Book excerpt: Jerry Lee Kelley was born in Spokane and grew up in Seattle, Washington. After high school, he worked for a cannery in Alaska for a year before entering Reed College in 1940. He lived in Eastport for two years, then became the student manager of the student union. An economics major, he thought highly of Professor Blair Stewart, and remembers the honor code as being particularly important. He worked as a student on the grounds crew, digging post-holes and thinning brush. Later, he was an organizer for campus and Canyon Day work crews. While in Eastport, the Doyle Owl was acquired as a student house trophy. He later worked as a social worker, teacher, and a soccer referee.
