Book Synopsis Design of a Hypersonic Airbreathing Cruise Missile by : Eduard Graells Pina
Download or read book Design of a Hypersonic Airbreathing Cruise Missile written by Eduard Graells Pina and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project, a hypersonic airbreathing cruise missile is designed through an optimization process. The main use of this futuristic weapon technology is to be employed against enemy ships while being launched from an Mk-41 VLS launcher, the most widespread VLS in the world. In this optimization process and for this type of missile, Genetic Algorithms and Monte Carlo simulations are used to find an optimal solution for the rocket booster engine, the scramjet engine, aerodynamics and warhead sizing. With this data, trajectory, stability and manoeuvrability is studied to determine the performance of the missile. Other aspects concerning the missile materials of the airframe and dome are discussed on a qualitative way and no structural analysis is studied within this project. It should be noted that hypersonic weapons are mature technologies, and the only information about them are research papers regarding their aerodynamics and propulsion systems. Then, the only built hypersonic vehicles are experimental, meaning that the baseline data to start design process scarce. This brings a great challenge to this project, where creativity and the use of analytical expressions for rapid missile synthesis and conceptual design is a must. On the other side, due to the complex behaviour of hypersonic flows, this adds difficulties to our research since most of the methods employed are numerical, which can be calculated easily on a CFD in the final stages of the design, but they are not fast enough to be implemented on the initial stages of design. The final results prove that the methods employed for initial sizing are accurate enough to model a CAD design which can be used as a baseline for future research in this technology. To conclude with, the final results obtained with the algorithms helps us to understand the effects on design, especially when flying at high Mach numbers where the classical configuration of airframe, wings and tail must be radically redesigned to more aerodynamic efficient bodies such as Waveriders. Regarding to the optimization process, objective functions were changed manually to find better results at each iteration of the optimization process but better techniques such as local search methods used in artificial intelligence could be employed.
Book Synopsis Thermodynamic Cycle Analysis of Magnetohydrodynamic-bypass Hypersonic Airbreathing Engines by : R. J. Litchford
Download or read book Thermodynamic Cycle Analysis of Magnetohydrodynamic-bypass Hypersonic Airbreathing Engines written by R. J. Litchford and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prospects for realizing a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) bypass hypersonic airbreathing engine are examined from the standpoint of fundamental thermodynamic feasibility. The MHD-bypass engine, first proposed as part of the Russian AJAX vehicle concept, is based on the idea of redistributing energy between various stages of the propulsion system flow train. The system uses an MHD generator to extract a portion of the aerodynamic heating energy from the inlet and an MHD accelerator to reintroduce this power as kinetic energy in the exhaust stream. In this way, the combustor entrance Mach number can be limited to a specified value even as the flight Mach number increases. Thus, the fuel and air can be efficiently mixed and burned within a practical combustor length, and the flight Mach number operating envelope can be extended. In this paper, we quantitatively assess the performance potential and scientific feasibility of MHD-bypass engines using a simplified thermodynamic analysis. This cycle analysis, based on a thermally and calorically perfect gas, incoporates a coupled MHD generator-accelerator system and accounts for aerodynamic losses and thermodynamic process efficiencies in the various engine components. It is found that the flight Mach number range can be significantly extended; however, overall performance is hampered by non-isentropic losses in the MHD devices.

Download or read book Aerodynamic Performance Analysis of the Hypersonic Airbreathing Vehicle JAPHAR written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, DLR and ONERA joined in a common project called JAPHAR (Joint Airbreathing Propulsion for Hypersonic Application Research). The main objective of this project is to develop and test at ground a dual mode ramjet engine (DMR) combining both subsonic and supersonic combustion regimes. The other objective is to define a methodology to establish the thrust-minus-drag balance of the DMR on an experimental vehicle to be flown between Mach number 4 and 8. This paper presents an ongoing effort for the design of an integrated propulsive system for JAPHAR flight test vehicle. Forebody, inlet and nozzle aerodynamic studies are conducted in close connection with the system studies and require CFD analysis as well as wind tunnel experiments. A forebody parametric study based on turbulent Navier-Stokes calculations was conducted at ONERA. The main results are given in the paper, demonstrating the advantage of DLR waverider forebody. In addition, this paper gives an overview of the inlet studies conducted so far at ONERA. An internal compression inlet was designed and tested in S3MA wind tunnel, between Mach 3 and 5.5. Navier-Stokes calculations are in progress to calibrate numerical codes and to provide combustion people with realistic entry flow field conditions. Lastly, a preliminary design of a SERN nozzle (Single Expansion Ramp Nozzle) relying on inviscid calculations is presented.

Book excerpt: This White Paper examines the current state of Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion at the NASA Langley Research Center and the factors influencing this area of work and its personnel. Using this knowledge, the paper explores beyond the present day and suggests future directions and strategies for the field. Broad views are first taken regarding potential missions and applications of hypersonic propulsion. Then, candidate propulsion systems that may be applicable to these missions are suggested and discussed. Design tools and experimental techniques for developing these propulsion systems are then described, and approaches for applying them in the design process are considered. In each case, current strategies are reviewed and future approaches that may improve the techniques are considered. Finally, the paper concentrates on the needs to be addressed in each of these areas to take advantage of the opportunities that lay ahead for both the NASA Langley Research Center and the Aerodynamic Aerothermodynamic, and Aeroacoustics Competency. Recommendations are then provided so that the goals set forth in the paper may be achieved.Drummond, J. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described here is the development of a flexible simulation model for scramjet hypersonic propulsion systems. The primary goal is determination of sensitivity of the thrust vector and other system parameters to angle of attack changes of the vehicle. Such information is crucial in design and analysis of control system performance for hypersonic vehicles. The code is also intended to be a key element in carrying out dynamic interaction studies involving the influence of vehicle vibrations on propulsion system/control system coupling and flight stability. Simple models are employed to represent the various processes comprising the propulsion system. A method of characteristics (MOC) approach is used to solve the forebody and external nozzle flow fields. This results in a very fast computational algorithm capable of carrying out the vast number of simulation computations needed in guidance, stability, and control studies. The three-dimensional fore- and aft body (nozzle) geometry is characterized by the centerline profiles as represented by a series of coordinate points and body cross-section curvature. The engine module geometry is represented by an adjustable vertical grid to accommodate variations of the field parameters throughout the inlet and combustor. The scramjet inlet is modeled as a two-dimensional supersonic flow containing adjustable sidewall wedges and multiple fuel injection struts. The inlet geometry including the sidewall wedge angles, the number of injection struts, their sweepback relative to the vehicle reference line, and strut cross-section are user selectable. Combustion is currently represented by a Rayleigh line calculation including corrections for variable gas properties; improved models are being developed for this important element of the propulsion flow field. The program generates (1) variation of thrust magnitude and direction with angle of attack, (2) pitching moment and line of action of the thrust vector, (3) pressure and temperature d...
