Book Synopsis Livio Orazio Valentini by : Robert E Alexander
Download or read book Livio Orazio Valentini written by Robert E Alexander and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated biography celebrating the life and legacy of a renowned Italian artist In this illustrated biography of the late Italian artist, Livio Orazio Valentini: An Artist's Spiritual Odyssey, Robert E. Alexander and John A. Elliott celebrate the life and legacy of the renowned painter and sculptor while acknowledging his special relationship with the people of Aiken, South Carolina. Born to a poor family in 1920, Valentini lived most of his life in Orvieto, Italy. With no money for a formal education, he became a self-taught artist. At the age of twenty, Valentini was called into military service during World War II. After being captured by the Germans, he was confined in Buchenwald and other concentration camps, where he endured two years of physical labor. For Valentini the confinement was life-changing; he experienced a spiritual awakening that became a lifelong odyssey reflected in his art and teaching. Valentini's art and even his existence centered on his efforts to find freedom. His paintings, charcoal sketches, and sculptures formed from terracotta, forged iron, tile, or stone are often a statement on the human condition, germination and rebirth, and the negativity and violence of humanity. Valentini often spoke about injustice and oppression through the metaphor of a caged bird, explaining how compassion could overcome cruelty and art could bring healing and hope to conquer fear. While Valentini's art was well known in Italy and other European countries, it was relatively unknown in the United States until the 1990s, when Aiken, South Carolina, and Orvieto, Italy, became linked after a chance meeting between Valentini and a fellow Rotary Club member who was vacationing in Orvieto. The connection blossomed into a multifaceted exchange program for students and citizens that celebrates culture and art, including Valentini's. Erika Pauli Bizzarri, who offered editorial assistance on this volume, has worked as a research and translation assistant on countless volumes including McGraw Hill's English edition of Encyclopedia of World Art. She taught art history at Gonzaga University in Florence, Italy.

Book Synopsis Katlick School - Sante D'Orazio by : Sante D'Orazio
Download or read book Katlick School - Sante D'Orazio written by Sante D'Orazio and published by teNeues. This book was released on 2006 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is something powerfully erotic about Catholic schoolgirl uniforms. The blazer or sweater, the immaculate white shirt, the pleated skirt, the knee socks and athletic shoes are the stuff of legend. It's a charming fetish, as psycho-sexually resonant as the black motorcycle jacket or the nurse's uniform. Intended to bring equal status to the student body, and to induce its wearers to behave, the uniform often embodies a nascent rebellion against sexual repression. With Katlick School, Sante D'Orazio has produced a witty visual narrative of flirtation, starring a beautiful Latina schoolgirl named Kat. She holds her notebook like a shield to ward off advances. But with her skirt hiked up and snaps--not buttons--on her shirt, there's a hint of come-hither. We soon discover that the pleated skirt conceals "Snoopy" bikini underwear and a tattoo. Kat is willing to trade her trainers for thigh high spike heeled boots--and as the fantasy unfolds--we get to see her entirely out of uniform. Obviously, she is committed to rounding out her education As the Red Hot Chili Peppers sang, "Catholic school girls rule!" Sante D'Orazio's work has appeared in many top magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Allure, Interview, and GQ. His previous publications include A Private View (foreword by Francesco Clemente), Photographs (foreword by John Yau) and Pam: American Icon with text by Glenn O'Brien, Jeff Koons and Richard Prince. Reminiscent of Araki and Helmut Newton at their best, Katlick School is a masterpiece of erotic art A taut and well-told visual narrative, both witty and sensual 76 colour & 54 duotone photos

Book Synopsis Monstrous Adversary by : Alan H. Nelson
Download or read book Monstrous Adversary written by Alan H. Nelson and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elizabethan Court poet Edward de Vere has, since 1920, lived a notorious second, wholly illegitimate life as the putative author of the poems and plays of William Shakespeare. The work reconstructs Oxford’s life, assesses his poetic works, and demonstrates the absurdity of attributing Shakespeare’s works to him. The first documentary biography of Oxford in over seventy years, Monstrous Adversary seeks to measure the real Oxford against the myth. Impeccably researched and presenting many documents written by Oxford himself, Nelson’s book provides a unique insight into Elizabethan society and manners through the eyes of a man whose life was privately scandalous and richly documented.
Book Synopsis Operatic Pasticcios in 18th-Century Europe by : Berthold Over
Download or read book Operatic Pasticcios in 18th-Century Europe written by Berthold Over and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Early Modern times, techniques of assembling, compiling and arranging pre-existing material were part of the established working methods in many arts. In the world of 18th-century opera, such practices ensured that operas could become a commercial success because the substitution or compilation of arias fitting the singer's abilities proved the best recipe for fulfilling the expectations of audiences. Known as »pasticcios« since the 18th-century, these operas have long been considered inferior patchwork. The volume collects essays that reconsider the pasticcio, contextualize it, define its preconditions, look at its material aspects and uncover its aesthetical principles.

Book Synopsis Orazio Gentileschi and the Poetic Tradition in Caravaggesque Painting by : R. Ward Bissell
Download or read book Orazio Gentileschi and the Poetic Tradition in Caravaggesque Painting written by R. Ward Bissell and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first comprehensive examination of Gentileschi's art and its pan-European influence, this interpretive study reveals how his art responded to changing artistic tastes and sociocultural influences and dispels the myth that his exquisite paintings came only from "the tip of his brush." It does so by addressing his deliberate stylistic/expressive decisions in considering subject matter, didactic function, scale, medium, physical location, and patronage. Orazio Gentileschi is presented here as the foremost painter among Caravaggio's Roman "followers," and one of the great Italian painters of the seventeenth century. Much of the text is built around events in Gentileschi's personal life--the departure from Rome of Caravaggio (under indictment for murder); the trial of Agostino Tassi (also a painter) for the rape of Orazio's daughter, Artemisia (a well known artist in her own right); a call to France by Marie de'Medici; an invitation to England from the Duke of Buckingham and King Charles I (where he became an official court painter)--since it was by them, above all, that his career was shaped. The book includes a lengthy Catalogue Raisonne encompassing autograph works, lost works, questionable attributions, and incorrect attributions; appendices summarizing over 100 documents (many not previously cited) concerning Orazio's life and work; and an extensive collection of photographs showing all of Gentileschi's preserved works (canvases, panels, frescoes, mosaics) plus a considerable number of "doubtful" and comparative paintings. Reviewers have commented that "Bissell ... has made recent important archival discoveries"; that "never before have Orazio Gentileschi's work been approached on a comparable level.""--Publisher's description.
