The very small stabilizing torque available and the lack of a natural damping mechanism have been recognized as the major problems. The satellite 1963-22A, launched in June 1963, was the first orbiting vehicle to achieve passive gravity-gradient stabilization. A 100-foot extendible boom was used to develop gravity-gradient stabilizing torque. A combination of a lossy spring and magnetic hysteresis rods provided damping. By June 1964 four other satellites had achieved gravity-gradient stabilization. The satellite 1964-26A was similar to 1963-22A except that good damping was achieved with magnetic hysteresis rods alone. The discovery that several slender rods of magnetic material, weighing only 0.6 pounds and entirely passive, would damp gravity-gradient librations by interaction with the earth's magnetic field was a major advance in space technology. The accuracy of vertical stabilization has typically been better than 10 degrees. (Author).

Book excerpt: General analytical methods for predicting planar and three dimensional attitude motion of a gravity gradient spacecraft in an elliptical orbit are developed. Regions of stability from the linearized planar equation of Mathieu form are plotted versus inertia parameters and orbit eccentricity. Similar plots showing the effects of damping are presented. The planar equation for larger eccentricities is examined with asymptotic expansion methods (KBM) for increased accuracy. An analysis based on the Hamiltonian and using canonical transformations and the method of averaging is applied to the three degree of freedom equations. Thirty-two combinations of resonant eigenfrequencies, indicating both nonlinear and parametric resonances, and including six previously shown by Breakwell and Pringle, are found. Nineteen of these combinations lead to unbounded increases in the amplitude of oscillation of one or more of the spacecraft modes. Eight lead to significant interchanges of energy between modes. The remaining five have little effect.

The attitude measuring system aboard the spacecraft is described, and processing of the attitude data is discussed. Description of failures in the attitude determination system and discussion of the subsequent effects on the experimental attitude results are included. Experimental attitude results are compared with the results of the digital simulation. General agreement is obtained. (Author).

A characteristic feature is the use of long thin perfectly flexible strings to achieve the desired mass distribution, which eliminates the solar radiation pressure and heating effects inherent in conventional rigid-boom designs. Damping is achieved by articulated hinges and magnetically-anchored viscous fluid dampers. The designs are optimized using a numerical gradient-search technique and considering the time to damp to half amplitude of the least-damped mode as the performance index. The pointing performance is found to be relatively insensitive to parameter variations. Optimized results are presented for a series of constrained satellite configurations. (Author).

Residual spin was removed in 12 days by artificial magnetic hysteresis damping. The four booms of the 'X' configuration were deployed to achieve gravity capture. A sample-and-hold technique was used to damp librations by reacting with the earth's magnetic field. Pitch and roll damped to 20 degree peaks in 9 days. Efforts to obtain better stabilization with the torsion-wire damper-boom system were unsuccessful. Subsequent stabilization with magnetic damping showed one period of exceptionally good results with pitch and roll peaks of only 4 degrees. The satellite tumbled on November 16-17, possibly due to a meteoroid of the Leonid shower. TV cameras of 22 degree and 60 degree fields have provided attitude data. A color filter system in the 22 degree camera has allowed the first color pictures of the full earth image. (Author).
