The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has had some success in reducing the requirement from 565 lb of portland cement per cu yd of concrete mix to 480 lb per cu yd on some selected projects. Can total cementitious content for concrete pavements be reduced to 565 lb (452 lb cement and 113 lb fly ash) and still be durable? In this report, an engineering analysis is documented representing Phase I of a study to evaluate potential durability issues stemming from the use of lowered cement contents in PCCP mixes specified by CDOT.

Book excerpt: It has been estimated that over 60 asphalt mix designs are being specified by the various local governments and design consultants in the Denver metropolitan area. As material batches are ordered for delivery to these various agencies, the producers are required to constantly change their mixing formulations and plant operations. This constantly changing process results in inefficiencies in production time and cost to the buyer, as well as variability in the process. The problem is intensified when towns and communities order small amounts of material for a local street project. In March, 1994 a Government Forum was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association. At this forum, a decision was made to organize a Task Force to address this problem and provide recommendations for asphalt paving materials in the Denver Metropolitan area. This report presents the recommendations of that Task Force. The recommendations include gradation, asphalt cement type, additives, RAP, voids, and laboratory design properties. Four standard mixes were identified.

Book excerpt: The ultimate goals of this study included investigation of the optimal ranges for paste content, amount of cementations materials and aggregate gradation for concrete paving mixtures. In general, the optimum concrete mixtures developed in this study contained low paste content (below 23%), and were characterized by low scaling and sorptivity. In addition, it was also possible to achieve high cement replacement levels for these mixtures. Finally, for optimized fly ash mixtures, the selection of well graded aggregate gradation with high packing density increased the most desired paste content for those mixtures, thus indicating that combined aggregate gradation has strong influence on concrete performance. Lastly, concrete mixtures developed with optimum ranges of variables studied in this research contained low cement content. The overall scope of the research was divided into three distinctive phases, each of which is described briefly below: PHASE I: This phase consisted of statistical optimization of the proportions of concrete binder. The Central Composite Design methodology (CCD) was used to design the experiment for the optimization of binder in three types of concrete mixtures: a) cement + fly ash, b) cement + GGBFS, and c) cement + fly ash + GGBFS. The variables studied in each of these systems included: paste content (from 21 to 25 % by mixture volume) and total content of supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in the mixture. This was expressed as weight percent of total binder, and varied depending on the binder system used. PHASE II: The main goal of this phase was to investigate the effect of different aggregate gradations on the fresh and hardened properties of optimized concrete mixtures developed in PHASE I, as well as to identify the most desired aggregate gradations for paving mixtures. Different aggregate gradations were prepared by blending of 2, 3 or 4 different sizes of aggregates based on concept of Shilstone's Coarseness Factor Chart. PHASE III: The concept of air-free paste-aggregate void saturation ratio (k") introduced in PHASE II seemed to fairly accurate link the properties of concrete mixtures with their paste content. Thus, it was decided to further investigate this concept in connection with aggregate packing density ( ). In addition, it was believed that defining optimum values of "k" will allow for revising the paste content ranges developed in PHASE I for different systems, and thus define more general optimum paste ranges for paving mixtures.

A team of national asphalt experts conducted this forensic evaluation. The forensic team concluded that the cracking on the project was surface initiated cracking and was caused by a number of contributing factors. One of the contributing factors to the early distress that was identified by the experts were the pockets of segregation that were observed at the bottom of the surface lift but were not apparent on the surface. The object of this study was to determine the extent of "top-down cracking" in Colorado, what causes it, how can it be prevented, if it occurs how is the distress treated, and how quickly does the distress need to be treated.

Much research has been conducted to develop corrosion protection systems that can prolong the life span of reinforced concrete structures. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has several routine and experimental measures to prevent corrosion of the rebar including epoxy-coated rebar, calcium nitrite admixture, organic corrosion inhibitors, a thick cover of quality concrete, and a waterproofing membrane covered by an asphalt overlay. An extensive literature review was performed to collect information on various corrosion protection systems that have been used in the U.S. and around the world. Current CDOT practices in terms of corrosion protection measures were reviewed. A draft inspection plan for Colorado's bridge structures was proposed.

The request was made because, within a year of the 1997 overlay, longitudinal cracking appeared in the surface. Transverse cracks were attributed to reflective cracking. However, the longitudinal cracks appeared to be surface initiated. In October 2000, a forensic team reviewed the project and established a sampling and testing plan to take cores from the roadway. Based on data analysis of the cores, the higher than expected in-place air voids, the low effective asphalt, and segregation within the mat, all contributed to the early cracking.
