Book excerpt: Closed-loop traffic control systems can be operated by either Time-of-Day (TOD) mode or Traffic Responsive Plan Selection (TRPS) mode. When properly configured, the TRPS mode has the potential to provide an optimal operation due to its ability to accommodate abnormal traffic conditions such as incidents, special events, and holiday traffic. TRPS mode can also reduce the need for frequent redesign/updates to signal timing plans. To date, there have not been any formal guidelines for selection of robust and optimal TRPS system parameters and thresholds. Consequently, traffic engineers usually revert to the TOD mode of operation for its ease of setup. This report provides a new methodology for robust and optimal selection of TRPS parameters and thresholds. The report presents an innovative framework of TRPS system setup following a comprehensive approach that incorporates a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm and a supervised discriminant analysis. The developed guidelines are presented in simplified tables to facilitate their implementation. Guidelines were verified by using hardware-in-the-loop simulations. Compared to just the worst possible solutions encountered during the optimization, the final solution provided a concurrent savings of 53 percent in delay and 19 percent in stops.

Researches have shown that among others, traditional traffic control system is one of the main reasons for traffic congestion at traffic junctions. Most countries through out the world use pre-timed / fixed cycle time traffic control systems. But these traffic control systems do not give an optimal signal time setting as they do not take into account the time dependent heavy traffic conditions at the junctions. They merely use a predetermined sequence or order for both signal phase change and time setting. Some times this also leads to more congestion at the junctions. As an improvement of fixed time traffic control method, fuzzy logic traffic control model was developed which takes into account the current traffic conditions at the junctions and works based on fuzzy logic principle under imprecise and uncertain conditions. But as a real life situation,in addition to uncertainty and impreciseness there is also indeterminacy in traffic signal control constraints which fuzzy logic can not handle. The aim of this research is to develop a new traffic signal control model that can solve the limitations of fixed time signal control and fuzzy logic signal control using a flexible approach based on interval-valued neutrosophic soft set and its decision making technique, specially developed for this purpose.We have developed an algorithm for controlling both phase change and green time extension / termination as warranted by the traffic conditions prevailing at any time.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this report are to develop an analytical model to estimate fuel consumption and to investigate the effects of signal timing on fuel consumption. Several numerical experiments, including a variety of geometric configurations, traffic conditions, and signal timing are conducted to test the AFCM estimation capability and to investigate the effects of signal timing on fuel consumption. The results from these experiments indicate that total fuel consumption, with respect to signal cycle time, possesses a convex pattern. In order to analytically establish the relationship between fuel consumption and signal timing, a three-term form is reduced from the AFCM to represent major effects of vehicle characteristics, traffic behavior, and fuel consumption parameters on optimal cycle length. The first term represents vehicle ideal fuel consumption, the second term describes vehicle fuel consumption during acceleration after a stop, and the third term accounts for stochastic effects. Numerical analysis and comparisons show that the optimal cycle lengths from the expression are rather close to those from the AFCM.
