The topic is introduced with a general overview of Iranian history with particular emphasis on military history. Drawing from more than 500 sources, this study also includes an overview of the development of historical copper, bronze, iron, and steel weapons such as swords, bows, maces, axes, shields, armor, and more. In-depth information regarding the classification of the various artifacts is also presented, and different signatures on swords and other weapons are illustrated within the treatise, exploring each item in its cultural setting. Book Synopsis Mithraic Societies: From Brotherhood to Religion's Adversary - (b&w) by : Abolala Soudavar
Download or read book Mithraic Societies: From Brotherhood to Religion's Adversary - (b&w) written by Abolala Soudavar and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although by its title, this book seems to be about a specialized topic, the spread of Mithraic societies and its avatars, in time and geographical expanse, much enhances its relevancy. From Roman legionaries to chivalry orders, from dervish circles to guild organizations, and from Freemasons to French revolutionaries, the hierarchy of Mithraic societies, their initiation rites, and their oaths of secrecy, provided a model for brotherhood organization that was efficient, but also flexible; they could adapt their philosophy to the prevailing politico-religion conditions of the day, because they did not worship any particular god, but could also be comrades in arms with nascent religious movements, such as with Christianity. Mithra was the initial guarantor of their oath, and if need be it could be replaced by Jesus, Allah or any other divinity. Their "religion" was their brotherhood, and as such they usually provided a counter-balance to the power elite, and had the potential to become politically active.

Book Synopsis The Sword in the Age of Chivalry by : Ewart Oakeshott
Download or read book The Sword in the Age of Chivalry written by Ewart Oakeshott and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resplendent image of the medieval knight is concentrated in the symbolism of his sword. The straight, two-edged, cross-hilted knightly sword of the European middle ages was an object of vital importance, a lethal weapon on the battlefield and a badge of chivalry in that complex social code. Ewart Oakeshott draws on his extensive research and expert eye (and hand, for he has a special sense for the feel of a sword) to develop a typology for and recount the history of the sword, from the knightly successors of the Viking weapon to the emergence of the Renaissance sword - that is, roughly from 1050 to 1550. Within this time-span, two distinct groups of swords successively evolved. Problems of dating are acute, and evidence is adduced from literature and art as well as from archaeology, for a sword (or some parts of a sword) could have been in use several generations after it first saw battle. To deal with such overlap, Ewart Oakeshott develops, refines and illustrates a detailed typology of swords which takes in entire swords, pommel-forms, cross-guards, and the grip and scabbard.

Book Synopsis Divine Pleasures by : Terence McInerney
Download or read book Divine Pleasures written by Terence McInerney and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the finest holdings of Indian art in the West, the Kronos Collections are particularly distinguished for paintings made between the sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries for the Indian royal courts in Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills. These outstanding works, many of which are published and illustrated here for the first time, are characterized by their brilliant colors and vivid, powerful depictions of scenes from Hindu epics, mystical legends, and courtly life. They also present a new way of seeking the divine through a form of personal devotion—known as bhakti—that had permeated India’s Hindu community. While explaining the gods, demons, lovers, fantastical creatures, and mystical symbols that are central to literature and worship, this publication celebrates the diverse styles and traditions of Indian painting. Divine Pleasures features an informative entry for each work and two essays by scholar Terence McInerney that together outline the history of Indian painting and the Rajput courts, providing fresh insights and interpretations. Also included are a personal essay by expert and collector Steven M. Kossak and an examination of Hindu epic and myth in Mughal painting, which lays important foundations for Rajput painting, by curator Navina Najat Haidar. Through their research and observations, the authors deepen our understanding and underscore the significance of Indian painting. Divine Pleasures presents a nuanced view of a way of life intimately tied to the seasons, the arts, and the divine.

Download or read book Jandavlattepa written by Ladislav Stančo and published by Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current publication presents results of the Czech-Uzbekistani archaeological expedition in southern Uzbekistan, particularly on the site of Jandavlattepa. This collaboration originated in 2001 as a joint project of the Archaeological Institute of Uzbekistan in Samarqand and the Institute for Classical Archaeology, Charles University in Prague. The pilot season took place the next year, in 2002. Since then, every year till 2006, a four to six-week-long excavation campaign under the direction of Kazim Abdullaev and Ladislav Stančo has been organised and a huge amount of archaeological material and data has been collected. This volume should be a starting issue of a number publications which shall present this data. This publication has been divided into three parts. The first part contains a brief general description of the site and the history of its excavation, as well as geographical and topographical notes. The second and also core part contains a description of the archaeological situations in various sectors of the site. Sector 20, i.e. the citadel, is brought into special focus. The third part of the publication consists of studies devoted to various groups of finds: coins, textile-making implements, weapons and tools, jewellery and clay figurines and appliqués. A list of all small finds has been attached to the end of the book, with references to the form of depicting them either as a drawing or a photograph, and with reference to those places in the text, where special attention is paid to these finds.
Book Synopsis Coins, Art, and Chronology by : Michael Alram
Download or read book Coins, Art, and Chronology written by Michael Alram and published by Austrian Academy of Sciences. This book was released on 2010 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pre-Islamic history of southern Central Asia--modern Afghanistan, Pakistan, northern India and the surrounding areas--continues to pose challenging problems that can be solved only through interdisciplinary efforts. In the tradition of "Coins, Art and Chronology" (1999), this volume comprises 24 articles by leading experts in the fields of history, art history, numismatics, archaeology and linguistics in order to document the current state of research and presents the results of two international conferences at Kyoto and Vienna in autumn 2008. While the first "Coins, Art and Chronology" concentrated on the period of the Kushanas and the Sasanians, this volume explores the post-Kushana period and questions concerning the Hunnic and Turkic phases in the history of the region, the main focus of most of the contributions. The volume is published within the framework of the National Research Network "The Cultural History of the Western Himalaya from the 8th Century," financed by the Austrian Science Funds.

Book Synopsis Studies in the Chronology of the Bactrian Documents from Northern Afghanistan by : Nicholas Sims-Williams
Download or read book Studies in the Chronology of the Bactrian Documents from Northern Afghanistan written by Nicholas Sims-Williams and published by Austrian Academy of Sciences Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 150 documents in Bactrian, the chief administrative language of pre-Islamic Afghanistan, have come to light during the last twenty-five years. These documents include letters, legal contracts, economic documents and a few Buddhist texts; many of them bear dates in the so-called "Bactrian era", which is also known from a few inscriptions, such as the Tochi valley inscriptions in Pakistan, but whose starting-point is controversial. The Bactrian documents have the potential to transform our knowledge of the history of the region during the 4th to 8th centuries CE, a period for which we have few contemporary records, but before they can be fully exploited as historical sources it is necessary to establish their relative and absolute chronology. The present volume aims to fulfil this need. In Part 1 we consider the dated documents, discussing the nature of the Bactrian calendar and the epoch of the Bactrian era, and concluding with a conspectus in which all the attested dates are converted to Julian dates on the basis of the facts and arguments presented. In Part 2 we turn to the equally important undated documents, systematically weighing up all types of evidence, whether historical, prosopographical, palaeographical, linguistic or orthographic, which may have a bearing on their dating. Part 3 provides a handy check-list of our conclusions, while the Appendices provide additional and supporting material including editions of the Tochi valley inscriptions and of a Pahlavi letter which was purchased together with the Bactrian documents. This book will be required reading for scholars and students of the pre-Islamic and early Islamic history of Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia. It will also be a useful resource for those interested in the languages, religions and numismatics of the region.

Renowned to this day as a founding scholar in an extraordinarily wide variety of disciplines, as well as being an explorer of hitherto largely unknown lands, such as Tibet, Tucci gained a deep knowledge of Asia through a familiarity with its people, places and literature. His contribution to modern scholarship is nothing less than remarkable. The volume reflects the broad variety of topics in which Tucci himself displayed deep interest and serves as an homage to his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, the Arab nomads who inhabited a great stretch of the Near East from Aleppo in northern Syria to the southern shores of the Arabian peninsula continued a way of life virtually unchanged from the time of the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. Wars and raids were carried out by tribesmen armed like their ancestors with sword, mace and lance. Firearms came slowly to the Bedouin, and multishot weapons were very rare until the end of the 19th century.
