The faces and stories of Falmouth range from the town's rebellious founding father, Jonathan Hatch, to the much-loved journalist Kitty Baker. Falmouth's past and present have always been marked by exceptional creativity and genius in the arts, sciences, and business. Falmouth, it can be said, is a town with a talent for allowing individuals to follow their unique paths. Witness Rachel Carson pursuing her lost birds and marine life at Woods Hole, Gus Canty pursuing his dreams through town sports, and James Miskell Sr. beginning the 100-year family legacy of Wood Lumber Company. This cavalcade of residents is presented in chapters on Falmouth founders, maritime folk, newcomers, and creative entrepreneurs, and it appeals to all who ever wished to be a part of small-town living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a small farming and fishing town to a growing community, uncover the history of Falmouth through a collection of rarely-seen images. Falmouth began as a farming and fishing town with an active wooden ship-building industry along the Presumpscot River Estuary. The town later developed a number of small villages, each with a post office, stores, and its own school. Following the Civil War, the population dropped and did not begin to increase until the beginning of World War II. Wealthy Portland residents and out-of-state visitors established summer estates in Falmouth Foreside. With the introduction of the automobile and the electric trolley in the early 1900s, the Falmouth Foreside and West Falmouth areas enjoyed an influx of people who could live in Falmouth and work in Portland. After World War II, Falmouth continued to increase in size as roads were improved and more houses were built. Today Falmouth remains a growing community with extensive retail, health, retirement, and service facilities.

Book excerpt: For hundreds of years, people have been drawn to Falmouth, the town of the "shining sea," immortalized by Falmouth native Katherine Lee Bates in her poem America, the Beautiful. Quakers, farmers, whaling captains, marine scientists, Coast Guardsmen, summer residents, Portuguese immigrants from the Azores and Cape Verde Islands, vacationers, and retiring World War II veterans have all found a special place in Falmouth. The photographs in Falmouth celebrate these people and the town they have built. Through the eyes of nearly fifty photographers, these views capture the glorious natural and architectural heritage that has defined the three-hundred-and-forty-year history of this Cape Cod community. From the spare lines of the Quaker meetinghouse and the poorhouse to the spires of churches and the elaborate summer "cottages" of Falmouth's golden age in the 1880s, these vintage photographs offer a rich visual tour through the town's history. Unforgettable images of people-whalers posing for the camera on rare trips home, fishermen returning to port, cranberry pickers, and wealthy summer residents playing croquet in summer whites-combine to show the unique community that is Falmouth.

Topics covered include the church's gathering in 1708, brief biographies of all its ministers, the evolution of its worship buildings, its Paul Revere Bell, its membership list from 1732-1850, scans of pew charts, its development of free pews and free pledging, its relationship with the Barnstable Association of Congregational churches, its first foreign missionaries, its hymnals over three centuries, how it finally came to celebrate Christmas, and much more. This book notes Massachusetts laws and aspects of Massachusetts Congregationalism which played important roles in shaping this church's history. It also includes a chapter on what researchers can expect to find in the records of early Congregational churches and societies in New England. This book has been published in two hardbound volumes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the storied Massachusetts eateries that have left an indelible mark on their customers. Author Christopher Setterlund details the history of the iconic establishments of the Cape, still fresh in the memories of patrons, complete with famous recipes. Bill and Thelma’s was hugely popular with students from the 1950s to the 1970s, often packed with locals after sporting events and dances. Starbuck’s Restaurant in Hyannis featured the Chief Justice Warren Burger Burger and the Larry Bird Burger on its menu and boasted of the soup du jour, “We don't know what it is, but we have it every day.” Opinions differ on how the Reno Diner actually got its name, whether from a broken sign or a local appliance company. This fun collection is sure to arouse some fond memories of these old eateries, and perhaps a little hunger too. “Forty chapters—one each for 39 restaurants and another for some recipes—make for a delicious and nostalgic read.” —Barnstable Patriot

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of covenant was at the heart of early New England society. In this singular book David Weir explores the origins and development of covenant thought in America by analyzing the town and church documents written and signed by seventeenth-century New Englanders. Unmatched in the breadth of its scope, this study takes into account all of the surviving covenants in all of the New England colonies. Weir's comprehensive survey of seventeenth-century covenants leads to a more complex picture of early New England than what emerges from looking at only a few famous civil covenants like the Mayflower Compact. His work shows covenant theology being transformed into a covenantal vision for society but also reveals the stress and strains on church-state relationships that eventually led to more secularized colonial governments in eighteenth-century New England. He concludes that New England colonial society was much more "English" and much less "American" than has often been thought, and that the New England colonies substantially mirrored religious and social change in Old England.
