Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students, Second Edition, provides an introduction to the basic concepts of space mechanics. These include vector kinematics in three dimensions; Newton's laws of motion and gravitation; relative motion; the vector-based solution of the classical two-body problem; derivation of Kepler's equations; orbits in three dimensions; preliminary orbit determination; and orbital maneuvers. The book also covers relative motion and the two-impulse rendezvous problem; interplanetary mission design using patched conics; rigid-body dynamics used to characterize the attitude of a space vehicle; satellite attitude dynamics; and the characteristics and design of multi-stage launch vehicles. Each chapter begins with an outline of key concepts and concludes with problems that are based on the material covered. This text is written for undergraduates who are studying orbital mechanics for the first time and have completed courses in physics, dynamics, and mathematics, including differential equations and applied linear algebra. Graduate students, researchers, and experienced practitioners will also find useful review materials in the book. - NEW: Reorganized and improved discusions of coordinate systems, new discussion on perturbations and quarternions - NEW: Increased coverage of attitude dynamics, including new Matlab algorithms and examples in chapter 10 - New examples and homework problems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmos 236 (1968-70A) was launched on 27 August 1968 into a near-circular orbit of inclination 56 deg and is expected to decay during late 1989. The orbit has been determined from observations for 77 epochs between July 1983 and October 1984 over the time interval when the orbit was expected to be significantly influenced by the effects of 15th-order resonance with the Earth's gravitational field: Exact resonance occurred on 13 March 1984. The observations numbered over 4700, including 284 from the Hewitt cameras which are sited at Herstmonceux in England and at Siding Spring in Australia. The orbital accuracy achieved was fairly consistent throughout, with the standard deviation in orbital inclination and eccentricity corresponding on average to positional accuracies of 85 m and 65 m respectively. Analysis of the changes in inclination and in eccentricity at resonance has given values of three pairs of lumped harmonics of order 15 and three pairs of eccentricity. The values from inclination had standard deviations equivalent to accuracies in geoid height of 0.6 cm and 2.0 cm for orders 15 and 30 respectively while the equivalent accuracies for the values from eccentricity were 1.6 cm and 6.0 cm. Keywords: Orbital determination; Orbit analysis; Geopotential harmonics; Satellite orbits: Resonance. (EDC).

Book excerpt: While navigation systems for the determination of the orbit of the Global Position System (GPS) have proven to be very effective, the current issues involve lowering the error in the GPS satellite ephemerides below their current level. In this document, the results of an orbit determination covariance assessment are provided. The analysis is intended to be the baseline orbit determination study comparing the benefits of adding laser ranging measurements from various numbers of ground stations. Results are shown for two starting longitude assumptions of the satellite location and for nine initial covariance cases for the GPS satellite state vector. Welch, Bryan W. This publication contains the proceedings of the meetings of the COSPAR Technical Panel on Satellite Dynamics which took place during the 31st Cospar Scientific Assembly held in Birmingham (UK) in July 1996. The 20 papers cover a variety of topics relating mainly to satellite orbit determination and analysis. A group of papers discusses orbit determination of low earth orbiters, in particular earth observation and research missions having high accuracy and using various various types of tracking support (data relay satellites, PRARE, laser, GPS). Two papers on geostationary orbits describe a project for their use in time-transfer and their evolution with time. Modelling problems associated with surface forces are analysed by a number of authors (an overview paper on Lageos perturbation models; the impact of surface forces on gravity models covering penumbra affects, numerical integration and attitude motion). One paper describes a visualisation

Book excerpt: The problem of orbit determination by radar tracking data is broken into its constituent parts, which are then subjected to detailed exami nation. Typical results are presented and dis cussed as a method of arriving at general conclu sions. The behavior of orbital errors is inter preted in terms of the influence of their sources and the nature of their propagation. The emphasis of this analysis is on why orbital errors behave as they do, how well can we expect to determine orbits, and how can we do better. The conclu sions are based on the results of a large number of digital simulations with the Aerospace TRACE program and the General Electric Pat-B program, plus limited experience in the reduction of ''live'' data from the SCF net. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aspects of accurate determination of Earth satellite orbits by the Minimum Variance Method are presented. In addition, techniques for the determination of the associated physical constants, such as the coefficients in the Earth's gravitational potential, exospheric temperature, etc., are developed. A method for determination of the state transition matrix is presented. Also included are a review of the time systems employed in satellite orbit determination and a short discussion of the types of observations. The mathematical model of the dynamical system includes nine zonal harmonics and up to the fourth order tesseral harmonics of the Earth's gravitational potential. Atmospheric drag effects are included on the assumption that the atmosphere rotates with the angular velocity of the Earth. First order solar and lunar gravitational attractions and solar radiation pressure are also treated. The satellite orbits are integrated in a reference system which considers the precession and nutation of the Earth. Rectangular coordinate systems are used throughout the development. (Author).
