Book excerpt: Orangutan Rescue gives readers a unique insight into the highs and lows of rescuing and rehabilitating this species against all the odds in a remote part of Borneo. With the aid of 145-150 superb photographs, all generously donated, we aim to explain and illustrate why orangutans need our help and to document the creation in 2009 and the development over the next five years of a world-class orangutan rescue and rehabilitation centre in Borneo. We look at the rapid growth of the centre from a mere dream to a reality. We provide an insight into the work of those dedicated people who rescue orangutans from palm oil plantations and from private homes and the skilled veterinary staff who are called upon to treat them and nurse them back to health. The orangutans themselves feature in most photographs. Readers will relish the great many glorious photographs of these great apes , mostly babies and juveniles. We use photos to take readers with us on a journey from the time an orangutan is rescued, treated for any injuries and illnesses at the clinic, then introduced to other baby orangutans, and finally released into protected forest bought especially for them by International Animal Rescue. With ten years' experience rescuing animals in Indonesia, in 2009 British charity International Animal Rescue embarked on its most ambitious project yet. Following numerous reports of mostly baby orangutans being either killed or captured, IAR decided to start from scratch the construction of a dedicated orangutan rescue centre near the small, remote town of Ketapang in West Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). This was a monumental challenge to undertake, both financially and physically. When IAR rose to the challenge in 2009 they thought they might one day be caring for twenty orangutans. Five years later they had 82 in their care with no sign of the numbers decreasing. By that time the IAR team had also rescued and released 38 orangutans that found themselves in conflict with humans. Orangutan Rescue enables readers to see what it really takes to 'save the orangutans'. The personal, unselfish commitment made by so many individuals, the sheer hard work involved, the teamwork, the many and varied skills required. A book for all ages. Nothing like it has been published previously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethical Debates in Orangutan Conservation explores how conservationists decide whether, and how, to undertake rehabilitation and reintroduction (R&R) when rescuing orphaned orangutans. The author demonstrates that exploring ethical dilemmas is crucial for understanding ongoing disagreements about how to help endangered wildlife in an era of anthropogenic extinction. Although R&R might appear an uncontroversial activity, there is considerable debate about how, and why, it ought to be practised. Drawing on in-depth qualitative research with orangutan conservation practitioners, this book examines how ethical trade-offs shape debates about R&R. For example, what if the orphan fails to learn how to be an orangutan again, after years in the company of humans? What if she is sent into the forest only to slowly starve? Would she have been better off in a cage? Could the huge cost of sending a rescued ape back to the wild be better spent on stopping deforestation in the first place? Or do we have a moral obligation to rescue the orphan regardless of cost? This book demonstrates that deconstructing ethical positions is crucial for understanding ongoing disagreements about how to help our endangered great ape kin and other wildlife. Ethical Debates in Orangutan Conservation is essential reading for those interested in conservation and animal welfare, animal studies, primatology, geography, environmental philosophy, and anthropology.

And will he ever return to his jungle home? This startling account of a young orangutan's plight offers a glimpse into animal survival in the wild. The Animal Story series uses a documentary approach to graphically demonstrate survival in the wild. - Dazzling, on-the-scene photographs capture each animal's story. - Fact files offer in-depth information about each animal's habitat. - A glossary and map reveal additional information about each animal. - An index is included. Each book in this new series from Waterbird Books will take a look at a day, year, or season in the life of a wild animal. Book excerpt: This book describes one of our closest relatives, the orangutan, and the only extant great ape in Asia. It is increasingly clear that orangutan populations show extensive variation in behavioural ecology, morphology, life history, and genes. Indeed, on the strength of the latest genetic and morphological evidence, it has been proposed that orangutans actually constitute two species which diverged more than a million years ago - one on the island of Sumatra the other on Borneo, with the latter comprising three subspecies. This book has two main aims. The first is to carefully compare data from every orangutan research site, examining the differences and similarities between orangutan species, subspecies and populations. The second is to develop a theoretical framework in which these differences and similarities can be explained. To achieve these goals the editors have assembled the world's leading orangutan experts to rigorously synthesize and compare the data, quantify the similarities or differences, and seek to explain them. Orangutans is the first synthesis of orangutan biology to adopt this novel, comparative approach. It analyses and compares the latest data, developing a theoretical framework to explain morphological, life history, and behavioural variation. Intriguingly, not all behavioural differences can be attributed to ecological variation between and within the two islands; relative rates of social learning also appear to have been influential. The book also emphasizes the crucial impact of human settlement on orangutans and looks ahead to the future prospects for the survival of critically endangered natural populations.

Book excerpt: The WWF, renowned global nature conservancy brand, greenwashes the ecological crimes of corporations currently destroying the last remaining rainforests and natural habitats on earth; and it accepts their money. This business model of the famous “eco” organization does more to harm nature than to protect it. The WWF cannot refute the facts gathered by esteemed journalist and filmmaker Wilfried Huismann during his two-year research expedition to all corners of the green empire. A journalistic tour de force unearthing the grim secrets behind the warm and cuddly façade of the WWF, Huismann’s exposé went straight to the German bestseller list. The book is now available in English, unabridged and updated. Huismann also dug deep into the early history of the world’s most powerful nature conservancy organization and found several skeletons in the closet: the elite secret club known as “The 1001” and a private military commando unit deployed in Africa against big game poachers – and against black African liberation movements. In the name of environmental protection the WWF has participated in the displacement and cultural extinction of indigenous peoples the world over.
