Particularly, with the advent of the future 5G technology, it is expected that a tremendous mobile and data traffic will be crossing Internet network. In this regard, Cloud service providers are urged to rethink their data center architectures in order to cope with this unprecedented traffic explosion. Unfortunately, the conventional wired infrastructures struggle to resist to such a traffic growth and become prone to serious congestion problems. Therefore, new innovative techniques are required. In this thesis, we investigate a recent promising approach that augments the wired Data Center Network (DCN) with wireless communications. Indeed, motivated by the feasibility of the new emerging 60 GHz technology, offering an impressive data rate (≈ 7 Gbps), we envision, a Hybrid (wireless/wired) DCN (HDCN) architecture. Our HDCN is based on i) Cisco's Massively Scalable Data Center (MSDC) model and ii) IEEE 802.11ad standard. Servers in the HDCN are regrouped into racks, where each rack is equipped with a: i) Ethernet top-of-rack (ToR) switch and ii) set of wireless antennas. Our research aims to optimize the routing and the allocation of wireless resources for inter-rack communications in HDCN while enhancing network performance and minimizing congestion. The problem of routing and resource allocation in HDCN is NP-hard. To deal with this difficulty, we will tackle the problem into three stages. In the first stage, we consider only one-hop inter-rack communications in HDCN, where all communicating racks are in the same transmission range. We will propound a new wireless channel allocation approach in HDCN to hardness both wireless and wired interfaces for incoming flows while enhancing network throughput. In the second stage, we deal with the multi-hop communications in HDCN where communicating racks can not communicate in one single-hop wireless path. We propose a new approach to jointly route and allocate channels for each single communication flow, in an online way. Finally, in the third stage, we address the batched arrival of inter-rack communications to the HDCN so as to further optimize the usage of wireless and wired resources. For that end, we propose: i) a heuristic-based and ii) an approximate, solutions, to solve the joint batch routing and channel assignment. Based on extensive simulations conducted in QualNet simulator while considering the full protocol stack, the obtained results for both real workload and uniform traces, show that our proposals outperform the prominent related strategies.

Quantitative performance measures that capture the quality of service requirements in these systems depending on the supported applications are discussed, including throughput maximization, energy consumption minimization, rate utility function maximization as well as general performance functionals. Cross-layer control algorithms with optimal or suboptimal performance with respect to the above measures are presented and analyzed. A detailed exposition of the related analysis and design techniques is provided.

To support the growing demands on bandwidth, Data Centers consume an increasing amount of power. A significant portion of that power is consumed by information technology (IT) equipment, including servers and networking components. Additionally, the complex cabling in traditional data centers poses design and maintenance challenges and increases the energy cost of the cooling infrastructure by obstructing the flow of chilled air. Hence, to reduce the power consumption of the data centers, we proposed a wireless server-to-server data center network architecture using millimeter-wave links to eliminate the need for power-hungry switching fabric of traditional fat-tree-based data center networks. The server-to-server wireless data center network (S2S-WiDCN) architecture requires Line-of-Sight (LoS) between servers to establish direct communication links. However, in the presence of interference from internal or external sources, or an obstruction, such as an IT technician, the LoS may be blocked. To address this issue, we also propose a novel obstruction-aware adaptive routing algorithm for S2S-WiDCN. S2S-WiDCN can reduce the power consumption of the data center network portion while not affecting the power consumption of the servers in the data center, which contributes significantly towards the total power consumption of the data center. Moreover, servers in data centers are almost always underutilized due to over-provisioning, which contributes heavily toward the high-power consumption of the data centers. To address the high power consumption of the servers, we proposed a network-aware bandwidth-constrained server consolidation algorithm called Network-Aware Server Consolidation (NASCon) for wireless data centers that can reduce the power consumption up to 37% while improving the network performance. However, due to the arrival of new tasks and the completion of existing tasks, the consolidated utilization profile of servers change, which may have an adverse effect on overall power consumption over time. To overcome this, NASCon algorithm needs to be executed periodically. We have proposed a mathematical model to estimate the optimal inter-consolidation time, which can be used by the data center resource management unit for scheduling NASCon consolidation operation in real-time and leverage the benefits of server consolidation. However, in any data center environment ensuring security is one of the highest design priorities. Hence, for S2S-WiDCN to become a practical and viable solution for data center network design, the security of the network has to be ensured. S2S-WiDCN data center can be vulnerable to a variety of different attacks as it uses wireless links over an unguided channel for communication. As being a wireless system, the network has to be secured against common threats associated with any wireless networks such as eavesdropping attack, denial of services attack, and jamming attack. In parallel, other security threats such as the attack on the control plane, side-channel attack through traffic analysis are also possible. We have done an extensive study to elaborate the scope of these attacks as well as explore probable solutions against these issues. We also proposed viable solutions for the attack against eavesdropping, denial of services, jamming, and control-plane attack. To address the traffic analysis attack, we proposed a simulated annealing-based random routing mechanism which can be adopted instead of default routing in the wireless data center."--Abstract.

One of the most important topics related to networking research is using optimization tools to improve the utilization of network resources. In this dissertation, we concentrate on optimization for resource-constrained wireless networks, and study two fundamental resource-allocation problems: 1) distributed routing optimization and 2) anypath routing optimization. The study on the distributed routing optimization problem is composed of two main thrusts, targeted at understanding distributed routing and resource optimization for multihop wireless networks. The first thrust is dedicated to understanding the impact of full-duplex transmission on wireless network resource optimization. We propose two provably good distributed algorithms to optimize the resources in a full-duplex wireless network. We prove their optimality and also provide network status analysis using dual space information. The second thrust is dedicated to understanding the influence of network entity load constraints on network resource allocation and routing computation. We propose a provably good distributed algorithm to allocate wireless resources. In addition, we propose a new subgradient optimization framework, which can provide findgrained convergence, optimality, and dual space information at each iteration. This framework can provide a useful theoretical foundation for many networking optimization problems. The study on the anypath routing optimization problem is composed of two main thrusts. The first thrust is dedicated to understanding the computational complexity of multi-constrained anypath routing and designing approximate solutions. We prove that this problem is NP-hard when the number of constraints is larger than one. We present two polynomial time K-approximation algorithms. One is a centralized algorithm while the other one is a distributed algorithm. For the second thrust, we study directional anypath routing and present a cross-layer design of MAC and routing. For the MAC layer, we present a directional anycast MAC. For the routing layer, we propose two polynomial time routing algorithms to compute directional anypaths based on two antenna models, and prove their ptimality based on the packet delivery ratio metric.

Book excerpt: Abstract: As wireless networks continue streaking through more aspects of our lives, it is seriously constrained by limited network resources, in terms of time, frequency and power. In order to enhance performance for wireless networks, it is of great importance to allocate resources smartly based on the current network scenarios. The focus of this dissertation is to investigate radio resource management algorithms to optimize performance for different types of wireless networks. Firstly, we investigate a joint optimization problem on relay node placement and route assignment for wireless sensor networks. A heuristic binary integer programming algorithm is proposed to maximize the total number of information packets received at the base station during the network lifetime. We then present an optimization algorithm based on binary integer programming for relay node assignment with the current node locations. Subsequently, a heuristic algorithm is applied to move the relay nodes to the locations iteratively to better serve their associated edge nodes. Secondly, as traditional goal of maximizing the total throughput can result in unbalanced use of network resources, we study a joint problem of power control and channel assignment within a wireless mesh network such that the minimal capacity of all links is maximized. This is essentially a fairness problem. We develop an upper bound for the objective by relaxing the integer variables and linearization. Subsequently, we put forward a heuristic approach to approximate the optimal solution, which tries to increase the minimal capacity of all links via setting tighter constraint and solving a binary integer programming problem. Simulation results show that solutions obtained by this algorithm are very close to the upper bounds obtained via relaxation, thus suggesting that the solution produced by the algorithm is near-optimal. Thirdly, we study the topology control of disaster area wireless networks to facilitate mobile nodes communications by deploying a minimum number of relay nodes dynamically. We first put forward a novel mobility model for mobile nodes that describes the movement of first responders within a large disaster area. Secondly, we formulate the square disk cover problem and propose three algorithms to solve it, including the two-vertex square covering algorithm, the circle covering algorithm and the binary integer programming algorithm. Fourthly, we explore the joint problem of power control and channel assignment to maximize cognitive radio network throughput. It is assumed that an overlaid cognitive radio network (CRN) co-exists with a primary network. We model the opportunistic spectrum access for cognitive radio network and formulate the cross-layer optimization problem under the interference constraints imposed by the existing primary network. A distributed greedy algorithm is proposed to seek for larger network throughput. Cross-layer optimization for CRN is often implemented in centralized manner to avoid co-channel interference. The distributed algorithm coordinates the channel assignment with local channel usage information. Thus the computation complexity is greatly reduced. Finally, we study the network throughput optimization problem for a multi-hop wireless network by considering interference alignment at physical layer. We first transform the problem of dividing a set of links into multiple maximal concurrent link sets to the problem of finding the maximal cliques of a graph. Then each concurrent link set is further divided into one or several interference channel networks, on which interference alignment is implemented to guarantee simultaneous transmission. The network throughput optimization problem is then formulated as a non-convex nonlinear programming problem, which is NP-hard generally. Thus we resort to developing a branch-and-bound framework, which guarantees an achievable performance bound.

Book excerpt: The use of relay nodes to improve the performance of broadband wireless access (BWA) networks has been the subject of intense research activities in recent years. Relay enhanced BWA networks are anticipated to support multimedia traffic (i.e., voice, video, and data traffic). In order to guarantee service to network users, efficient resource distribution is imperative. Wireless multihop networks are characterized by two inherent dynamic characteristics: 1) the existence of wireless interference and 2) mobility of user nodes. Both mobility and interference greatly influence the ability of users to obtain the necessary resources for service. In this dissertation we conduct a comprehensive research study on the topic of resource allocation in the presence of interference and mobility. Specifically, this dissertation investigates the impact interference and mobility have on various aspects of resource allocation, ranging from fairness to spectrum utilization. We study four important resource allocation algorithms for relay enhanced BWA networks. The problems and our research achievements are briefly outlined as follows. First, we propose an interference aware rate adaptive subcarrier and power allocation algorithm using maximum multicommodity flow optimization. We consider the impact of the wireless interference constraints using Signal to Interference Noise Ratio (SINR). We exploit spatial reuse to allocate subcarriers in the network and show that an intelligent reuse of resources can improve throughput while mitigating the impact of interference. We provide a sub-optimal heuristic to solve the rate adaptive resource allocation problem. We demonstrate that aggressive spatial reuse and fine tuned-interference modeling garner advantages in terms of throughput, end-to-end delay and power distribution. Second, we investigate the benefits of decoupled optimization of interference aware routing and scheduling using SINR and spatial reuse to improve the overall achievable throughput. We model the routing optimization problem as a linear program using maximum concurrent flows. We develop an optimization formulation to schedule the link traffic such that interference is mitigated and time slots are reused appropriately based on spatial TDMA (STDMA). The scheduling problem is shown to be NP-hard and is solved using the column generation technique. We compare our formulations to conventional counterparts in the literature and show that our approach guarantees higher throughput by mitigating the effect of interference effectively. Third, we investigate the problem of multipath flow routing and fair bandwidth allocation under interference constraints for multihop wireless networks. We first develop a novel isotonic routing metric, RI3M, considering the influence of interflow and intraflow interference. Second, in order to ensure QoS, an interference-aware max-min fair bandwidth allocation algorithm, LMX:M3F, is proposed where the lexicographically largest bandwidth allocation vector is found among all optimal allocation vectors while considering constraints of interference on the flows. We compare with various interference based routing metrics and interference aware bandwidth allocation algorithms established in the literature to show that RI3M and LMX:M3F succeed in improving network performance in terms of delay, packet loss ratio and bandwidth usage. Lastly, we develop a user mobility prediction model using the Hidden Markov Model(HMM) in which prediction control is transferred to the various fixed relay nodes in the network. Given the HMM prediction model, we develop a routing protocol which uses the location information of the mobile user to determine the interference level on links in its surrounding neighborhood. We use SINR as the routing metric to calculate the interference on a specific link (link cost). We minimize the total cost of routing as a cost function of SINR while guaranteeing that the load on each link does not exceed its capacity. The routing protocol is formulated and solved as a minimum cost flow optimization problem. We compare our SINR based routing algorithm with conventional counterparts in the literature and show that our algorithm reinforces routing paths with high link quality and low latency, therefore improving overall system throughput. The research solutions obtained in this dissertation improve the service reliability and QoS assurance of emerging BWA networks.
