals, they can be harnessed for atom-efficient and green reactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free radicals, which are key intermediates in many thermal, photochemical and radiation processes, are important for a proper understanding of fundamental natural processes and the successful development of organic syntheses. After about one decade volume II/18 serves as a supplement and extension to volume II/13 and covers rate constants and other kinetic data of free radical reactions in liquids. Furthermore II/18 contains new chapters on reactions of radicals in excited states and of carbenes, nitrenes and analogues. Selected species in aqueous solutions for which other compilations are available were deliberately omitted as before, and for the same reason electron transfer equilibria of organic radicals were not covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activation and Functionalization of C-H Bonds explores recent developments in the reaction chemistry of solution-phase transition-metal based systems with simple hydrocarbons and with more complex organic molecules. More than 20 internationally leading research groups contributed to this volume, and their chapters cover such topics as fundamental theoretical and mechanistic studies of C-H bond activation by metal complexes, catalytic systems for alkane functionalization, and new applications in synthetic organic chemistry. An introductory chapter offers an overview of stoichiometric and catalytic reactions of C-H bonds with transition metal complexes. The C-H bond is the most widespread linkage in organic chemistry, present in virtually every organic molecule. Unfortunately, C-H bonds are famously resistant to selective chemical transformations. The development of methods for their selective transformations has enormous potential value in fields ranging from the chemistry of fuels (for example, the conversion of methane to methanol) to the synthesis of the most complex organic molecules.

Book excerpt: In this comprehensive and stimulating text and reference, the authors have succeeded in combining experimental data with current hypotheses and theories to explain the complex physiological functions of plants. For every student, teacher and researcher in the plant sciences it offers a solid basis for an in-depth understanding of the entire subject area, underpinning up-to-date research in plant physiology. The authors vividly explain current research by references to experiments, they cite original literature in figures and tables, and, at the end of each chapter, list recent references that are relevant for a deeper analysis of the topic. In addition, an abundance of detailed and informative illustrations complement the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of the reversible red far-red control of plant growth and development and the subsequent in vivo identification and isolation of the photoreceptor pigment, phyto chrome, constitutes one of the great achievements in modern biology. It was primarily a group of investigators at the Plant Industry Station, Beltsville, Mary land, headed by the botanist H.A. BORTHWICK and the physical chemist S.B. HENDRICKS, who made the basic discoveries and developed a theoretical framework on which the current progress in the field of phytochrome is still largely based. While the earlier development of the phytochrome concept has been covered by a num ber of excellent articles by the original investigators [104,105,33,238] as well as by others who joined the field of phytochrome research later [72, 109, 219], a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of photomorphogenesis is not available at present. Since it seems to be needed for teaching as well as for researchers I have tried to summarize the present state of the field, reviewing the historical aspects of the phytochrome story only insofar as they are required to understand the present situation. The emphasis of my treatment will be on developmental physiology ("photomorphogenesis") rather than on phytochrome per se.

Book excerpt: While the theoretical basis of centrifugal separations remains the same, recent years have seen dramatic changes in both the design of centrifuges and the range of people that use them. This book reflects these changing uses of preparative centrifuges by providing detailed protocols covering all of the different types of separation from DNA to cells. Guidelines are also given to help the reader devise new types of separation protocols. The book includes program source code for calculation and simulation programs that are invaluable for quantitative centrifugation methods. In addition, this volume contains extensive appendices of valuable data that are required by everyone using centrifuges as part of their research work. Preparative Centrifugation: A Practical Approach contains a wealth of guidelines, protocols, and practical advice that will be of direct use to experienced researchers and novices alike in virtually every area of biological research.
