Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.

Book excerpt: Current technology for solar-electric propulsion is used to assess the potential performance advantages of low-thrust propulsion for an out-of-the-ecliptic mission. Simple normal-to-the-orbit thrust steering is assumed with coast subarcs permitted. The electric spacecraft is launched onto an Earth escape trajectory by an Atlas (SLV3C)-Centaur or a Titan IIIC. Comparisons with a similarly launched uprated Burner II stage reveal that significant performance gains are possible using the electric stage with 250- to 475-day flight times.

Book excerpt: Low-thrust maneuvers are evaluated by calculating changes in the orbital elements with pre-defined steering programs. Four pitch steering cases are considered, where the in-plane acceleration vector is (1) perpendicular to the orbit radius vector, (2) tangent to the orbit path, (3) perpendicular to the major axis of the ellipse, and (4) parallel to the major axis of the ellipse. Discontinuous thrusting is described using perigee- and apogee-centered burn arcs. Expressions are given for the secular rates of change of the orbital elements, which can be integrated numerically or in some instances solved in closed form to yield the AV and trip time. Maneuvers analyzed here include simultaneous eccentricity and inclination changes, adjusting the argument of perigee and right ascension of the ascending node (RAAN), phase shifting with RAAN control, and changes of the semimajor axis and eccentricity due to atmospheric drag. Mission applications are illustrated by orbit insertion at low, medium, and geosynchronous altitudes using chemical and electric propulsion, orbit disposal by re-entry or grave yarding, and controlling the separation distance between a target and a chase satellite in low Earth orbit.

Book excerpt: Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) when used for station keeping and final orbit insertion has been shown to increase a geostationary satellite's payload when launched by existing expendable launch vehicles. In the case of reusable launch vehicles or expendable launch vehicles where an upper stage is an expensive option, this methodology can be modified by using the existing on-board apogee chemical system to perform a perigee burn and then letting the electric propulsion system complete the transfer to geostationary orbit. The elimination of upper stages using on-board chemical and electric propulsion systems was thus examined for GEO spacecraft. Launch vehicle step-down from an Atlas IIAR to a Delta 7920 (no upper stage) was achieved using expanded on-board chemical tanks, 40 kW payload power for electric propulsion, and a 60 day elliptical to GEO SEP orbit insertion. Optimal combined chemical and electric trajectories were found using SEPSPOT. While Hall and ion thrusters provided launch vehicle step-down and even more payload for longer insertion times, NH3 arcjets had insufficient performance to allow launch vehicle step-down. Degradation levels were only 5% to 7% for launch step-down cases using advanced solar arrays. Results were parameterized to allow comparisons for future reusable launch vehicles. Results showed that for an 8 W/kg initial power/launch mass power density spacecraft, 50% to 100% more payload can be launched using this method. Book excerpt: A preliminary investigation of a lunar-comet rendezvous mission using a solar electric propulsion (SEP) spacecraft was performed in two phases. The first phase involved exploration of the moon and the second involved rendezvous with a comet. The initial phase began with a chemical propulsion translunar injection and chemical insertion into a lunar orbit, followed by a low thrust SEP transfer to a circular, polar, low-lunar orbit. After collecting scientific data at the moon, the SEP spacecraft performed a spiral lunar escape maneuver to begin the interplanetary leg of the mission. After escape from the Earth-moon system, the SEP spacecraft maneuvered in interplanetary space and performed a rendezvous with a comet. The immediate goal of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of using a low-thrust SEP spacecraft for orbit transfer to both the moon and a comet. Another primary goal was to develop a computer optimization code which would be robust enough to obtain minimum-fuel rendezvous trajectories for a wide range of comets. Kluever, Craig A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal inplane orbital maneuvers enabling a target spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit to avoid interception by a threat in direct coasting ascent are examined. Given constant magnitude, low thrust electric propulsion, the thrust vector control history is determined to propel the spacecraft to either a maximum or minimum orbit radius in a specified time of flight. The evasive maneuver is studied from two aspects. First, an orthogonality constraint is applied at the final time of the maneuver, such that the target spacecraft's position vector is orthogonal to its velocity vector. This requirement is then removed to allow the spacecraft to travel without influence of a terminal constraint. Results demonstrate the adverse shaping effect the orthogonality constraint applies over the entire evasive maneuver. Upon completion of the evasive maneuver, the spacecraft returns in minimum time to its nominal orbit, in a position as if no evasive thrusting had occurred. Results show the time required to rendezvous with the nominal orbit may be significantly greater than the time of flight of the evasive maneuver. Optimal control is applied to formulate the evasive and rendezvous maneuvers using Euler-Lagrange theory and the calculus or variations. The behavior of the Lagrange costates is examined in terms of their effect upon solution convergence. The resulting two point boundary value problem is solved by numerical methods to yield the optimal spaceflight trajectory.
