In the course of the research, a mathematical model of the lightly damped experimental structure was created based on experimental data. This model was used in the design of two classes of controllers. The first class is pure rate feedback of the structure's measured states such that global stability is insured. The second type of controller investigated was an optimal controller (LQG) that was created using the truncated mathematical model. The rate feedback controller showed significant improvements in the damping of the structures flexible modes. The optimal controller proved to be stable only for negligible gains and did not improve structural damping significantly.

Book excerpt: Time delays in feedback control systems have intrigued researchers especially over the past five decades. Some recent studies have discovered that deliberate introduction of delays within certain control laws yields favorable results. This work follows the same philosophy and stems from a pedigree of research where delays are viewed as a tool, and their unique features are exploited. Delayed Resonators use the destabilizing effect of delays to induce resonance in an active vibration absorber, providing complete vibration suppression against time varying tonal disturbances. Inspired by these developments, this work embarks on another exploration on systems that harvest energy from mechanical vibrations. In this research, an analytical framework is developed on generic active mechanical vibration absorbers with delayed feedback control. The interplay between the generated and consumed energy is investigated from a physics viewpoint. It is shown that energy harvesting capacity can be significantly enhanced by introducing a properly designed time-delayed feedback. A critical feature in this work is the use of piezoelectric materials. Considerable research has been devoted to the use of piezoelectric components for both vibration control and energy harvesting. Piezoelectricity provides a bi-directional coupling between mechanical strain and electrical fields. This allows the use of resistive-inductive electrical circuits, which are reconfigured to serve as resonators for mechanical structures. In this work, time-delayed control laws are devised for such systems, primarily to serve two purposes: (a) effective vibration suppression and (b) increased energy harvesting. The essence of the scientific contribution lies at the point that the electrical circuit is actively sensitized to replace a conventional proof-mass absorber (or harvester). This idea could evolve into a design mechanism which has many advantages, such as compactness, reduced weight, and deployment practicality. An experimental setup, consisting of a cantilever beam with piezoelectric patches connected to a shunt circuit, is constructed to demonstrate the core concepts in this effort. Delayed proportional control is applied within the electrical circuit to test the analytical findings. As expected, many practical issues are encountered and addressed during this effort. Favorable experimental results on vibration control and energy harvesting are presented and discussed in detail.

This matter becomes more crucial for lightweight systems, like those made of magnesium. One of the most commonly practiced methods in vibration control is to apply constrained layer damping (CLD) patches to the surface of a structure. In order to consider the weight efficiency of the structure, the best shape and locations of the patches should be determined to achieve the optimum vibration suppression with the lowest amount of damping patch. In most research work done so far, the shape of patches are assumed to be known and only their optimum locations are found. However, the shape of the patches plays an important role in vibration suppression that should be included in the overall optimization procedure. In this research, a novel topology optimization approach is proposed. This approach is capable of finding the optimum shape and locations of the patches simultaneously for a given surface area. In other words, the damping optimization will be formulated in the context of the level set technique, which is a numerical method used to track shapes and locations concurrently.

Book excerpt: The overall aim of this dissertation is to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the design optimization for passive and semi-active vibration suppression of beam-type structures utilizing the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and Semi-Active Mass Damper (SAMD) to prevent discomfort, damage or outright structural failure through dissipating the vibratory energy effectively. The finite element model for general curved beams with variable curvatures under different assumptions (including/excluding the effects of the axial extensibility, shear deformation and rotary inertia) are developed and then utilized to solve the governing differential equations of motion for beam-type structures with the attached TMD system. The developed equations of motion in finite element form are then solved through the random vibration state-space analysis method to effectively find the variance of response under stationary random loading. A hybrid optimization methodology, which combines the global optimization method based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the powerful local optimization method based on Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), is developed and then utilized to find the optimal design parameters (damping, stiffness and position) of the attached single and multiple TMD systems. Based on the extensive numerical investigation, a design framework for vibration suppression of beam-type structures using TMD technology is then presented. An in-house experimental set-up is designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed optimal design approach for vibration suppression of beam-type structures using TMD technology. Next, the Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid damper is utilized to design the SAMD system. A new hysteresis model based on the LuGre friction model is developed to analyze the dynamic behavior of large-scale MR-damper (MR-9000 type) accurately and efficiently. The gradient based optimization technique and least square estimation method have been utilized to identify the characteristic parameters of MR-damper. Moreover, based on the developed hysteresis model, an effective inverse MR-damper model has also been proposed, which can be readily used in the design of semi-active vibration suppression devices. The controller for SAMD system using MR-damper is designed based on the proposed inverse MR-damper model and H2 /LQG controller design methodology. The developed SAMD system along with the MR-damper model is then implemented to beam-type structures to suppress the vibration. It has been shown that the designed SAMD system using MR-damper can effectively suppress the vibration in a robust and fail-safe manner.
