Book excerpt: From the late 16th to the end of the 18th centuries, when Brazil was a Portuguese colony, painting and sculpture was almost entirely religious in nature. Fired with zeal for the conversion of the indigenous peoples of Brazil, Jesuit, Franciscan and Benedictine missionaries exploited the sensory impact of painting, sculpture, music and drama to promote the faith there. The opulent, majestic and theatrical Catholicism that gradually took root appealed to the imagination and to the senses -- as did the Baroque art of Counter-Reformation Europe. This book has been published to mark the first exhibition in Britain of Brazilian Baroque Art. Edited and largely compiled by Dr Catherine Whistler, the book also contains an art-historical survey by Dr Cristina Avila, of The Federal University of Minas Gerais, and an essay on Patronage and Expressions of the Baroque by Professor A J R Russell-Wood of The Johns Hopkins University. The colour plates demonstrate the vitality and virtuosity of the individual sculptures, domestic altarpieces, and pieces of liturgical silver loaned to the exhibition from private collections and Museums in Brazil.

Discover all the intricacies of spiritual love, bhakti, in this devotional classic. This is a summary study of Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, the Vaishnava classic written by Rupa Goswami that analyzes the various stages of bhakti (devotion) as a methodical practice resulting in love of God. Rupa Goswami uses a metaphor comparing an ocean (sindhu) to a devotional relationship with God. The title of the book conveys that loving relationships are enjoyable like sweet nectar and deep like an ocean. However, devotion is truly only meant for the supreme beloved, Krishna. Srila Prabhupada has written this summary study to show the essential understanding of the practices and ideals of Krishna consciousness, and to introduce the Western world to the beauty of devotional concepts. The spiritually thirsty can develop their relationship with Krishna by drinking from the unlimited reservoir of The Nectar of Devotion. Drink deeply.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic theology is in need of a new genre. In "Transgressive Devotion" Natalie Wigg-Stevenson articulates a theological vision of that genre as performance art. She argues that theology done as performance art stops trying to describe who God is, and starts trying to make God appear. Recognising that the act of studying theology or practicing ministry is always a performance, where the boundaries between what we see, feel, experience and learn are not just blurred but potentially invisible, Wigg-Stevenson brings together ethnographic theological fieldwork, historical and contemporary Christian theological traditions, and performance artworks themselves. A daring vision of theology which will energise anybody feeling ‘boxed in’ by the discipline, Transgressive Devotion blurs borders between orthodoxy, heterodoxy and heresy to reveal how the very act of doing theology makes God and humanity vulnerable to each other. This is theology which is a liturgy of Divine incantation. In other words: this is theology which is also prayer.

Book excerpt: There is scant research on the art produced under the Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, with the exception of a couple of general books focused primarily on major Oratorian art pieces. Therefore, this book of essays aims to discuss the art and culture produced by or associated with the Oratorians by providing a broad overview focused especially on rarely investigated issues. The authors focus on this very important artistic production, commonly forgotten when compared with other religious productions of art, by covering geographical areas spanning from Sri Lanka to Mexico, including Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, India and Brazil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the emerging Protestantism of the sixteenth century produced a Reformation in conscious opposition to formal philosophy. Nevertheless, sectors of the Reformation produced a spiritualizing form of Platonism in the drive for correct devotion. Out of an understandable fear of idolatry or displacement of the uniquely redemptive place of Christ, Christian piety moved away from the senses and the material world--freshly uncovered in the Reformation. This volume argues, however, that in the quest for restoring "true religion," sectors of the Protestant tradition impugned too severely the material components of prior Christian devotion. Larry Harwood argues that a similar spiritualizing tendency can be found in other Christian traditions, but that its applicability to the particulars of the Christian religion is nevertheless questionable. Moreover, in that quest of a spiritualizing Protestant "true religion," the Christian God could shade toward the conceptual god of the philosophers, with devotees construed as rationalist philosophers. Part of the paradoxical result was to propel the Protestant devotee toward a denuded worship for material worshipers of the Christian God who became flesh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on cemetery burials in late-eighteenth-century Mexico, Alone Before God provides a window onto the contested origins of modernity in Mexico. By investigating the religious and political debates surrounding the initiative to transfer the burials of prominent citizens from urban to suburban cemeteries, Pamela Voekel challenges the characterization of Catholicism in Mexico as an intractable and monolithic institution that had to be forcibly dragged into the modern world. Drawing on the archival research of wills, public documents, and other texts from late-colonial and early-republican Mexico, Voekel describes the marked scaling-down of the pomp and display that had characterized baroque Catholic burials and the various devices through which citizens sought to safeguard their souls in the afterlife. In lieu of these baroque practices, the new enlightened Catholics, claims Voekel, expressed a spiritually and hygienically motivated preference for extremely simple burial ceremonies, for burial outside the confines of the church building, and for leaving their earthly goods to charity. Claiming that these changes mirrored a larger shift from an external, corporate Catholicism to a more interior piety, she demonstrates how this new form of Catholicism helped to initiate a cultural and epistemic shift that placed the individual at the center of knowledge. Breaking with the traditional historiography to argue that Mexican liberalism had deeply religious roots, Alone Before God will be of interest to specialists in Latin American history, modernity, and religion.

Book excerpt: “One who sings and chants these supremely confidential teachings to My devotees will attain supreme devotion for Me and will attain Me. There is no doubt in this matter.” —Sri Krishna, Bhagavad-gita 18.68 If sharing the confidential meaning of the yoga of devotional love, bhakti-yoga, is the standard for spiritual advancement, then this is the definitive edition of the Bhagavad-gita. It is the first English translation that includes summaries of the commentaries of four of the most prominent expounders of the tradition of bhakti-yoga: Srimad Bhaktivinoda ?hakura, Srimad Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura, Srila Bhakti Pramode Puri Gosvami, and Sri Kanailal Pancatirtha—alongside the highly acclaimed translation of the text itself by Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Dev Gosvami. Taken together, no other edition of this sacred text has so comprehensively conveyed the timeless spiritual wisdom of the Bhagavad-gita.
