Book Synopsis Orchid Biology: Reviews and Perspectives X by : Tiiu Kull
Download or read book Orchid Biology: Reviews and Perspectives X written by Tiiu Kull and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-21 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As stated many times before the purpose of Orchid Biology, Reviews and Perspectives (OB) is to present reviews on all aspects of orchids. The aim is not to balance every volume, but to make a balanced and wide ranging presentation of orchids in the series as a whole. The chapters in this, the last volume of the series, range over a number of topics which were not covered before. Singapore is justly famed for its orchids. They can be seen on arrival (or dep- ture) in its modern, highly efficient and comfortable Changi Airport and on the way from it to town. Vanda Miss Joaquim, the first hybrid to come from Singapore became its National Flower. This natural hybrid can be seen on its currency, stamps, and public and private decorations. Many excellent breeders, starting with Prof. Eric Holttum who bred the first man made hybrid (Spathoglottis Primrose), produced numerous magnificent hybrids and won countless awards in Singapore and elsewhere. These hybrids served to enrich the country’s orchid mystique. In the opening chapter of this volume Dr. Teoh Eng Soon (Western style: Eng Soon Teoh), himself a prize winning orchid breeder, grower and author writes about some of the breeders who contributed to the Singapore orchid fame. Prof. Hans Fitting was one of the best known plant physiologists of his time. As a young man he studied the effects of pollen on orchid flowers.
Book Synopsis Bering Glacier by : Robert Allan Shuchman
Download or read book Bering Glacier written by Robert Allan Shuchman and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2010 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bering Glacier is the largest surging glacier in the world, having surged at least six times in the last 150 years. With the glacier advancing and retreating as much as 10 km over a surge cycle, it is one of the most physically and biologically dynamic places on Earth. This monograph presents the results of a comprehensive and diverse series of field studies and science investigations at Bering Glacier. The results reported are from a wide range of disciplines, including glaciology, geology, paleogeology, hydrology, limnology, oceanography, tectonics, geomorphology, geophysics, meteorology, remote sensing, climate change, anthropology, and ecological studies pertaining to vegetation, fish, and marine mammals. The compilation of these individual studies into a single publication allows for a more complete understanding of how the approximately 5,000 km2 Bering Glacier system plays a major role in the greater southeastern coastal region of Alaska and through its wastage, its impact on the circulation of the northeast Pacific Ocean and on the global sea level.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Himalaya: Its Scope and Protection by : KULBHUSHAN SHARMA
Download or read book Rethinking Himalaya: Its Scope and Protection written by KULBHUSHAN SHARMA and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Himalaya has profoundly shaped the cultures of the Indian subcontinent, with many Himalayan peaks considered sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism. Some of the world's major rivers – the Indus, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra rise in the Himalayas. These rivers have abundant seasonal and annual water supply. The mountain ranges and river basins share trans-boundary connectedness. Still, mountain people living on hills have limited access to water for drinking and agriculture. Covering around 27% of the Earth’s land surface, the mountains contribute to the sustenance and wellbeing of over half the human population for water, food, and clean energy. Yet mountains are under threat from climate change, land degradation, overexploitation, and natural disasters, with potentially far-reaching and devastating consequences, both for mountain communities and downstream populations. The book covers interdisciplinary domains of science, humanities and commerce, hence beneficial for all types of readers equally. Promotion of awareness and education on conservation and sustainable utilization of bioresources and strengthening networks, coordination with the help of central government departments, state governments, NGOs and local institutions is urgently needed.

Book Synopsis Filicineae, Gymnospermae and Other Monocots Excluding Cyperaceae by : Robert H. Mohlenbrock
Download or read book Filicineae, Gymnospermae and Other Monocots Excluding Cyperaceae written by Robert H. Mohlenbrock and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2006-03-24 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second in a series of four illustrated guides to identifying aquatic and standing water plants in the central Midwest, this convenient reference volume includes descriptions, nomenclature, ecological information, and identification keys to plants in all of the monocot families except sedges—which are covered in the first volume in the series—that are found in Kentucky (except for the Cumberland region), Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. Monocots covered in this volume include ferns, conifers, grasses, rushes, orchids, duckweeds, irises, sweet flags, arrowheads, aroids, flowering rushes, pipeworts, frog-bits, arrowgrasses, naiads, pickerelweeds, pondweeds, bur reeds, cattails, and yellow-eyed grasses. Robert H. Mohlenbrock includes three types of plants: submergents, those that spend their entire lives with their vegetative parts either completely submerged or at least floating on the water’s surface; emergents, which are typically rooted underwater with their vegetative parts standing out of water; and a third category of plants that live most of their lives out of water, but which may live in water at least three months a year. With taxa arranged alphabetically, the volume is well organized and easy to use. In addition, basic synonymy, description, distribution, comments, and line drawings show the habits and distinguishing features for each plant. Habitat and nomenclatural notes are also listed, as are the official wetland designations given by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Filicineae, Gymnospermae, and Other Monocots, Excluding Cyperaceae is a useful standard reference for state and federal employees who deal with both aquatic and wetland plants and environmental conservation and mitigation issues. It is furthermore an essential guide for students and instructors in college and university courses focusing on the identification of aquatic and wetland plants.
