Book excerpt: The reports investigates the propagation of light in the visible region through a crystalline medium. In Part I, the objective is to determine if the anisotropic arrangement of ordinary (isotropic) dipoles at the nodal points of an orthorhombic lattice would account for the existence of double refraction. Some features of the traditional 'theory of dispersion' are disclosed and clarified. In part II, a crystalline medium is considered as filling a half- space and having a plane boundary at z=0. A plane optical wave is incident on this medium. Because of the linearity of the equations it has to be superimposed on the field originating in the crystal. It is shown that this incident optical wave is actually prevented from entering the crystal because of the modification produced in the field of the crystal by the introduction of a boundary. Material Added 1970. The conclusion that the incident optical field cannot penetrate the crystal boundary, together with a similar conclusion in a paper by Oseen, is the basis of the Ewald-Oseen Extinction Theorem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the invention of the first laser 30 years ago, the frequency conversion of laser radiation in nonlinear optical crystals has become an important technique widely used in quantum electronics and laser physics for solving various scientific and engineering problems. The fundamental physics of three-wave light interactions in nonlinear optical crystals is now well understood. This has enabled the production of various harmonic generators, sum-and difference frequency generators, and optical parametric oscillators based on nonlinear optical crystals that are now commercially available. At the same time, scientists continue an active search for novel, highly efficient nonlinear optical materials. Therefore, in our opinion, there is a great need for a handbook of nonlinear optical crystals, intended for specialists and practitioners with an engineering background. This book contains a complete description of the properties and applications of all nonliner optical crystals of practical importance reported in the literature up to the beginning of 1990. In addition, it contains the most important equations for calculating the main parameters (such as phase-matching direction, effective nonlinearity, and conversion efficiency) of nonlinear frequency converters.

Book excerpt: Some of the simpler measurements of optical mineralogy are so precise and powerful that they give satisfaction to beginning students. Not long after mastering the strike and dip of rock surfaces with the Brunton compass, many geology students are able to determine precisely the identity of quartz, or the anorthite content of plagioclase, or the magne sium ratio of pyroxene with the polarizing or petrographic microscope, by means of measuring refractive index to better than one part in a thousand. Very little training and almost no theory are needed to achieve these skills. But there inevitably comes a time when theory is needed, either to get on with the art, or simply to reconstruct from first principles what is going on, when rote memory fails. In this book we hope to provide both the rote methods and the theoretical background for practitioners at all levels of experience. We draw from several careers-ours, our colleagues', and our students' -in teaching the subject at various levels of sophistication. Our book is intended to serve the needs of industrial and forensic scientists as well as petrogra phers who deal with rocks. Much of our treatment is based on new research, both in matters of presentation and in the optical determination of minerals and other materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deals not only with the properties of the radiation modes inside the crystals but also with their peculiar optical response to external fields. A general theory of linear and nonlinear optical response is presented in a clear and detailed fashion using the Green’s function method. Important recent developments such as the enhancement of stimulated emission, second harmonic generation, quadrature-phase squeezing, and low-threshold lasing are likewise treated in detail and made understandable. Numerical methods are also emphasised. This book provides both introductory knowledge for graduate and undergraduate students and important ideas for researchers.
