Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prestressed concrete decks are commonly used for bridges with spans between 25m and 450m and provide economic, durable and aesthetic solutions in most situations where bridges are needed. Concrete remains the most common material for bridge construction around the world, and prestressed concrete is frequently the material of choice. Extensively illustrated throughout, this invaluable book brings together all aspects of designing prestressed concrete bridge decks into one comprehensive volume. The book clearly explains the principles behind both the design and construction of prestressed concrete bridges, illustrating the interaction between the two. It covers all the different types of deck arrangement and the construction techniques used, ranging from in-situ slabs and precast beams; segmental construction and launched bridges; and cable-stayed structures. Included throughout the book are many examples of the different types of prestressed concrete decks used, with the design aspects of each discussed along with the general analysis and design process. Detailed descriptions of the prestressing components and systems used are also included. Prestressed Concrete Bridges is an essential reference book for both the experienced engineer and graduate who want to learn more about the subject.

Book excerpt: The design of bridges is a unique art as they are expected to carry moving loads compared to the statically loaded structures. Mere training in code procedures and special design skills are inadequate for successful professional practice. Thorough understanding of basic concepts and response characteristics of various structural elements is necessary for professional bridge designers. This book encompasses the manual and computer aided design of prestressed concrete bridges. Besides explaining the detailed design procedures for designing various components of prestressed concrete girder bridge; this book also focuses on the basic concepts and definitions of various bridge components. The theory of prestressing with its merits and demerits is also discussed in detail. The manual design procedure of different members of prestressed concrete bridges is explained in a comprehensive and step-by-step manner. Illustrations are used to explain the computer aided design method. The design and analysis results are compared in the end and discussions are made in order to explain the reasons for possible discrepancies.

Book excerpt: Most engineers may agree that an optimum design of a particular structure is a proposal that minimizes costs without compromising resistance, serviceability and aesthetics. Additionally to these conditions, the theory and application of the method that produces such an efficient design must be easy and fast to apply at the structural engineering offices. A considerable amount of studies have been conducted for the past four decades. Most researchers have used constraints and tried to minimize the cost of the structure by reducing the weight of it [8]. Although this approach may be true for steel structures, it is not accurate for composite structures such as reinforced and prestressed concrete. Maximizing the amount of reinforcing steel to minimize the weight of the overall structure can produce an increase of the cost if the price of steel is too high compared to concrete [8]. A better approach is to reduce the total cost of the structure instead of weight. However, some structures such as Prestressed Concrete AASHTO Girders have been standardized with the purpose of simplifying production, design and construction. Optimizing a bridge girder requires good judgment at an early stage of the design and some studies have provided guides for preliminary design that will generate a final economical solution [17] [18]. Therefore, no calculations or optimization procedure is required to select the appropriate Standard AASHTO Girder. This simplifies the optimization problem of a bridge girder to reducing the amount of prestressing and mild steel only. This study will address the problem of optimizing the prestressing force of a PC AASHTO girder by using linear programming and feasibility domain of working stresses. A computer program will be presented to apply the optimization technique effectively.
